BIPreface
“The idea of writing this book came from discussions with a
number of colleagues at Lancaster University about discourse
analysis at a method in social research, in particular sociologists
aul Bogguley, Scott Lath and Celia Luryy Mick Dillon of the
Politics Department, and Susan Condor of the Psychology De-
partment. T have aiso benefited from the encouragement and
enthusiasm of collegues and students in Linguistics, especialy
Romy Clark, Roz Ivanic, Hilary Janks, Stef Slembrouk, and
Mary Talbot. Mary Talbor also provided the conversational
‘arrative sample in chapter 5. am grateful to Gunther Kress and
John Thompson for their very helpful comments on an earlier
draft. Last bu by no means leat, have had invaluable support
and wlerance during the writing process from Vonny, Simon and
Matthew.
