W
hat is
Celebrating
Seniors?
Each year the U.S.
Department on Aging
proclaims May as
Older Americans
Month. Unfortunately,
May will come and go
without much fanfare or
recognition for the older
adults who have made
our communities great
places to live. Extolling
the virtues of “seniors”
who have made significant
contributions to our quality
of life can sometimes seem
patronizing. However, as
the population ages and our
society becomes “grayer” it
is clear that we need to find
ways to celebrate our older
citizens and highlight the
significant contributions
that they make in our
communities.
Vibrant communities
are in need of both old
and young. We cannot and
should not expect that as we
age we will move from our
homes to “Senior Living
Communities”. We should
expect that as we age, we
can age in place. We can
stay in our own homes, live
independently and continue
to contribute in ways that
add to the richness of life for
everyone. We can continue
to shop, dine, entertain,
exercise and worship in
ways that keep us connected
to and involved with our
communities.
How did this all get
started?
With these thoughts in
mind, a small, committed
group of volunteers and
community representatives
from Oak Park, River Forest
and Forest Park organized

the Celebrating Seniors
Coalition. The Coalition
began by contacting the
Village and Township
governments in the three
communities to proclaim
May as “Older Americans
Month” and designate the
week of May 6th -13th of 2011
as “Celebrating Seniors
Week.”
With the support of
local government, the
group began contacting
“communitywide
stakeholders” to invite
them to participate
in a week of activities
for the public that are
designed to get people out,
involved and celebrating
the older members of
the community. These
stakeholders included
libraries, park districts,
senior organizations,
senior service agencies,
hospitals and senior living
communities. All were
invited to think creatively
about how they could
participate in Celebrating
Seniors Week by hosting
an event for the public
that would showcase
their offerings or provide
a specific service. For
example a library might
have an author speak on
an appropriate topic, a
senior community could
host an Ice Cream Social,
or the local park district
might invite a swing band
to come and perform. The
goal of these events is
merely to get people out and
involved; they are limited
only by the creativity of
the hosts. The response
from the communitywide
stakeholders, to date, has
been very positive, with
many asking for permission
to “run with the idea”.

age 13 Lee Brooke tried to
make a post-depression

tree three times he gave it up.
That was in the mid-1940s,
and may have been the last
time he quit any project.
Much later, Studs Terkel
would say of himself, “Curi-
osity never killed this cat.”
He could have been speaking
of Lee.
Now in his early 80s, he
arises very early to put in
another busy day. Not busy-
busy; meaningfully busy.
River Forest and Forest
Park people, institutions
and history - also some
travel books - with most
on the shelves of our local
libraries. And “library” is
a hot button word for Lee,
having spent 25 years as a
medical librarian, then set-
tling into the comfortable
niche of “town recorder,”
not historian, thank you.
Personally, the man is
a charmer, a gentleman of
the old school with an eye
twinkle, an inviting smile
and a general interest in
what you’re saying. He is
often seen with his partner,
1995. Together, they’ve
written nine volumes on
the local scene, plus travel
and art books. They feel co-
authorship may stimulate
their thinking, enliven their
writing and sharpen their
individual efforts.
Brooke’s driving force is
not that different from most
of us. He’s just more acutely
aware of it, and continues
to feed his curiosity. To get
a feel for the man, what he
does and how he honors
that most precious of com-
modities—Time—read the
final lines of Shakespeare’s
73rd Sonnet on age and time
passing; the one that ends,

To love that well which thou
must leave ere long.
Mr. Brooke’s latest work,
about local people who are
active and have attained
age 90, is due for publica-
tion soon after the First
Annual Senior Celebration

Expanding Our rEach

A program to study and treat prediabetes

Metamorphosis — noun:
A profound change in form from one stage to the next in the
life history of an organism, as from the caterpillar to the butterfly.*

In the second half of 2010, our Center for Diabetes and Endocrine Care transformed
the lives of 73 people with prediabetes through Project Lifestyle Change:
• 379 people were screened for prediabetes.
• 102 people were diagnosed.
• 73 people registered for prediabetes education and treatment.
• 42 people lost weight — one lost 20 pounds!

All 73 made a metamorphosis.

Because of this tremendous success, the diabetes center is excited to launch the
project’s next stage: ExpAnding Our rEAch. The prediabetes education and
prevention program is spreading its wings to screen, educate and change lives in
Elmwood Park and North Riverside.
