PROJECT TEACHING & LEARNING KOREAN LANGUAGE
INTRODUCTION
1.1 Background
Korean is becoming more and more popular as a second language with people all over the world
starting to learn it in order to develop their careers, learn about another culture or even
understand their favorite movie stars. Korean TV drama is popular all over Asia and gaining
popularity in other parts of the world, too.
Korean (한국어/조선말, see below) is the official language of Korea, both south and
North. It is also one of the two official languages in the Yanbian Korean Autonomous Prefecture
in People's Republic of China. There are about 78 million Korean speakers worldwide. In the
15th century, a national writing system was commissioned by Sejong the Great, the system
being currently called Hangul. Prior to the development of Hangul, Koreans had used Hanja and
phonetic systems like Hyangchal, Gugyeol and Idu extensively for over a millennium.
The actual language itself is interesting from an academic point of view, too. Hangul, the
most widely-used Korean writing system is a fantastic piece of linguistic design. The characters
are very clear, and easy to read and write. 1800 characters from the older writing system, hanja,
are also still taught in schools and present a challenge to even the most experience language
learners.
What is the importance of learning a new language? This question does not have just a
single answer because there are evidently numerous reasons why learning a new language is
important not only in the academe but as well outside the halls of education.
Department Content Compliance does not currently have an official class of teaching and
learning Korean language. The department recognized the need to set up a class a class since
over the past few months, Korean movies and television series have increasingly become more
popular. The trend has even risen as blockbuster films including Hollywood productions were
starred by Korean actors and actresses. Then on, Korean culture has been embraced by millions
of audiences as the entertainment industry integrated them in films, shows and even music.
