MALS-11 DEVILFISH

WEEK OF 2 May
DOD-SPONSORED ADVENTURE CAMPS FOR MILITARY TEENS
Beginning this summer, 12 Land Grant Universities will offer low-cost high adventure camps for military teens, 14-18 years of age, at 50 locations -
including one in Alaska and two in Europe. Four of the camps will offer high adventure opportunities to family members with special needs.
This initiative is part of a government-wide approach to supporting military families, announced by President Obama this past January.
"Strengthening our Military Families: Meeting America's Commitment," outlined four main focus areas to enhance support to military families. This
partnership between DoD and the USDA addresses one of the focus areas: to "ensure that military children are receiving the support and educa-
tion they need to thrive."
The Defense Department and the military services offer a wide variety of programs, policies and systems to promote good physical, emotional,
spiritual, educational and social health of military youth. The high adventure camp opportunities like those offered through this partnership are
not the norm, however. This initiative will give military teens experiences not typically available through military youth programs. Participation
will be available on a first-come, first-served basis for military teens-all branches and all components. Participation in most programs will be at
no-or very-low cost. Please refer to the following for more detailed information about each camp: http://militaryfamilies.extension.org/wp-
content/uploads/2011/03/Adventure-Camp-Brochure4.pdf. If you have further questions, please call Kelli Miller, M.Ed, Marine Corps School Liai-
son, 858-577-6633 Office 858-336-3251 BB.

Lifestyle Insights, Networking, Knowledge & Skills. L.I.N.K.S. offers an orientation to the Marine Corps lifestyle, helping Marines and their families under-
stand and adapt to the unique challenges military life often presents. Sessions cover military pay, deployment, base services, moving and much more.
One of our MALS-11 spouse’s, just recently attended L.I.N.K.S. and this is what she said about the session:
“I met new people, learned lots of info that I thought I already knew but just barely found out I only knew half of it. I got a better understanding of how
my Marine feels when they are getting ready for deployment and when they return how my emotions and point of view differed in many ways! Also, I
was finally taught and have a better understanding of what the Military Jargon my Marine uses means. The best part of it was, I had lots of fun and ate
delicious food!!”
