Description and Rationale for PROG1259


• provides an introduction to XHTML, the current standard for
Web publishing
• no prerequisite is assumed
• the Web has become an integral part of commerce and media
delivery
• HTML is the language for formatting and presenting Web pages
• knowledge of how to use, create, and customize well-formed
HTML is essential to anyone working with the Web.
• introduction to CSS for formatting web pages.

Key learning Objectives


• explain the purpose and syntax of the major elements in the
XHTML 1.0 standard
• create well-formed and valid HTML documents conforming to
the XHTML 1.0 standard
• create and modify page elements such as links, frames, tables,
forms, graphics, plug-ins and style sheets

Course Text
• no manditory book for course
• there may be a recommended book which will be discussed
• if not using the suggested book, some type of XHTML tag and-
format guide is necessary.
• instructor will supply handouts, resourses and/or Web URLs

Software requirements
• Browser such as Internet Explorer, Google Chrome,
- Mozilla Firefox will be used in class.
• Text editor such as BB Edit, Notepad, Notepad ++,
TextWrangler (not an editor such as DreamWeaver)
• FTP program (only necessary if you have web space that you
will be uploading files to)
- eg. Anarchie, Fetch, Cute FTP
• Adobe Photoshop or Photo Elements (or similar)

Sequence of Evaluation
• NOTE: the subject outline is a planning guideline; actual deliv-
ery of content may vary with circumstances.

Assignments
• usually, one assignment per week, due before the beginning of
the next class
- no late assignments accepted after beginning of class
- time in class will be allotted for work on assignments
- if a class is missed, the student must make arrangements
for missed work BEFORE the start of the next class.
• short quiz at the beginning of each class
• one major project due at the end of the course
- no mid-term or final exam
• hand in files: Print the code page from notepad. Also print the
validation page from the browser.

Course Delivery
• hands-on approach, using theory-practice, or lecture-lab format
• the first 15 minutes will be used for a short quiz
• the next 1 to 1.5 hours will be for lecture
• remainder of class for in-class work or assignments

Evaluation Criteria
• your evaluation in the course will be based on the following:
- quizzes (10) worth 20%; assignments (12) worth 55%
- major assignment (1) worth 25%
