³What were some of the reasons we discussed yesterday that were used to convince the main
character¶s parents to get her ears pierced? Refer back to your writer¶s notebooks for help to remember
some of the notes you took while we read and discussed.´

³Today we are going to work to fill out a graphic organizer based on ³Earings´ that will help us later in
the week when it is time to start working on more organized persuasive pieces. There are different parts
to our chart. The first is our opinion. Remember that when we are trying to persuade our readers to do
something, we must be sure to clearly express our own opinions and viewpoints. The rest of the chart
has spaces for reasons and supporting details. In the story earrings, what was the main character¶s
opinion? What reasons did she share with us that justified her opinion or helped to back up her thoughts
and how did she use details to make her reasons more convincing?´

³Glue the graphic organizer that is being passed out into your writer¶s notebook. As we work as a class
to fill it out, take notes so that you have a reference to use when you are using this chart to start/format
your own writing.´

³Today while you have writing time, look at the ideas you have come up with so far for persuasive
writing topics. Use the graphic organizer that we used in our mini lesson today to fill out your own
reasons and details. This will help you to structure your persuasive papers that we are going to work on
tomorrow.´

Next Day:
Provide the class with examples of student work from the previous day. Choose work that really
showed a command for the graphic organizer. Point out good details and a strong starting opinion.
*Remember to black out the names so that student¶s names can remain private.

Reflection:
When I am looking over the graphic organizers that the students used during their
writing time today, I can see that a lot of students are struggling with coming up with
strong details and reasons for their opinions. They are also still struggling to connect their
reasons and details. I think I am going to have to push off my fifth lesson and focus on
reasons and details that are strong and convincing before moving on. I think it would help
to see and discuss student work that is done correctly. I think that this will help, because
it will provide the class with more examples as well as show them that this work is
possible and that they can be successful with their own work.
