■ Mother Nature took the big win Saturday night at the Subway
Fresh Fit 150 Late Model race at Canaan Fair Speedway. 37 Late
Models adorned the pits in attempt to qualify for the high paying
event but were stopped in their tracks as rain took over the festivi-
ties after qualifying was completed. The Subway Fresh Fit 150 has
been rescheduled for Sunday June 5 at 2 p.m. With the likes of Brad
Leighton starting on the pole and Wayne Helliwell Jr. on the out-
side the top-10 starters looks like the Who’s Who of New England
asphalt Late Model racing. Behind the front row Joey Polewarczyk
will start third followed by Stephane Descoste in fourth and Bucky
Demers in fifth. Six through tenth feature the likes of Brian Hoar,
Quinney Welsh, Todd Davis, Mike Bruno and Aaron Fellows. I for
one was totally impressed with my first visit to Canaan Fair Speed-
way. The facility was clean, the pit’s roads were freshly paved,
the stands (nearly full) offered a view of the entire 1/3-mile rac-
ing surface. The track lends itself to fast paced side-by-side racing
on a surface that appears as smooth as any and unlike many New
England race tracks it is well lit, benefitting the drivers, fans and
photographers. If you haven’t penciled in the reschedule date at
Canaan, do it today before you forget and miss what possibly could
be one of the year’s best events.
■ Dirt track veteran Adam Pierson opened defense of his 2010
Bond Auto Sportsman Modified track title at Bear Ridge Speedway
on Saturday night with a win on opening night. Pierson of nearby
Fairlee, VT became the first driver to win a feature event under the
new DIRTCar sanction at the 44 year-old track. Louie Caldwell
made his return to full-time competition a solid one, earning run-
ner-up honors with Dan Eastman in a close third. Josh Harrington
swept both segments 20-lap segments in the Wells River Chevrolet
Coupe division to record his first victory of the young season. Like
Pierson in the DIRTCar Mods, defending Late Model champion
Will Hull of East Montpelier won a hotly contested event to open
his title defense.
■ It’s been nearly three years since a questionable NASCAR rul-
ing denied Regan Smith of his first Sprint Cup victory but Satur-
day night Smith finally received his due with an elusive win. Af-
ter staying out on old tires, Smith held off Carl Edwards to win
the Showtime Southern 500 at Darlington Raceway in a dramatic
green-white-checkered over-time finish. Smith slipped across the
line .196 seconds ahead of runner-up Edwards. Smith started the
event in 23rd, his worst qualifying effort of the year and hadn’t
won in 105 career starts. Running for a single-car operation out of
all places, Denver, Smith, 27 pulled off perhaps the second biggest
upset of the year at a track that has long favored veterans. Smith
followed Trevor Bayne, the 20-year old who won the Daytona 500
for the venerable Stuart, VA Wood Brothers team, another single
car operation whose roots are also outside NASCAR’s hub in Char-
lotte, NC. Smith became the sixth driver in Sprint Cup history to
pull off his first career win at the 1.33-mile track dubbed “Too
Tough to Tame” . “This is the southern 500- we’re not supposed to
win this thing,” Smith radioed to his crew after the race. I’ve never
even had a top five. I guess in this series, it just shows anyone can
win.” Brad Keselowski, also opting to stay out on old tires finished
third, with Polesitter Kasey Kahne running fourth and Ryan New-
man rounding out the top five. The win was redemption for Smith,
who was deprived of an apparent victory at Talladega in 2008 when
he was forced below the yellow out-of-bounds line that separates
the racing surface from the track apron and was penalized for pass-
ing Tony Stewart, who ironically came down to put Smith out of
bounds. Kahne, Edwards and Kevin Harvick took turns out front
during the second half of the race after early leader Kyle Busch
made an unscheduled pit stop. Busch had lead 78 laps when a vi-
bration forced him to the pits on Lap 205. And goods news, Regan,
NASCAR can’t take this one away.
■ All eyes were on Juan Pablo Montoya and Ryan Newman at Dar-
lington last weekend after a reported altercation in the NASCAR
hauler on Friday. The two drivers mended their P’s and Q’s and
refrained from any extra-curricular activity during the race but the
same couldn’t be said for Kevin Harvick and Kyle Busch. While
Regan Smith was celebrating a much deserved win in Victory Lane,
Harvick and Busch were swapping a little paint with their cars high
on the track. Harvick was upset over an incident in which Busch
wrecked him and an innocent Clint Bowyer on lap 363 of the 367
lap event. The paint swapping and along with a personal visit by
Harvick to Busch’s diver-side window continued on pit road. Busch
and Harvick were both summoned to the NASCAR hauler imme-
diately after. Bowyer, who was 12th on the previous restart, re-
ceived the brunt of the damage; finishing 31st, seven laps down and
dropped two spots in the point standing to ninth. Busch salvaged an
11th-place finish and remained third in points while Harvick was
scored 17th and is currently fifth in the standings.

ACT Contingency Programs Continue in 2011

The American Canadian Tour will continue contingency pro-
grams from Bassett Race Wheels, Five-Star Race Car Bodies,
Racing Electronics and Race Basics Chassis for the 2011 season.
These four companies provide product certificates for each event
on the ACT Late Model Tour and the Série Castrol Edge, as well as
contribute to the yearly point funds.
Five-Star Race Car Bodies of Twin Lakes, Wisc. has been work-
ing with ACT the longest of the four companies. They started their
program with ACT in 1991 and they’ve signed on through the 2013
season. Along with certificates for body parts for each ACT event
they also raffle off a certificate for a full body at the annual
Banquet of Champions held each January.
Concord, North Carolina’s Racing Electronics has been a part of
the ACT contingency program since 1992. Not only do they supply
certificates at each ACT event, they are also the official radio sup-
plier for the ACT Tour, Série Castrol Edge, and Thunder Road.
They supply many of the ACT Late Model teams with their radio
needs and attend several events each season with technical sup-
port.
Bassett Race Wheels of Burlington, Wisc. has signed on for their
13th season with ACT. For over 40 years the company has been
building the strongest, lightest, and truest steel racing wheels.
Drivers finishing in the runner-up position at each event in 2011
will receive certificates for Bassett wheels.
“The American Canadian Tour and Série Castrol Edge are out-
standing showcases for our products and we wish to thank ACT
racers for making Bassett the most popular wheel in the series,”
said Brian Gill, Director of Marketing for Bassett Racing Wheel.
Race Basics Chassis and Crazy Horse Racing of South Paris,
Maine supply chassis to many ACT teams as well as local racers
around the region. As a way of paying back the over 40 Late Model
teams they support, they have formed a program with ACT for
certificates for any Race Basic Chassis that finishes in the top three
for an ACT event and also any chassis finishing in the tenth posi-
tion for 2011.
“Crazy Horse Racing/Race Basics Chassis is excited to partici-
pate with the ACT US and Série ACT Castrol 2011 contingency
program. This is a great way for us to promote our business and the
love of the sport,” said co-owner of Crazy Horse Racing/Race
Basics Chassis Judy Green.
