The latest Ubuntu released. Ubuntu 10.10 Maverick Meerkat

introducted with some Great Features. The Latest Gnome 2.32, Shotwell Photo Manger and lot more are
included in Ubuntu 10.10.

Ubuntu Restricted Extras
Ubuntu Restricted Extras is a very interesting thing. This will install lot of custom softwares for everyday
needs. Ubuntu Restricted Extras will install Adobe Flash Player, Java Runtime Environment (JRE)
(sun-java-jre) with Firefox plug-ins (icedtea), a set of Microsoft Fonts (msttcorefonts), multimedia codecs
(w32codecs or w64codecs), mp3-compatible encoding (lame), FFMpeg, extra Gstreamer codecs, the package
for DVD decoding (libdvdread4, but see below for info on libdvdcss2), the unrar archiver, odbc, and
cabextract. It also installs multiple “stripped” codecs and avutils (libavcodec-unstripped-52 and libavutil-
unstripped-49). This is a single command approach.
For this open the terminal then type.
sudo apt-get install ubuntu-restricted-extras
This will take a while to install whole package. Keep your terminal open until the whole package list will be
installed. Otherwise you want to start everything from the scratch.
To install the packages below you just search in ubuntu software center and press install. But the command
terminal command will do the work more faster.
Ubuntu Tweak
Ubuntu Tweak is a great Package to Control the different features of desktop. It is a great configuration tool
for ubuntu. The current Version is 0.5.7.
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:tualatrix/ppa
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install ubuntu-tweak

A great Vector drawing and logo creating software which will replace Adobe Illustrator or Corel Draw.

Inkscape need some additional python libraries. So it is a bit heavy for an install.

A Good Photo manager and Album Collection Organizer.

A Good Photo Manager from Google. This Package will be downloaded from Google Picasa Website.

Audacious Audio Player

Audacious is an audio player for gnome. It look and feels like winamp. Lot of plug-ins and skins are available
for audacious.

DVD::Rip
DVD::Rip is a DVD backup/copy program, written in GTK-based perl, that uses the trans-code video/audio
processing and conversion tools. To install it type:
sudo apt-get install dvdrip
Audacity
Audacity is a state of art audio recorder and sound editor in Ubuntu. You can edit dubb audio using this
program. Lot of plug-ins are available for audio effects like audio reject, amplify, parametric equalizer etc…

Sound Juicer is a nice application for ripping cds. This programme support various codecs.

For getting MP3 export in audactiy you want to install audacity-freeworld.
K3b
K3b is a full featured disc burning tool which has all the features of Nero Burning rom. The current version
support Blu-ray burning also. This is a KDE Application. If you install on Gnome It will download all the KDE
Libraries. This will be a real overload.

Brasero is the default CD- DVD Burning progrmme in Ubuntu 10.10.

Anjuta is the default programming IDE for GTK. By using this with Glade you can create great Gnome
Programmes in a breeze.
sudo apt-get install anjuta
You can also try Netbeans, Eclipse for More Programming purpose like Java, Android etc ..
Also Vim and Emacs are powerfull editors featuring command line and GUI.
Eye Candy for Ubuntu 10.10

Compiz Fusion
Compiz Fusion allows you to use advanced desktop effects such as the rotating cube desktop.
sudo apt-get install compiz compizconfig-settings-manager compiz-fusion-plugins-main

Run Applications -> System Tools -> Compiz Fusion Icon. A blue icon will appear to the tray. From here you

Screenlets are small applications that are laying on your desktop. Eye candy stuff and useful in many ways.

Go to Applications -> Accessories –> Screenlets choose the screenlet you want click launch/add (you can
choose Auto start on login)

Cairo Dock is a light eye-candy fully themable animated dock for any Linux desktop. It has a family-likeness

GNOME Do (Do) is an intelligent launcher tool that makes performing common tasks on your computer

results (e.g. run, open, email, chat, play).

Java Applications in Ubuntu 10.10

To run Webex or Gomeeting you need Java Runtime Enviroment [JRE] applicaiton.
To install this You want to enable other repositories. Enable that in System > Administration > Synaptic
Package Manager > Settings > Repositories > Other Software and enable the partner repository. Now you can
either search for sun-java6-jre, sun-java6-plugin, sun-java6-jdk using Synaptic or type the following
commands in a terminal.
Sun Java Runtime Environment (JRE) and Firefox Java Plugin
confirm Firefox if it’s running, open a terminal and type:

sudo apt-get install sun-java6-jre sun-java6-plugin
Sun Java Development Kit (JDK)

If you want to build applications, applets, and components using the Java programming language you need to
install JDK.
sudo apt-get install sun-java6-jdk
Google Earth
Google Earth lets you fly anywhere on Earth to view satellite imagery, maps, terrain, 3D buildings, from
galaxies in outer space to the canyons of the ocean. You can explore rich geographical content, save your
toured places, and share with others. To install it type:
sudo apt-get install googleearth-package
make-googleearth-package --force

Afterwards you will find Google Earth under Applications > Internet > Google Earth

You can also try a lot of softwares like Shutter – Screen shot tool, Blogilo – Offline Blog client, Wine –
Windows programme runner, Virtualbox-ose – Run Windows desktop on virtual Machine, VMware – A
virtualization platform, Hydrogen – An audio sequence generator and more . Just search on Ubuntu Software
Center you can find a lot of softwares ready to install.
Ubuntu Login Screen GDM Configuration Tool

The new ubuntu is coming with GDM 2, which is used to manage the login system. It is not themeble as the
old login screen. But there is a tool available to change the Background image, Login Sound, Theme of GUI.
