II.

Nineta had dressed up, but she was not leaving, she sat in the armchair and went on like that about kids and her
story was not moving forward, so I could find out what she had been doing all these years, maybe even ten…. And,
without any apparent reason, she suddenly broke down into endless crying, similar to a Fantine whose children
were under the power of a miserable Thenardier, only that she was not as sick as her, she hadn’t sold her teeth
and hair to send them money, and the children’s father was not far from being a Thenardier… The guiltier and
more trapped she felt, the more, besides birthing them, she had not done anything for them. This brutal truth was
stopping her from opening up a trial and from winning at least one for herself. She couldn’t have heard the kids
choosing their father in court. “I asked him, said Nineta lighting up before a fatality, and they did not exactly say
no, it was worse, they went quiet, they didn’t answer me, meaning that for them the father was deciding, even
though when I asked them, he was not present. Only the youngest, who is my dearest, when it was only me and
him, asked me innocently, meaning that my former husband had not badmouthed me in front of them: “mother,
why won’t you come home?” Why won’t I come? He knew nothing, the poor boy, he thought I can come back and
don’t want to…”
