A class II student went blind by an eye
when her teacher allegedly pricked it with
a pin after she failed to answer a
question, police said on Thursday.
The teacher, Parasram Bhaina, allegedly
enraged over Shweta's inablility to answer
a question, beat her up and poked her in
the right eye with a pin on November 19,
said Katghora police station in-charge
Lalji Shukla.
Eight-year-old Shweta of Saraswati
Shishu Mandir school in Jurali village of
the district was rushed to hospital by her
father where doctors said she had lost
sight in her right eye. A case was

who is absconding, said Shukla.

KOLKATA: In a shocking example of gross
insensitivity, two Class VII students of a girls’
school in Nimta, North 24-Parganas, were
allegedly
stripped and searched by two teachers inside
a classroom on Tuesday afternoon. The other
students watched from outside and giggled at
their classmates’ ordeal.
The girls’ parents lodged a police complaint
against the two teachers and the
headmistress on Wednesday evening but
nobody has been arrested yet. The school
authorities said they have ordered an inquiry.
The incident occurred at Hardayal Balika
Vidyalaya, when a Class VIII student accused
two classmates of stealing Rs 50. Class
teacher Kabita Barui first went through the
two girls’ schoolbags. On not finding the
money, she summoned colleague Aditi
Maitra and the two teachers asked the other
students to leave the room and ordered the
two girls to undress. When they protested,
the teachers allegedly boxed their ears. The
other students stood outside the class and
watched.
The teachers let the girls go after a search
revealed nothing. The traumatized girls
pleaded that they be allowed to go home as
they were not well. The teachers let them
leave but warned that they should not “utter a
word” to their parents, police or the media.
The girls returned home and broke down
before their parents. The news spread and
the parents rushed to school. According to
them, headmistress Swati Kanjilal paid no
heed to the complaint and left the premises.
The parents turned up at the school again on
Wednesday morning. By this time, other
parents had joined the protest. When the
parents of the two girls went to meet Kanjilal,
she allegedly threw them out. They then
lodged a complaint at Nimta police station.
“Our daughter can be scarred for life. She’s
stopped speaking. Who gave them the right

to strip our daughters? If they were suspected
of wrongdoing, the authorities should have
summoned us,” said a girl’s mother. A

consider legal action action if the school did
not act. “The teacher had offered to give the
child private tuition. But her parents refused
as they were happy with the tutor they had.

Ahmedabad: A 16-year-old girl was raped by

her neighbour’s cousin after a tiff with her on
Thursday night. The girl was missing since 1
pm on Thursday. Local residents found her
unconscious near Kharikat canal on Friday
morning. The girl has named three youths as
accused in the case, including an
autorickshaw driver.

According to a complaint by the girl’s
father, she was abducted near her residence aug
at 1 pm when she went out to make a call to a
nearby phone booth. As per the complaint,
the girl had an argument over an issue on ust
Thursday afternoon and both had threatened
each other.
“She was abducted in an autorickshaw in 200
which her neighbour’s cousin Dharmendra
Mahate along with two others were present.
She was taken to an undisclosed spot and

raped repeatedly by Mahate, his friend and
the driver. The duo then left her with the
driver who again raped her in the night,” said
an Odhav police station official. Police have
arrested Mahate and search is on till for the
other two. The parents of the girl alleged
police of inaction even after they lodged a
complaint of missing person on Thursday.
Officials said the girl was the third child of
a couple, hailing from Uttar Pradesh, who
had come to the city 18 years ago. Her father
works as a worker in an iron moulding unit in
GIDC. The girl has two sisters and a brother.

Bharat Pawar. The boy was quizzed again by
the parents.
Pawar got disturbed because Nayan had
been beaten in a similar manner a year ago,
when he was in senior KG in the same school.
He went to the school and met Nayan’s class
teacher, Heena, asking her why his son was
beaten. The teacher said that Nayan was
weak in his studies and she had to punish
him for that.

Ten-year-old Shrushti Bhatt, who is a
student of Shriram Vidyalay — a special
school for mentally challenged children in
Bopal, was expelled a week ago after her 07
father, Indrajeet Bhatt, failed to pay Rs
25,000 he had taken as loan from the
school, two years ago. Bhatt has alleged

Shashi Bhatt, school trustee, when
contacted, said, “Let alone the loan, the
girl’s parents have not even paid the fee
for the past one and half-year. The girl
has not been expelled, she has only been
served a notice.”

Bangalore: Slapping or caning a student
is banned. Now, even scolding a child in
school can attract action. The Right to
Education Bill 2009, while laying down
that no child will be subjected to physical
harassment in schools, has banned
mental harassment.
The Bill, available with TOI, states that
whoever is found guilty would be liable to
disciplinary action under the service rules
applicable to that person.
Although most schools maintain that
they have banned corporal punishment,
they also say there was no clear definition
of corporal punishment or mental
harassment, and that each institution had
devised its own ways to ‘discipline’
students. With the passage of the Bill in
the Lok Sabha, the HRD ministry is
expected to define mental harassment,
too.
“Anything can be termed mental
harassment. We need to bring children
under some discipline as well. Teachers
in our school first advise the students; a
few times we warn them. In extreme
cases, we inform the parents,’’ said

law, schools hope that the HRD ministry

help recounted how she was exploited, beaten
and scalded by her employer, a small-time TV

Dhanorkar employed Rameshwari Jadhav,
bringing her to Mumbai four months ago
from her hometown in Amravati. She
promised the child's parents she would send
her to school. "They promised to educate me.
Instead, I was made to do all kind of work at
home and was even beaten up in front of the
children," said Rameshwari, her face puffy
and scarred.
She told police that Dhanorkar punched her
in the eyes and smashed her head against the
wall a fortnight ago. Three days ago,
Dhanorkar allegedly burnt her with a hot
spoon for eating shrikhand without
permission. Dhanorkar denied the
allegations, saying she was a "victim of
circumstances".
The gory abuse came to light on Friday when
neighbours saw the girl crying in the
apartment complex's garden. Seeing bruises
and burns on her, they alerted the police and
called for medical help.
"Members of the society informed me that
Urvashi had been beating up the 10-year-old
maid for the last one week. They had spotted
the kid crying in the garden with burn marks
on her hand. According to the doctor, the
injuries were the result of physical abuse.
Urvashi had even boxed her in her eyes; there
was a swelling on her forehead," chairperson
of the society, Indu Bhosale, told TOI.
Dhanorkar has a doctorate in business
management. The girl had been admitted to
Cooper Hospital in Vile Parle and was now at
a children's shelter.
When angry neighbours confronted Urvashi,
she denied hitting the child. Bhosale said,
"She told me that the girl's eyes were red
because honeybees had stung her and that
she had burned herself accidently." Urvashi
has been booked under Section 324
(voluntarily causing hurt) of the Indian Penal
Code, and Sections 23 and 26 of the Child
Labour Act.
She was produced before the magistrate's
court in Bandra and released on bail.
Reacting to the incident, Maharashtra labour 23
minister Nawab Malik said, "Child labour is a
crime, but abusing a child is an even bigger
