Good and bad deeds

An article by- Eng. B M Zafrullah

Introduction:

In the holy Quran, in many places it is mentioned that “those who do good deeds” they will go to heaven or
will be rewarded.

For instance in Chapter (Sura) 2 ,Al Baqarah, verse 25 , Almighty Allah says –“ And give good news to
those who believed and do righteous good deeds, that for them will be Gardens (Paradise) beneath which
rivers flow”.

Allah repeats a similar message in verse 62 of the same Sura – “ Whoever believes in Allah and the Last
day and does righteous good deeds , shall have their reward with their Lord. They should not have any
fear, nor shall they grieve”

Or in verse 82 of same sura Allah said - “But those who have faith and work righteousness, they are
companions of the Garden: Therein shall they abide (For ever).”

Allah again says in a different phrase in verse 195 of the same Sura – “And do good deeds, truly Allah loves
the good doers.”

Messages of similar nature have been repeated in many places of Holy Quran and the word “deed or
action” comes 360 times in the Quran . A very significant one which I want to mention is in Sura Al Asr
(Chapter 103) meaning “The Time”, where Allah the almighty stated the criteria of salvation as :-

1. By the time,

2. Verily , mankind is at loss,

3. Except those who believe and do righteous good deeds and recommend each other to truth and
recommend each other to patience.

Reading all these, a question came in my mind – What are the deeds that actually qualify as the good
deeds? In Allah’s eyes which deeds are considered as good?

At this moment of time ,my conscience classifies certain deeds as good and certain deeds as bad , but how
far my judgment is correct there is no way of knowing it. What I may consider as a good deed may not be
considered as good by my parents or my spouse or my siblings or my friends or my colleagues. So it
seemed to me that the concept of good and bad is totally individual , if left to be determined by the
individual!

This possibility of enormous variability raised a concern in me and felt the need of standardization .But then
question arises whom should be given the responsibility of standardization ? Can we leave it to our
intellectuals or our leaders or parliament ? Or can we conduct a referendum on each point and take what
the majority of the society or country say?

Nothing seemed to me as a full proof process that will guarantee 100% correctness!

Time and society dependence of concept of the good and the bad

In every society, in every age , people assigned certain deeds as good and certain as bad. Again, a deed
which was not considered as bad in the past in the same society , might be considered as bad in a later
date. For instance “Satee Daho” i.e. Burning of a wife live with the dead body of a husband in India few
hundred years ago or burial of female child alive after birth in Arabia thousand and four hundred years ago,
was not considered as bad. In fact “Satee Daho” has been prescribed in the Veda, the ancient scripture of
the Hindus. Or you can take the cases of human slaughtering in the name of sports and fun at the
Amphitheaters of Roman Empire which is a manifestation of extreme brutality when absolute power rests in
the hand of one man or a régime.

Further examples of necessary good act can be the ritual of human sacrifice, practiced in ancient times by
ancient cultures like the Incans, the Mayans or the Aztecs. It is estimated that approximately 20,000 people
per year were sacrificed by the Aztec royalty. The motivation behind the ritual sacrifices was the concept of
"tonalli," which means "animating spirit." The tonalli in humans was believed to be located in the blood,
which concentrates in the heart when one becomes frightened. This explains the gods' hunger for the heart.
Without this sacrifice, all motion stops, even the movement of the sun. So when the Aztecs made their
sacrifices, they were keeping the sun from halting in its orbit!

The Mayans believed that taking of a human life was deemed necessary to sanctify certain ritual occasions,
such as the ascendancy to the throne by a new ruler or the dedication of a new building.

Human sacrifice has long been eradicated in every society considering it as unjust and cruel ,either by
collective ruling or out of religious beliefs . In this modern era of science and technology , where a big
portion of the human race do not even believe in God , sacrificing a fellow man for any God will be
ridiculous and unthinkable.

However even in this 20th century news comes out from modern India that human sacrifices have been
made to make a structure say a bridge stable or human sacrifice has been made to Goddess Kali in a
remote temple by some ancient indigenous people.

Conversely a deed which was considered as bad in the past may be considered as not bad or good at
present. For instance Gay activities were considered as bad even in the recent past , but now by the grace
of modern Democracy , Gay marriages have been legalized in many European countries !

What is good and what is bad also varied from society to society. It seemed that religion, culture, know how
, the surrounding environment and how people interacted with that environment determined what will be
considered as good and what as bad. For instance among some African tribes staying naked was not
considered as bad or even cannibalism was considered as normal cultural behavior .In the absence of
know-how of making cloths or cultivation for growing food or not being able to control the environment
around them with technology ,these behaviors may have looked obvious things to do.

Even in this modern time in India , the Monks of Digambar Jainism known as “Digambaras” wear no cloth at
all and believe that women cannot have salvation unless they reborn as a man. Again still in modern India
the Hindu Religious practices have Jogini system ,where women of the lower castes are converted to
Joginis, on behalf of the temple God or Goddess she is supposed to satisfy the lust of the village men.

As human society evolved and knowledge of human beings kept on increasing and man slowly started to
understand part of the basic forces of nature and part of the properties of matter in the universe , values of

a society kept on changing over time .For example cutting of Trees for various use was not considered as
bad thing say 50 years ago , but now at the time of Global warming problem , cutting trees is considered to
be a bad thing at least to the knowledgeable part of the society. Similarly hunting of animals of any kind was
not considered as a bad thing and was considered as a part of sports and fun. But when man acquired the
knowledge that every little animal, insect or plant has its distinct place and role in the sustenance of this
planet and by indiscriminate hunting and de forestation many species has become instinct and many are
seriously endangered of extinction, then hunting for fun or even for consumption is now considered as a bad
thing to do. Recently scientists has found that there is certain type of orchid flower in the Amazons ,which’s
flowers have special pollen which male bees uses during mating to attract female bees. Now how in this
world earlier man would have imagined that that small orchid plant is responsible for bee reproduction and
in turn responsible for the formation of a giant rain forest? So cutting down just a insignificant orchid plant
might have a devastating effect in the long run!

Again in the recent past smoking was considered a symbol of aristocracy or manliness .But now smoking is
considered as an act done only by fools.

So what is good and what is bad seemed to remain as variable and as a function of time, place, knowledge
base and society.

It is always said that , the human beings are born with inherent sense of what is good and what is bad. But
even it is true, this sense in my opinion remains so deeply buried in an average human being that society,
environment , false religion or lack of knowledge can embed ideas or acts as good or bad in one’s mind
without any verification from that inherent sense system.

In other words can I accurately determine from what I know today what is a good deed and what is a bad
deed and will this determination pass the test of time i.e. remain valid till the end of time? By all means the
answer seemed to be ‘no’.

So, I thought the answer must be available in the holy Quran itself. All wise and holder of all knowledge
Allah must have narrated it or indicated it in his last Testament the Holly Quran. Accordingly, I started
looking for them in that vast revelation.

The purpose of creation and the assignment given to men:

And very soon in the 2nd Sura i.e. Sura Al Baqarah (the Cow) I found that Allah the all wise appropriately
explained the very purpose of creation of man and when the purpose is clear then the spirit of what man
should do also becomes clear save the nitty gritty of it which Allah all wise detailed over a little more than
22 years period to prophet Mohammad (pbuh) whenever he (the prophet) needed guidance on a particular
issue. All these became clear to me when I came across a little story that Allah the all wise narrated which
caught my eye and made me ponder deeply. The story is about the dialog Allah had with the Angels when
He desired of creating man. In Chapter 2 verse 30 Allah said -

“Behold, thy Lord said to the angels , I will create ‘ Khaliifah’ (vicegerent/ representative/ caretaker) on
earth”. They said: “will you place therein those who will make mischief therein and shed blood? - while we
glorify You with praises and thanks and sanctify You!” He (Allah) said: ‘I know that you do not know.”

Now if Allah the almighty has created us and placed us on this earth as his vicegerent/ representative/
caretaker with all the required environment, resources, and abilities, then it must be required by us to
uphold His policies and principles .We must remain loyal to Him, praise Him, remain thankful to Him, and
maintain communication link with Him (as He is the Boss and the provider). To represent Him, we must
show in miniature form, with very limited abilities of ours, some of the qualities Allah posses. Now if you
think about Allah who beside binge the almighty and creator of all the Worlds has all the knowledge and
wisdom possible will logically be Just, truthful, kind, full of love ,caring, considerate, compassionate, merciful
,sincere, etc .and all other good qualities that you can possibly think of .So obviously Allah expects us
(whom He nominated as Khaliifah) to be knowledgeable ( He has given us the capability to gain knowledge
to a certain extent) and to posses all the possible good qualities we can think of and do good deeds and
properly take care of His creations -this universe, this planet, it’s environment, resources He has implanted
for us , fellow man, animals, plants in other words everything in this universe.

Again Allah is informing us in Chapter 2, verse 27 and in chapter 7 verse 172 that we as offspring of Adam
(pbuh) in our soul state have ratified strong covenant to Allah that He is our creator and Lord and that we
will remain loyal to Him (though we don’t remember it now). Allah in Chapter 2, verse 27 therefore saying
that He has instructed not to break this relationship of Creator and Khaliifah and He is narrating that “those
who break Allah’s Covenant after ratifying it and sever what Allah has ordered to be joined (i.e. that
relationship) and do mischief on earth, it is they who are the losers”.

Therefore Allah does not want us to break the relationship and therefore want us to remain pure , do all right
and just things yet enjoy the bounties and good things He has provided for us on this earth . In fact He has
provided all things that we need, so we need to fulfill our obligation as Khaliifah and regularly turn our face
to him in gratitude and maintain that relationship, though he has given us weaknesses like hunger ,lust,
pride, anger, envy etc. On the other hand, he has given us the biggest brain in the animal kingdom and
hands with flexible fingers and abilities to judge right from wrong , provided us with qualities like patience
,able to love unconditionally ,compassion , humbleness etc and ability to attain highest form of purity and
wisdom through gaining knowledge and His guidance and thus overcome those weaknesses.

Allah continued the story He was narrating in Chapter 2 verse 30 and depicted the story of how the first
man Adam (pbuh) and his wife lost the place in Paradise because of disobeying Allah by the conspiracy of

Satan (Iblish) and Allah said to them ( Adam ,Eve and Iblish) “get you down all, with enmity between
yourselves .On earth will be a dwelling place for you and an enjoyment for a time ( Chapter 2, verse 36) .

So Adam, Eve (pbut) and Iblish were sent to earth and Adam and Eve (pbut) repented to Allah who
pardoned them and said to them “get down all of you from this place ( the Paradise) , then whenever there
comes to you Guidance from Me, and who ever follows My Guidance, there shall be no fear on them, nor
shall they grieve (Chapter 2, verse 38) .

So by the passage of time, whenever mankind forgot the relationship with the creator the almighty Allah, He
sent guidance to mankind through his selected Warner the Prophets. His last revelation being the Quran,
definitely it is expected to be filled with complete guidance.

So I kept looking in His last revelation for the Guidance He promised and in an attempt to list out the ‘do’s
and the ‘do not’s.

While doing so my past life flashed back on me, I remembered that once I was a Government servant in my
country and the highest ranked officers were those who were in the so called cadre service and they were
taught and are supposed to follow two things – one is the ‘Business Rules’ and the other the ‘Conduct
Rules’. In the business rules the hierarchy of authority and the processes of doing the assigned business
are defined and in the conduct rules what an officer should or should not do while he or she is in service
are laid out. When I was going through the translation of the Quran, it seemed to me that Allah the almighty
has given both the Business Rules’ and the ‘Conduct Rules’ for His Khaliifas in the same book.

As we have forgotten our covenant with the creator Allah ( in fact the Arabic word for man “Insun” actually
means the one who forgets) , the first thing He is saying Chapter (Sura) 2 ,Al Baqarah, verse 25 of the
Quran is to “believe” (in Islamic monotheism- i.e. There is only one God who is the creator, the sustainer,
the cherisher and that since the arrival of man on earth, time to time He has sent His guidance i.e.
revelations to His Prophets who in turn have spread it to their people or the mankind, that He has assigned
up on us a special responsibility to function as His Khaliifa on this earth for a limited period and after we
finish our term which will be ended through our death, He is going to take account of what we have done in
the allotted time on the day of judgment and reward or punish us according to our deeds that we have
performed during the period we were alive). Then He is saying to do righteous good deeds, which should
be a natural consequence of that firm belief. The man or the woman who believed (all that I wrote in the
foregoing parenthesis) and considers himself or herself as His Khalifa shall only do righteous good deeds
because those deeds normally a Khalifa would do.

The test:

Allah the almighty and all wise created the angels who do not have their free wills and they are like robots
who precisely carry out Allah’s command whenever He commands.

But it seems that Allah wanted to create something with high intelligence but with free will , with a sense of
what is good and what is bad built in their hearts , but with weaknesses like hunger ,lust, pride, anger, envy
etc in one hand but provided with qualities like patience ,able to love unconditionally ,compassion ,
humbleness , kindness , ability to become affectionate, sacrifice for others , to share etc on the other hand
and He wanted to see can intelligence win despite there is the free will to choose evil.

One has to realize that Allah gave mankind the brain to gradually acquire and accumulate knowledge about
the things around them on this planet and beyond and the ability to write and read and He Also time to time
sent the guidance and divine knowledge through His Messengers and reminded mankind the purpose of
its existence , the dos and do nots and the way of achieving real peace. He incidentally has also sent Iblish
(Satan) to this earth with certain abilities to raise the stake , who’s prime job will be to misguide mankind
from the true path. So here lies the test, do a man with intelligence , with ability to read ,to write , to hear
and speak and with the good qualities given to him/her uses his/her free will to choose the truth and right
path or he or she chooses the false and the wrong path and do harm to themselves and to others.

The phrases used to identify good and bad deed in the Quran

For the sake of understanding the theme explained so far, let me repeat what Allah the almighty said in
Chapter (Sura) 2 ,Al Baqarah, verse 25 , Almighty Allah said –“ And give good news to those who believed
and do righteous good deeds, that for them will be Gardens (Paradise) beneath which rivers flow”.

The Arabic words used for righteous good deed is “ Amilus Saalihaati “ and as stated earlier these words
were repeated several time in the Quran.

Now how do we identify the “ Amilus Saalihaati “ ?

The answer is ,in the Holy Quran, Allah the all wise have used certain phrases to describe what is a good
deed ( i.e. Amilus Saalihaati) . For example while defining good deeds Allah has said one or other of the
following-

 “Those who does this, this and these , they are at the right path”
 “Those who does this, this and these , give glad tiding to them that for them there is rewards for
instance a place in heaven
 Successful are those who does this this and this
 Defined who can be called as a pious (Al Muttaqun) or a believer (Mumin)
 Allah loves those who does this, this and this.
 Allah is with them who does this , this and this.
 Or Allah the most merciful has straight forward said - do this ,this and this

Oppositely, while defining bad deeds or bad doers Allah has said one or other of the following-

 And those do this ,this and this , they are the losers.
 Woe to those who does this and this
 And those do this ,this and this, they shall be consigned to grievous torment
 And those do this ,this and this, Hell in which they will burn and what a evil place to settle in !
 For doing some thing Allah has said that there will be some sort of punishment
 For those acts Allah says it negates the Iman ( the belief)
 Allah the most merciful has straight forward said - do not do this, this and this

Now as I have referred to the examples of my Government service where we had to do deeds which fall
under two categories i.e. the deed following the Rules of Business and those following the conduct rule ,
the righteous good deeds can also be divide into two categories , deeds which are directly involved in
keeping the Khaliifa- Creator “link/contact “, in other words the acts of worshiping the creator ,the
sustainer, the cherisher – say deeds like praying (Salah), fasting for the sake of Allah, charity (Zakat) in the
name of Allah, pilgrimage (Haj) for the sake of Allah etc and good deeds which are involving our conduct
with the outside world ,i.e. with fellow man, society, environment and the whole creation.

The acts of worships are well known. What I was interested in was good deed of the second category
involving our interactions in our daily life with fellow man, society, animals, environment and the whole
creation. The good deeds those if you recognize and perform will take you to the highest level of
Character and make your heart 100% pure.

However I will list out both types of the Good deeds and the bad deeds.

Conclusion :

If you analyze all the Good deeds that Allah has told us to do in His last testament , it all make perfect
sense. They all seem to be the right thing to do from the point of view of justice and equal right for every
body . Performing them all , is likely to bring universal brotherhood of man as one species and preserve
this planet’s beautiful environment , animals , flora and fauna. Dividend of all these good deeds are
peace of mind , love and affection from each other . They all if followed by every body will lead to a
society of justice , harmony and a society where only love and peace prevails, the earth will then
definitely become the paradise even before the last day .

On the other hand what Allah identified as bad deed also make perfect sense for not doing them .as
they will only mean harm to ourselves , to others , to every thing on this planet and only establish
injustice , inequality , pain and sufferings to the weak.
