Recently we changed our name to “The AiS
PhotoGroup.” We meet every 2 weeks on
Thursday at 4:30PM at Digital Darkroom

Our group started in Summer 2009. On that
day, almost 20 photo students signed in to the

We are YOUR Student Council
The Student Council at The Art Institute
of Seattle is the governing student group in
charge of overseeing student clubs, authorizing
funding for clubs as well as some activities
and helping with the overall community
development on campus. Also, the Student
Council hears concerns from students and
meets quarterly with the President of school
to discuss their ideas and concerns while also
retrieving updates.
This is WHAT we do
The Student Council at the Art Institute of
Seattle consists of two seats representing each
program. Student Council Representatives
share information about their program, voice
student concerns, and take part in the quarterly
oversight of clubs, club funding, activity
planning, events and the annual Noel-Levitz
Student Satisfaction Survey. The Student
Council meets with the Art Institute of Seattle’s
President on a quarterly schedule, at minimum.

WHY you should get involved
Getting involved in Student Council is an
excellent way to learn about committee
representation, group work and leadership.
If you were to be approved to participate in
Student Council, you would learn to work
closely with a team of very engaged students
from a variety of programs. Student Council
participation is one of the kinds of leadership
qualities that some employers seek. If reads
well on your resume and shows a commitment
to something outside of the regular classroom

Student Sponsored Housing provided by our
educational institution is a humble collective of
residents from wildly diverse backgrounds. Not
only do these residents come from different
geographic regions reaching far across the
globe, but interests and hobbies are as diverse
as the objects in your grandmother’s medicine
cabinet. Vick’s Vapo Rub included.
Located right on the corner of 2nd and Lenora
Street amidst the bars and bistros of Belltown,
The Lenora is a swift five minutes walk away
from our main campus which is one of its fine
perks. As a resident myself, at no time was I
concerned about parking, traffic or waking
up too early for that eight a.m. Monday
morning class. But, if the residents should find
themselves pressed for time in the morning
and need that extra kick to start their day, a
Starbucks Coffee shop is conveniently located
on the buildings first floor, adjacent to Blond
hair salon and Wann Japanese restaurant on the
east side of 2nd street.
As a resident within this establishment for
just over two years, I have been granted the
supreme pleasure to meet and network with the
diverse group which I have already described.
I find myself surrounded by students from all
program backgrounds and am able to relate and
discover aspects about their program to be used
for my own benefit. This calls for an example. I
am enrolled in the Industrial Design program at
school, so let us say that I have a product which
I have designed and developed all the way up
to the creation of a model, but I still need some
bomb final pictures taken of said model. I can
either advertise within student housing, or find
my friend (let’s call him Morpheus) who is a
photographer, who just so happens to need to
have product pictures taken for a project of his
own. It’s a win win for Morpheus and I. Plus
our networking base has expanded by one.

Another perk of student is playing the role of a
homework tester for those wonderful students
who are enrolled in or institution’s culinary/
baking and pastry programs. A creative mind
requires fuel, and what better roomies could
there be than the ones who cook all day long?
I suppose the only time that situation would
not be desirable is if the roommate was not the
best cook. But at least they are in their chosen
program to get better right?
Overall, school sponsored housing is a very
social environment where residents can
mingle and participate in social programs
which are planned by the Student
Housing Resident Assistant staff. These social
programs range from waffle and root beer floats
nights, movie nights, trips to the nearby E.M.P.
and aquarium, and even the zoo just to name a
few. Oh and did I
mention that 96.43%-99.332% of the time
these events are free to the residents? Please
do not inquire about where I am pulling these
percentages from.
This entire description has come from my
experience as a resident within student housing,
but also as Resident Assistant for the building.
I have been able to meet and connect with new
people every new quarter, and have established
strong relationships that I would not have
developed anywhere else. We residents are but
a fraction of the entire school population, but
what powerful fraction that is.

Hello AiS community! My name is Megan
Kijewski and I am the new Dean of Student
Affairs at the Art Institute of Seattle campus.
I am truly honored and excited about the
opportunity to work cooperatively with our
students, faculty and staff towards a more
inclusive and engaged learning community
on campus. My work in both domestic and
international student affairs has allowed me
to understand the complex needs of college
students from a wide variety of cultures and
backgrounds. During my tenure, I aim to
improve student retention and access to campus
and community services designed to support
our student body.
College affords students the ability to explore
diverse areas of interest as well as develop a more
coherent and fulfilling sense of being. As Dean,
my goal is to foster this exploration through
co-curricular programming, community
service opportunities, and continuous support
of our student body through outreach and
support services. I believe strongly in student
engagement and am an active advocate for
strengthening our student run clubs and
organizations on campus. As a community, it
is imperative that we work together towards a
shared experience and a supportive educational
environment free of intolerance or exclusion.
The Student Affairs department is located on
the 5th floor of the North Campus. Please come
by and say hello to our wonderful staff and take
advantage of all of the services available to you as
a student. If you need assistance with housing,
disability services, international advising,

 The Art Institute of Seattle’s
annual fashion show
On the March 10, The Art Institute of Seattle
presented “Fashion Roulette” its 13th annual
fashion show; the annual runway exhibition is
created and produced from the Fashion Design
and Fashion Marketing programs at The Art
Institute of Seattle.
This year’s “Fashion Roulette” show was in
recognition of current ready-to-wear spring and
fall 2011 trends. Featured local designers included
well-known names from our talented student
body, Elisabet Kristofersdottir, Cindy Marlatt,
Megan Cherewatenko, Lina Zeineddine, Justin
Bartle, and Isaiah Whitmore.
The show boasted 80 to 100 outfits within eight
themes, and every detail of production, from
visual effects, marketing and promotion, model
styling and public relations was coordinated from
concept to execution by fellow Art Institute fashion
students. Joan Kelly, also a well-known name in
our location, was again the executive producer and
brought her abilities to the production.
From themes like Lady Like to Easy Rider, there
was a mix of styles that everyone could enjoy. The
fur was in full force with this fur-trimmed piece
above from Isaiah Whitmore. After researching
the trends of the future, he had an array of leather
and fur in his line which had its own theme: Easy
Rider. There were a number of full leather pieces
by Lina Zeineddine, who incorporated the idea of
thigh-high stockings but with her own twist; they
almost had the look of chaps, but way more sexy
and without the cowboys.

On the lighter side of things there were charming
garments by Megan Cherewatenko that included
bright colors and classic looks. Some of these
garments can still be seen in the North campus
hallways. The trendy sheer fabric was all over the
runway. The Lady Like theme was reminiscent
of a resort somewhere in the beauty of Greece.
It was evident that the clothing from Cindy
Marlatt was well thought out and produced by
a talented woman. All the trends were seen- the
leather, fur, lovely lace-as well as a mix of prints
were wrapped up together to create one cohesive
line. Of course with all the innovation at our
school, there was masterfully crafted menswear.
One of the noted looks included Justin Bartle,
who is known for his dream-like gowns, won
best red-carpet look with a silver suit that was
paired with a low draped black top and some
dark shades to top off the look.
This show occurs annually and is made possible
by a different class of fashion marketing students
every year who team up with the fashion design
students. By showcasing the talent at our
institute, they are putting their passion out there
for the world to see. The incorporation of video
students as well as audio students really makes
this a show that is fully produced by students.
Make sure you make it to next year’s show! They
just keep getting better so there’s no way you can
predict what is in the making for the future. *

The story of five Fashion Marketers who set out to create
the Perfect Prom for high school girls across Seattle.

On a cool and dreary Sunday in March, one
senior girl found a bit of sunlight as she walked
through the doors of The Perfect Prom, an
event designed to provide hope to those who
may not otherwise have the prom experience
every girl deserves.
With prom dates rapidly approaching, the
quest to find the perfect dress begins early for
many senior girls. Hours are spent searching
for that one dress that will embody the entire
night with little focus on how expensive it
all may be. However, with the slowly rising
economy, many parents simply cannot afford
the exorbitant prices that come, not just with
the dress, but with any accessories, shoes,
dining, and/or transportation.
The Fashion Marketing team, made up of
Aubreyana Anderson, Ashley Thomas, Hannah
Leahy, Maria Harris, and Sarah Meyers,
planned the event based on their own positive
memories and personal prom experiences.

At 11:00am on dreary Sunday, March 13th,

many senior girls. Hours are spent searching

the exorbitant prices that come, not just with
the dress, but with any accessories, shoes,
dining, and/or transportation.
The Fashion Marketing team, made up of
Aubreyana Anderson, Ashley Thomas, Hannah
Leahy, Maria Harris, and Sarah Meyers,
planned the event based on their own positive
memories and personal prom experiences.
Their goal, with the help of a supportive staff
of volunteers, was to allow all high school girls
with the ultimate “perfect prom” experience.
They did so with over 400 donated dresses,
on-site makeup consultations, styling services,
DJ music, handsome escorts, and raffle items
worth over $2500 in gifts of limo rides, up-
do hair styling, nail services, and prom night
dining.
While the team had hoped for at least twenty
girls to attend the event, they were thrilled
when Carmen walked through the doors.
Fitting the exact target audience, she was the
first and only attendee. Carmen received all
of the team’s attention and was treated like
V.I.P. giving her the prom experience that
most girls only dream about. Thrilled to be
given the opportunity, Carmen and her team
of Fashion Marketers created a happy and
successful memory together, one that would
hopeful become the first of many for Carmen’s
very own Perfect Prom.

This spring, the AiS Girl Gamer Club (GGC)
was given the opportunity to attend the
Emerald City Comicon, held at the Washington
State Convention Center. The halls were filled
with cosplayers, talented artists, friendly
celebrities, and a ton of happy attendees,
making the convention a great success! I was
more than pleased to witness two of the Star
Trek cast challenging each other to a bit of
Picard impersonations, the Boondock Saints
duo giving out high fives, and Seattle’s own
superhero, Phoenix Jones, glancing over a stack
of comics. Several of us also caught a panel for

“The Guild”, featuring actress and writer Felicia
Day where we were excited to hear about her
journey as a pssionat gamer as well as actress,
writer and producer.
Felicia joined together with a group of friends

Felicia: “Cloak of invisibility. I like to eavesdrop!”
GGC: Would you ever consider writing for an
indie game?
Felicia: “Definitely would be interested in
writing for games, although my schedule is
quite busy right now, so it’s a dream list goal
for now!”
GGC: Is there any game related role of project
you dream or hope to undertake?
Felicia: “I’d love to be portrayed as a character
in a game, a companion character maybe, that
would rock.”
GGC: What do you think about organizations
like GameCrush and girls who use the label of
female gamer to their advantage?

creativity will continue to entertain us in her
upcoming projects.

Opening Party
Down in Pioneer Square, tucked in between
an array of boutiques and eateries is the
Poster Museum, a new edition to Seattle’s
already lengthy list of museums. This is not
your average museum with rooms and rooms
of several types of art. This space has been
created to highlight one of the oldest and most
interesting mediums; the poster. With high
white walls and a long and narrow layout, the
Poster Museum is an understated and quaint
space that provides a perfect background to
display the pieces.

celebrated its opening with a show of some of
the greatest and most innovative poster artists
of the Pacific Northwest. Artists on display

Each artist had their own section of a wall
where their posters were displayed proudly
next to small biographies describing the artist
and their story of their impressive work.
The exhibit was colorful and exciting and
worth taking a few trips around to see the
work more than once. Many visitors gathered
in the space to enjoy viewing some of the most
famous posters that have been created. From
designs featuring the old-fashioned Dick’s
Drive in to concert posters for Bon Iver and The
Flaming Lips, there was something for everyone.
The Art Institute’s very own David Gallo was
also a featured artist at the opening party.
Gallo has been designing posters since 2003
and created his own business, Weapons of Mass
Design. He first learned how to print in a class
at The Vera Project and has been designing and
printing ever since. His work has brought him
a long way. He was particularly surprised when
they asked him to participate in this show.

“I was shocked when they asked me to be in
the show,” Gallo said. When he heard the
other designers that would be featured, he was
flattered to be offered a chance to be displayed
alongside them. “They told me

for events around the area,
including concerts at The Vera
Project where his career was
jump-started and has since
flourished.

On a rare lovely sunny
afternoon in Seattle, I sat
in a delightful coffee shop
on Capital Hill, happily sipping a
caramel latte and paging through The Stranger.
Nestled in my chair I absorbed every word of
an article written by Jen Graves, top Seattle
Art Critic, entitled “What’s wrong with art in
Seattle? Our art schools, according to SAM’s
outgoing contemporary curator.”
Now, having just completed by first quarter at
the time, my hackles got a little overexcited.
Michael Darling, in the final moments of his
time as curator of the Seattle Art Museum
provided an interview wherein he challenged
the University of Washington’s art programs,
the programs at Cornish College of the Arts
and The Art Institute of.....wait. Nope. Not
one mention of The Art Institute of Seattle; and
that, my friends, is what got me really thinking.
“Seattle needs to revolutionize its Masters of
Fine Arts program at the University of
Washington;” Mr. Darling is quoted as
saying. “I think that’s the number one thing
holding back the Seattle art scene.” According
to Jen Graves “This is just one man’s opinion
- that Seattle is not going anywhere until the
art schools get better - but he’s a powerful,
knowledgeable man and it’s a strong opinion,
not easy to dismiss, something that’s going to
be argued over for probably many years.”
As it turns out, Ms. Graves has a
gift for prophecy, as this article has
brought up incredible discussions
between myself and several of the
faculty at The Art Institute of Seattle. It
sparked a sense of wonderment and curiosity
in me and so, even without donning a Sherlock
Holmes costume or taking up smoking a pipe,
I headed to the phone in search of the truth.
My first call was to Michael Darling; he had
recently taken a position as curator of the
Chicago Contemporary Art Museum, and
even though the weather was taking some
getting used to, he was thoroughly enjoying
his time in the Windy City and was more than
happy to take my call. I dove in headfirst,

explaining who I was and asking the question
that was utmost in my mind.
“Mr. Darling, in this article you challenged the
leadership of Cornish and the University of
Washington. Why didn’t you mention The Art
Institute of Seattle?” His response was not in
any way what I expected.
“I don’t want to offend you,” he replied, kindly.
“But the Art Institute...” he paused “...doesn’t exist.”
What? How could this be true? The Art
Institute of Seattle has been around since
1946, originally as the Burnley School,
becoming a part of the Art Institutes in 1982.
What could he possibly mean? He continued
“At least in the fine art scene, it doesn’t exist.”
Apparently, The Art Institute of Seattle, being
a liberal art or commercial art school, is not
considered a fine art school. “I wouldn’t have
even known about the Art Institute except
that I was asked to speak at graduation four
years ago.” Mr. Darling stated. “Other than
that, I didn’t know that the Art Institute
even does art.” He paused again. “I mean,
at least the University of Washington has
a gallery to display their students work.”

“I don’t want to offend you,” he
replied, kindly. “But the Art
Institute doesn’t exist.”
Mr. Darling in no way wanted to diminish my
enthusiasm for AIS or for fine art in general, he
was just stating his opinion. However, as one
of the top Seattle Art Critics once said, “This
is just one man’s opinion - that Seattle is not
going anywhere until the art schools get better -
but he’s a powerful, knowledgeable man and
it’s a strong opinion, not easy to dismiss...”
I spoke with the aforementioned art critic from
the Seattle Stranger; on her way into a meeting,
Ms. Graves took a few moments to talk about
her article with me, as well as offer her input in
regards to my conversation with Mr. Darling.
“He’s correct;” was her reply to my inquiry.
“The Art Institute of Seattle doesn’t exist - in
the fine art world. They may be turning out
great designers, but no great artists.” Though
Ms. Graves admitted a lack of research on The
Art Institute of Seattle (AIS), her response
alluded to the idea that while The Art Institute
of Seattle may be turning out great designers, it
does not focus on turning out great artists. Ms.
Graves said that she was anxious to be shown
otherwise, and would love the opportunity
to see AIS put together a gallery showcasing
the staff and students work. I assured her an
invitation to our next event.
So the Art Institute of Seattle is not a real art
school, eh? We shall see.

“The boundaries are blurred
between art & design,” explained
Scott Carnz, Dean at AIS.
I turned at once to Scott Carnz, the new Dean
at AIS. He was really interested to hear what
the fine art world in Seattle was thinking, and
happy to discuss it with me. “That’s a delicate
question, Ms. Phillips.” he said, leaning back
in his chair. “because we’re not a fine arts
school.” (Okay, some of you already knew all
this before you started. Stop laughing.)
“The boundaries are blurred between art and
design,” he explained. “It’s no longer a gallery
opening that gets you a job. It’s all about
your portfolio, coupled with self promotional
materials.” Scott explained that even though
students at AIS strive towards a Associates of
Applied Art (AAA) or A Bachelors of Fine Art
(BFA), the Art Institute of Seattle provides
students with an excellent education in commercial
arts. “For lack of a better term.” he demurred.
In speaking with Jim McLachlan, long time
instructor at AiS, I was informed that there
are many - MANY - instructors who make
a living in the fine arts world. Not “made”,
but still make a living from their fine art.
Barry Scharf, whose biography reads “Master
painter, sculptor, and digital artist with a 40+
year history of professional exhibitions in
galleries and museums.” The understatement
of the century for a man who founded the Los
Angeles Contemporary Exhibitions (LACE),
is a three time Guru Award finalist and has
taught at SIGGRAPH 2007, the largest and
most respected convention on animation,
to name just a few of his accomplishments.
Barry has been a teacher at AIS since 1996.
Julie Berger who started out her career designing
jewelry and whose metal work can be seen all
over Seattle; her last project included the design
of the Mercer Island Sound Transit station.
Carl Jackson has been an artist and an art
instructor for almost 30 years, twelve of those
years have been spent at Ai Seattle. He has also
been an illustrator, arts administrator, and gallery
director. His work is included in various public
collections including the Boston Public Library,
The Brooklyn Museum and Rutgers University, these
are just a few of Jackson’s incredible accomplishments.
Artist Bill Cumming taught at AIS, for almost 50
years before his passing in November of last year.
Cumming’s art is known throughout the world
for it’s interpretation of the social climate, and
his accomplishments in life are far too numerous
to mention. In an interview before his passing
he discussed his years of teaching, claiming
to be doing it for the money, but admitting
to enjoying the interaction with students.
"I teach them to stand on their own
feet and find their own style.” stated
Cummings in an online interview.
“Everybody is born with the power
to draw. It's taken away from them.
I try to give it back."
AIS professor Andree Carter has art
pieces currently commissioned at Hotel
Max, The Ogden Museum of Fine Art,
Nieman Marcus and the Hyatt New
Orleans among others. Carter has been
featured in galleries such as the Seattle
Art Museum, Gallery 6311, and the Bellevue
Art Museum and is currently featured at
Heriard Cimino Gallery in New Orleans
and the Pacini Lubel Gallery in Seattle. She
has been an Art Institute teacher since 1998.

And the list goes on. The Art Institute of Seattle
strives to provide a mix of fine and commercial
artists as instructors, giving students a healthy mix
of both fine art, and the design that is their passion.
That’s the answer then, is it? The Art Institute
doesn’t exist. But essentially, it doesn’t have to.
“The biggest difference between art and design,”
says Scott Carnz, AiS Dean “is that art is about
the artist; design is not about the designer.”
No real mystery there, I realized, calmly removing
the Sherlock Holmes tweed hat from my head.
So, while the art schools in Seattle may be
responsible for what’s wrong with art in Seattle,
the Art Institute is busy turning out designers.
Apparently, it’s elementary, my dear Watson.

joined Art Institute of Seattle Interior Design
faculty, S. Joshua Brincko, to design the recent
renovations to the Lenora Lobby where many
of our students live. Dean James Robson had a
vision of transforming the stale space into a hub
of activity where students could enjoy college
life and meet their classmates. Dean Robson
sought the help of Interior Design Director,
Bill Edgar, to formulate a team of designers,
and he immediately approached the Interior
Design Club. The

“Have you ever had a secret?”
A tall, lanky, be-spectacled man walks out on
stage in front of a huge screen showing The

of Washington went absolutely wild. He
wanders across the stage with a huge, goofy
smile on his face, looking like every kind of
computer geek you’ve ever met. He sits on a
stool in the middle of the stage and asks his
question, “Have you ever had a secret?” He
pulls a small box out of his pocket and begins
to carefully open it and pull out a pile of post
cards. “I like to think about everyone keeping
their secrets in a box...and everyone makes a
choice to either bury it like a coffin...” He
gazes around the auditorium. “...or to let that
secret out like a gift.”
“I ate the last of the

Post Secrets started as a community art
project in 2003, but there’s more to the
story than that. Frank Marshall, the brains
and the heart behind the Post Secret Project
admits being obsessed with secrets since his
childhood. “Most of my secrets I kept from
my mom.” He admits, thought that’s not what
really drove the Post Secret Project.
Several years before, Frank’s friend David
had committed suicide. “In the time that
I’ve been talking,” Frank says, less than an

been murdered. But four have committed

Kataifi (Shredded Wheat Rolls)
This little tightly-rolled pastry originates
from the Mediterranean area of the world.
The common connotation of Kataifi is
associated from the Grecian shops where
you can find them filled with nuts and sugar
served as desserts. This versatile dish can be
savory as well, as done in parts of Turkey
where you might see these shredded filled
bites made with ground meats and spices.
If you can’t find the Kataifi dough, the
replacement is quite simple with standard
filo dough. Once the roll is thawed, slice
thin ribbons from one end to the other.
Always remember when playing with filo
dough to keep it covered with a lightly
damp towel so it won’t dry out!
As previously stated, the innards of this
delicious delectable can be varied both on the
sweet and the savory side. Pistachios make
a wonderful replacement for the walnuts if
you’re watching your budget as well as add

alter the glazing syrup by adding artificial

• Preheat oven to 350°F
degrees.
• Brush lipped half cookie pan
with melted butter and set
aside.
• Combine nuts, sugar, and
cinnamon; mix well.
• Beat egg with cream and three
tablespoons of melted butter
then add to nut and spice
mixture.
• To prepare shredded wheat
rolls, spread out a handful
of the pastry to about 6 inch
long. Brush gently with
butter, place a tablespoon of
nut filling on bottom, and
roll up tightly, incorporating
the loose ends inward as you
go. Place seam side down on
buttered pan, and repeat with
remaining pastry and filling.

Mussels
in Thai Coconut Broth
For those that have never cooked with mussels before, they are inexpensive,
quick to prepare, and have the ability to be paired with a plethora of
different flavors. When you purchase your mussels, take a few out of your
bag and give them a gentle squeeze shut. Now watch; if they close on their
own, they’re still living and safe to eat, if not they still might be good, but
you won’t see until after they’re finished cooking. Throw away mussels
that are chipped or cracked where the inside of the mussel is exposed.
Most mussels have a little brown bundle of threads clamped in between
their shells to help them grab onto a surface underwater, this is known as
the “beard” and it is inedible. “De-bearding” is grabbing a hold of those
threads and pulling them off. After your mussels are cooked, if there are
any that are still closed, throw them away! Don’t try and force them open,
they’re not safe to eat. Serves: 4

schedules burdened with blockbuster film
shoots, magazine modelling photo sessions,
self-promotional interviews and, of course,
parties until the wee hours, Hollywood’s top
celebs still seem to find the time to cook for
their families. What’s more, they’re using their
abundant culinary prowess and wealth of home-
cooking know-how to produce cookbooks for
the average joe – how thoughtful!
The American public has warmly welcomed the
idea of the celebrity chef for the past 18 years,
mostly due to the success of Reese Schonfeld
(co-founder of CNN) and his pet project,
the Food Network. Even before the inception
of this enigma of the early 1990’s, chef such
as Julia Child, Wolfgang Puck, and The
Galloping Gourmet

The Art Institute of Seattle has been getting a facelift,
one wall at a time. “The bare walls have been a
problem for some time, and finally we’re able to do
something about it.” says Charles Duval, Ai Seattle
student and one of the designers on this project. Last
summer The Art Institute of Seattle created a unique
opportunity for the students: a chance to leave more
than just handprints on the walls of the school.
“I hope that this project can be a catalyst inspiring
others to share their voice, bringing more life to the
walls of Ai Seattle’s Campus.” says Eddy Lee, who
works in Admissions at The Art Institute of Seattle
and was also a designer on the stairwell project.

“My contribution to the mural was strongly
influenced by the need to create an environment,
a place where the viewer could submerge themselves
in a different existence.” says Rhadora Jacob,
Ai Seattle student and another designer
on the project.
“We didn’t have a set idea; Eddy wanted me to
be myself through my paintings.” says Rhadora.
“By doing just that I found a story and just went
with it.” The result was a strong, vibrant, colorful
and delightfully odd experience in design.
From the top of the stairs, students begin a wet
and wild ride down where strange aliens, traffic
cones and adorable creatures with large eyes guard
over the stairwell. The collaboration of three
individual artists in one design brought a variety
of styles into one cohesive piece.
Students at The Art Institute of Seattle have had the
opportunity to watch a mural of this scale through every
stage; many have left their notes of encouragement on
the stairway chalkboard throughout the months.
All of the time, passion, energy and effort has
been worth it, for in the end the mural has
accomplished the goal of it’s creators: bringing
color and life to a dark and dreary place.

Musings on What Comes Next
Lately I’ve been feeling a little itchy about
school - restless, bored, irritated - fill in the
blank and I’ve probably had those thoughts
about it. I start my 6th quarter Monday, in
what is supposed to be a 3-year program - less
than that for me because of transfer credits.
So, I’m probably about half way through my
program, give or take a few classes. I’m very
close to achieving my goal of a second career
(Okay, fine...I’ve been around the block a time
or two, but this is my second degree).
Yes, I am scared of what awaits me at the end
of this journey, and boy has it been a long one.
It might be two or so years of education, but
I’ve struggled for nearly twenty years to figure

out what I want to be when I grow up. Now
it’s finally (almost) here and I don’t know what
to do with myself. What will I do once I’m no
longer searching? I will have to prove myself
now that I have claimed, “this is what I want
to do.” Gulp. Maybe I should have just kept
my big mouth shut.
I know...I know.
Halfway
There
I breezed through the first five quarters. Sure,
there were struggles and I complained (a lot),
but I am proud to say I have a “perfect” (I really
hate that word) record of straight A’s thus far.
Or am I? I have always been overly competitive,
mainly with myself. I can’t help it. And please
believe me, I do not enjoy it. I am a perfectionist
and it drives me nuts. I find myself wishing I
could just let go and be “good enough” while
still enjoying other activities.
I start every quarter with the same intention:
go to the gym regularly, eat right, participate in
activities outside school - stay balanced. I hang
on until midterm and then all hell breaks loose.
My drive for perfection at school causes me
to lose all control and perspective in all other
aspects of my life. I seem to be able to focus on
school only and my head is down, with blinders
on, until I can ultimately proclaim another
quarter is over and I am that much closer to
graduation. And guess what? I’m excited about
those grades for about a day and then I start
telling myself I didn’t really earn them and that
I could have worked harder.
But I’m still terrified. The foundational courses
are behind me and now it’s time to prove
myself in the studio classes. I have to show my
instructors what I can do and I feel stuck in the
mud. What if I fail? I always thought I had a
flair for this...until I started school. We spend
so much time learning what we are supposed
to know that we lose sight of what made us
passionate about design in the first place.
Now because I know things like color theory,
I wonder if my color choices, which were
always at a gut level before, are good. I always

I was at a bookstore one night and I found “365: A Daily Creativity Journal”. I read about all
these creative people and the projects they did through a year and I decided I wanted to do

before and I’d sure like her to come out and
play. In the meantime, I’ll start school on
Monday and hope the cycle doesn’t repeat itself.
