GO!

With Us Tonight

Those who are a part of GO! tonight will join in

projects that will help our congregation say
“We Care” to those in our congregation and city.
We will have the opportunity to work on some gifts
(hats and blankets) for those who are homeless.
There is a long list of names for us to visit.
Many are sick or can’t come to worship services,
but would love a friendly “hello”.
James reminds us that we should not only be
listening to the Word, but doing it also. (James 1:22-25)
Join us tonight as we GO! out to share the love of Christ.
There is much more to do, come join us tonight. C H U R C H O F C H R I S T

Our evening starts with a short devotional at 6 p.m. in room 101;

May 15, 2011
Then at 6:30 p.m. we will review the GO! projects before breaking
out on the individual projects.

Next Sunday evening, May 22, instead of meeting for GO!, we invite
you to join us for a fellowship dinner. We will meet in room 101
at 5:30 p.m. for a devotional and then go to the Family Life Center
for a fellowship meal to get better acquainted
with Jimmy and Jacqui Hurd.
We hope you can join us!

“Preaching on Preaching” This series is designed to begin a dialogue about preaching at Cordova.
John 1: 19-23
In general, what are your thoughts about the preaching at Cordova?
Part 1 – The Person of Preaching
(This is purposefully a very broad question.)
Most would consider the preacher to be the “person of preaching.”
However, the preacher’s function and task is to point to the true per-
son of preaching, Jesus Christ. This sermon looked at the role of John Sometimes in our personal lives, we may falsely believe that we are more than
the Baptist in an attempt to understand the real person of preaching who we truly are, thinking that we are “the Christ.” We might refer to this as having
and the preacher’s relationship to him. a “Christ complex.”

What are your impressions of John the Baptist as a man and as a How does a “Christ complex” reveal itself in life and in relationships?
preacher?

John 3:27-30 states,

Why do you think people mistook John for the Christ? 27 To this John replied, “A man can receive only what is given him from heaven.
28 You yourselves can testify that I said, ‘I am not the Christ but am sent ahead of
him.’ 29 The bride belongs to the bridegroom. The friend who attends the bride-

voice. That joy is mine, and it is now complete. 30 He must become greater; I must
become less.

Why do you think some people mistake preachers for “the Christ?”

What relationship does John describe himself as having with “the bridegroom?”

How is it that projecting “the Christ” image upon a preacher sets him
up for failure?
John mentions in John 3:30, “He must become greater; I must become less.” What
might this principle suggest in terms of your relationship with Jesus?

What is your understanding of the preacher’s role and function in the

church?

If preaching is to be about Jesus Christ, what in particular should be

preached?
