As Armadilhas da Tradução
O trabalho do tradutor passa por um caminho ladeado de armadilhas.
Até os melhores profissionais guardam a lembrança de algum tremendo contra-
senso que cometeram. São diversas as causas de tais erros.
Apesar de sua diversidade, a maioria provém, em última análise, da
5 nossa fé na existência autônoma das palavras e na convicção inconsciente de que
a cada palavra de uma língua necessariamente corresponde outra noutra língua
qualquer. Confirma essa ilusão o recurso constante aos dicionários, onde, por
motivos de comodidade prática, os vocábulos se acham em ordem alfabética,
soltos de contexto e seguidos de definição.
10 Como dissemos, a palavra existe apenas dentro da frase, e o seu
sentido depende dos demais elementos que entram na composição desta. Ainda
que dois vocábulos de duas línguas sejam definidos de maneira igual, os
enunciados de que eles podem fazer parte não são os mesmos, nem as conotações
que evocam serão iguais.
15 Isto é verdade mesmo no caso de palavras da mesma origem e de
forma suficientemente próxima para revelar o parentesco à primeira vista.
Assim o nosso vocábulo “cópia” existe em francês, italiano e inglês sob forma
quase igual, no sentido de “imitação”, “reprodução”. Mas copie em francês
designa, além disto, trabalho escrito de aluno, assim como manuscrito entregue à
20 tipografia de um jornal, acepções que faltam a copia em italiano e a copy em
inglês; em compensação estas duas palavras possuem o sentido de exemplar, que
falta em francês e português.

A desatenção do profissional pode multiplicar os homônimos: Erwin
Theodor Rosenthal recorda um tradutor inglês de Hermann Hesse que, apesar do
trema, confundia schon (já”) e schön (“belo”); eu mesmo me lembro de outro que
trocava Rede (“discurso”) com Reede (“enseada”).

O húngaro tem termos especiais para “ irmão mais velho” e “irmão
mais moço”, como para “irmã mais velha” e “irmã mais moça”. Nesse idioma há
termo especial para designar o “parentesco” existente entre o pai e o padrinho de
235 uma criança.
A tradução da holófrase em todos esses casos só é possível por meio de
circunlocuções extensas; quando o tradutor faz questão de ressaltar que no
original se trata de noção expressa por meio de uma palavra só, usará hífens.
Em sentido mais lato podemos chamar de holófrases palavras que
240 designam noções peculiares a uma civilização, sem correspondente nos demais
ambientes culturais. Disto seriam exemplos em alemão, Weltanschauung,
Gemütlichkeit e Kitsch; em francês, parvenu e savoir-faire; em inglês,
understatement; em norte-americano, know-how; em italiano, mafia e vendetta;
em castelhano, piropo; em português, saudade; em brasileiro, jeito e sertão –
245 palavras essas que, por mais que tentemos traduzi-las recorrendo a todos os
circunlóquios possíveis, chegamos à conclusão de só haver exprimido parte do seu
conteúdo complexo. Tais palavras em geral acabam impondo-se sob sua forma
original aos idiomas cultos, que, na impossibilidade de forjarem seus
equivalentes, as incorporam ao próprio vocabulário.
250 Estudiosos da teoria da tradução têm salientado muito as diferenças
de ambiente responsáveis pela ausência de determinadas noções e que
constituiriam obstáculos insuperáveis para o tradutor. Eugene A. Nida, diretor
da Sociedade da Bíblia, dá conta de algumas dessas dificuldades encontradas na
tradução das Escrituras. Nas línguas de certas tribos primitivas não há palavra
255 para “peixe”. Há ilhas em que os indígenas não têm uma noção equivalente a
“pai”. Muitos povos ignoram a neve; para eles “branco como a neve”, “branco de
neve” não têm significação.
Pelos mesmos motivos era difícil resolver a alusão à serpente bíblica
na versão para esquimós. Com efeito, estes semelhantes nossos nunca viram
260 uma cobra. Pensou-se em substituí-la por foca; mas esse, para o esquimó, é um
animal essencialmente bom, camarada mesmo, e portanto seria impossível
imputar-lhe qualquer interferência maldosa. Roger Caillois, que citou o caso, não
diz a solução a que se chegou.
(Diga-se de passagem que a existência ou não de certas palavras em
265 determinadas línguas já foi tomada como base de caracterologias nacionais.
Partindo-se da idéia de Humboldt de que a diversidade das línguas é explicável
pela divergência das visões do mundo, chegou-se a inferir que em turco faltavam
palavras para “interessante” e “interessar-se” devido à falta de curiosidade dos
turcos, convencidos de que o Alcorão contém tudo que um homem precisava
270 saber; que nas línguas do Congo não existe palavra para dizer “obrigado” em face
da extrema miséria reinante na região, onde, por isso, ninguém pode privar-se de
coisa alguma nem prestar qualquer serviço; e, até, que os franceses não gostam
de viver em casa por não terem palavra equivalente ao inglês home.)

280 Assim, por exemplo, não pode haver a menor dúvida sobre o sentido da
palavra setembro, nono mês do ano. Entretanto a famosa poesia “Fim de
Setembro”, de Sándor Petöfi, uma das mais belas da língua húngara, deixa idéia
confusa no espírito do leitor brasileiro, porque as imagens de natureza
agonizante, folhas murchas e cumes cobertos de neve não se coadunam com o
285 título.
Na mesma ordem de idéias, as noções suscitadas pela palavra inverno
na mente de um carioca em nada se assemelharão às que provoca seu espírito
equivalente russo zimá no espírito de um habitante de Leningrado. Tampouco a
idéia de Natal expressa por outro equivalente qualquer coisa em comum no
290 Brasil e na Suécia.
Pelo mesmo motivo, as palavras breakfast e petit-déjeuner, que
figuram como equivalentes no dicionário inglês-francês, referem-se a duas
refeições essencialmente diversas; pão, pain, Brot, bread designam produtos
semelhantes, mas não idênticos; e o café, como o bebemos no Brasil, não é a
295 mistura indefinível que se ingurgita em Nova York. Pobre designa nos Estados
Unidos uma pessoa que tem automóvel e recebe, a título de welfare, indenização
equivalente ao salário de um professor universitário em certos Estados da
América do Sul.
Poder-se-iam multiplicar ad infinitum os exemplos de conotação
300 dessemelhante, quase nunca registrada nos dicionários bilíngues. Segundo um
léxico francês-português empire é equivalente perfeito de império; entretanto eles
suscitarão associações totalmente diversas no espírito de um francês e de um
brasileiro.
Sem o conhecimento da CONOTAÇÃO entende-se menos a origem de
305 muitas expressões figuradas: assim pour des prunes (“por um nada”, “a troco de
banana”) só é motivada para quem sabe que a ameixa é na França fruta das
mais corriqueiras e baratas – tal como a banana e o abacaxi entre nós ganharam
conotação depreciativa em seus empregos figurados.
Numa palavra, devido à dessemelhança das condições de vida é
310 impossível que qualquer tradução dê a mesma impressão do original. Pois é
precisamente esse argumento irrespondível que salienta uma das mais
importantes razões de ser da tradução: permitir às pessoas formular idéia sobre
a maneira de viver e de sentir das que vivem noutras partes do mundo.

Os textos abaixo são do livro PCWorld Excel 4.0 para Windows, de John
Walkenbach e David Maguiness, traduzido por Luiz Fernando Barreto Silva,
Tradutor de Informática. Todas os trechos contêm erros de tradução. Você
consegue identificá-los?
1. Os químicos usam-nas. Companhias de comidas para bebês vendem-nas.
Drinques leves possuem fórmulas secretas. Planilhas possuem fórmulas
também.
2. Por exemplo, suponha que você prepare um relatório mensal de vendas atuais
vs. vendas planejadas. Você tem uma planilha do Excel montada com as
quantidades planejadas por produto mas tem que esperar até o fim do mês
para entrar com as vendas atuais.
3. Se você planeja apresentar gráficos embutidos em planilhas, é uma boa idéia
trabalhar com gráficos no seu tamanho atual.
4. Mas esse é apenas o primeiro passo - a dica do iceberg com considerações sobre
as capacidades gráficas do Excel.
5. Opções de comando em um menu suspenso com elipses (três períodos) após
produzir um quadro de diálogo se você seleciona este comando. Desde quadros
de diálogos estejam predominantes no Excel, é útil a você por enquanto
entender como trabalhar com eles eficientemente.
6. Note que o ponteiro do mouse está na forma de um magnífico copo. Isto
informa que você pode clicar em qualquer lugar na produção prevista para
alargar o que você está vendo.

Então, me dei conta de que ele já tinha outro programa.
Tomei então a decisão de ir ao tode. Até chegar na clamba, tudo bem.
Estacionei o zulpinho, pus a chave no bolso e desci correndo para aproveitar ao chinto
aquele sol gostose e o mar pli sulapente.
Não parecia haver glapo na clamba. Tirei as gripes, pus a bangoula. Estava pli
quieto ali que até me saltipou. Mas, esqueci logo das saltipações no prazer de ficar ali,
inclusive tirei a bangoula para ficar mais à vontade. Não sei quanto tempo fiquei
nadando, siltando e corristando.
Foi na hora de voltar da clamba que me dei conta de que nem as gripes e nem a
bagoula estavam mais onde eu tinha deixado.

Diferentemente de skimming, scanning refere-se à busca de informações precisas
sobre um ponto específico. Por exemplo, se você quer ver o resultado do jogo
Atlético x São Paulo no jornal da segunda-feira, não precisa ler todo o artigo sobre o
jogo, mas somente a caixinha onde se encontra as informações básicas do jogo. O
leitor faz uso de scanning portanto, quando sabe qual informação procura e
simplesmente passa os olhos pelo texto procurando por esta informação e pronto.
No caso do jogo, ele não vai descobrir se foi um bom jogo, como foi a atuação do
juiz, quem foi expulso ou quem marcou os gols. Tudo o que o leitor conseguiu retirar
do texto foi Atlético 5 x 0 São Paulo.
