Mayor Jeffrey Lamarand to face second recall attempt

TAYLOR – This past Wednesday, May 11, 2011, the Wayne County Election
Commission determined one of the three versions of recall language submitted by
Charles Johnson, a city employee, to be of sufficient clarity.

The Election Commission does not confirm the accuracy of submitted language, but
instead makes its ruling based on the clarity of the language.

Mayor Lamarand, who was elected in November 2009, is less than half way through his
first term and is already facing a second attempt for his recall. Lamarand also served for
one term as a City Councilman before being elected Mayor.

“I was elected to do a job, unfortunately there are a few people (like Charlie Johnson)
that don’t care about the taxpayer, they only care about themselves,” stated Mayor
Lamarand. “The City of Taylor is in a very difficult financial position, left to us by a
combination of poor decision-making, escalating costs, and an extremely tough economy.
I have to make decisions that impact many people, but I make these decisions for the
60,000 residents of Taylor.”

Johnson, a Taylor resident, ran on the Priebe team for a council seat in 2005, but was
unsuccessful. Cameron Priebe, who had previously held the office of Mayor for 16
years, served again as Mayor from 2005-2009, before being defeated by Lamarand. In
2006, a master plumber position was created for Johnson by the Priebe administration in
the Building & Grounds area as a member of the AFSCME local 1128 group. That job
was eliminated in the 2010-2011 budget due to lack of specific work to sustain the
position. Johnson was able to exercise contractual rights and bump into another position
within the 1128 group, but with the July 1 budget Johnson faces lay-off due to his low
seniority.

The language approved by the Election Commission states, “On April 20, 2011 Mayor
Lamarand terminated the employment of nine Taylor police officers.”

“What’s disturbing, Mr. Johnson threw three erroneous claims against the wall and hoped
one of them would stick, and one did,” Lamarand added, “of course none of them were
accurate, or true.” According to Mayor Lamarand, on April 20 nine officers were
notified that effective May 1, 2011 they would be laid-off.

“Not one police officer was terminated, each of these officers retains rights to be called
back, and we are hopeful to get them back to work, soon,” continued Lamarand. “This
isn’t fair to the taxpayer here in Taylor. We’ve been working to clean-up a wide variety
of messes left to us; Taylor’s financial woes are 30 years in the making. When I was
elected Mayor there were no more free rides on the gravy train, now they are trying
anything; they want to take back Taylor and put it into the hands of those that have been
robbing it blind for 30 years.”
