To qualify for the Bachelor of Business from OUA, you must complete 24 units including one
prescribed major from either Economics, Information and Business Systems, Marketing or Tourism
Management (12 units) and 12 elective units.

Elective Units
When completing a prescribed major (i.e.
Economics, Information and Business Systems,
Marketing, or Tourism Management), you
must select 12 elective units from any OUA
undergraduate units.
In line with Swinburne’s Careers in the
Curriculum initiative, students who have
limited work experience are recommended to
undertake the unit SSK15 Careers and Work
provided by Macquarie University as one of their
electives.
Recommended Study Pattern
To get the most out of your course, it is
recommended that you should start by
selecting a major and completing the 12 units
within the major before finishing the course by
studying your 12 elective units.
Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL)
You may apply for credit (or RPL) towards
the degree for previous studies successfully
completed at other institutions up to a
maximum of 16 units. Please note that credit
cannot be given for studies completed more
than 10 years ago.
Procedures for Gaining the Award
You should register with Swinburne University
of Technology for the degree by completing
a Degree Registration form and paying the
required fee, in order to receive advice on
credit, unit selection and degree information.
The non-refundable $200 fee is payable when
the form is submitted during the first year of
study.

Academic
How does studying through OUA work?
Studying through OUA works differently to the
traditional university experience, and at the start, it
can seem confusing.
Basically, OUA offers access to a range of units that
are taught by their shareholder universities and
other academic providers. These units can be studied
individually, whenever offered or set combinations of
units can be completed to meet the requirements for
degrees. You can study as many units as you need,
and are not limited to a specific university or faculty.
You can study continuously, or in any of the study
periods that suit you best.
OUA handles enrolments and administration. The
universities look after learning materials and
assessment. If you decide to complete a degree,
you will graduate from the university offering that
program, for example Monash or Griffith. Your degree
will not say Open Universities Australia.
Do I have to go to classes?
No. There are no on-campus requirements for most
OUA students. You can choose the most convenient
times to study.
Selected programs do have an on-campus
component so please check the course requirements
carefully. Everything you need to complete your unit
will be included with your study materials.
When will I get my study materials?
The universities generally send out print study
materials the week before or during the first week
of study period. Email instructions on how to login to
your online materials are sent out around the same
time, but you may not be given access until after the
study period has started.
If you haven’t received your materials or login
instructions on the first day, don’t panic - especially
if you have received your confirmation of enrolment
letter. Try to get a head start by logging in to this
website and using the discussion forum to find other
students who can give you advice on what areas of
your textbooks to focus on.
I haven’t studied for a while, where should I start?
The most important thing is to start slowly, and it is
recommended that you should take one unit in your
first study period. This will give you the opportunity to
get into a good study routine without the pressure of
multiple due-dates.
For people who like a planned pathway, OUA’s
UniPrep and BizPrep programs give you a great
introduction to university study that includes access
to five Quick Skills modules as well as units that can
be credited toward a degree. Both programs run over
consecutive study periods.
How long does it take to finish a degree?
With OUA you can study at your own pace and even
finish sooner than traditional study methods. At most
you have 10 years to complete your degree. However
it’s important to remember that you need to spend
around ten hours each week on every undergraduate
unit you study, so taking on extra units to finish
ahead of time may not be your best option.
Can I do more than one degree at once?
In some cases, units may be used toward more than
one degree. Check qualification descriptions to see
where there is an overlap. We do not recommend
increasing your study load in order to complete an
additional degree.
Can I get credit for other study?
Yes. Credit transfer and recognition of prior
learning (RPL) are assessed on an individual basis.
Undergraduate and postgraduate students wishing to
have previous study credited towards a qualification
using OUA studies need to speak to their degree
coordinator. Contact details for each co-ordinator
appears at the bottom of the qualification outline.
Current university students who want to credit OUA
units towards another qualification should seek
written approval from their home university. We do not
need a copy - it is to make sure you gain appropriate
credit. Please make sure you have written approval
before you register with us - we do not give refunds
(beyond standard policy) if you find out you can’t get
credit for a unit you have already registered in.
Vocational Education and Training students
who believe they are eligible for Recognition
of Prior Learning (RPL) should contact their
Course Coordinator. RPL evaluates the skills and
competencies you have gained through education,
work and life experience. There are a range of
products available to help you prepare a RPL
portfolio, and some providers include a RPL service.
What’s a unit?
Units are subjects offered at undergraduate,
postgraduate and vocational levels. Undergraduate, and
most postgraduate, units last for 13 weeks plus exams,
and are offered in study periods. Vocational units are
offered on a continuous basis, and differ in their duration.
An undergraduate degree is built from 24 units.

What is a Unit Profile? How do I get one?
A unit profile provides important information about
a unit, such as its title, code, learning outcomes,
prerequisites and special requirements. There is also
an overview of the unit and the topics covered.
OUA unit profiles are official documents and can
assist students in gaining credit and recognition of
prior learning. Unit profiles can be obtained via the
OUA website by clicking on the link at the top of a
unit description page. If you have completed a unit
and need to show the profile to another education
institution, click the unit code link on your Completed
Units Page. You must be logged in to access this page.
How many units can I enrol for at once?
There are two options for enrolling - you can enrol
in units for a single study period, or you can enrol in
advance for any of the study periods remaining in a year.
You can enrol in a maximum of four units in any given
study period, however we recommend that you start
with only one or two units in your first study period.
Will I have to do exams?
Exams are a part of many units, and with a bit of
planning and preparation, you can go into your
exam relaxed and confident. Don’t leave your exam
preparation until the last minute - you won’t do your
best if you stay up cramming the night before. Your
study materials will guide you on which aspects of
the unit to concentrate on. Look for Unit, Topic and
Lesson outcomes and use them as a starting point
for preparation.
What’s an invigilator?
An invigilator is an exam supervisor. Your invigilator
is responsible for making sure you sit the exam in
university conditions. If you are required to arrange
an invigilator, forms will be supplied by the university
with your study materials. Commercial services
are available, however you may choose to find
an invigilator elsewhere, for example a librarian,
teacher, police officer or minister of religion. Once
you have nominated an invigilator, they will be sent
everything needed to conduct the exam.
Students studying outside Australia may have
different arrangements concerning invigilation.
Please read information from the university carefully.
In China, students studying through universities who
do not nominate a designated examination centre
for their region must sit their examinations at the
nearest British Council Office. In India, students
studying through universities who do not nominate
a designated examination centre for their region,
must sit their examinations at the nearest IDP Office.

When will I get my results?
Results are generally available six weeks after the
end of study period. To check if OUA have received
your results, simply login to the My Area section of
the website.
Your results may be available via your university
website. However, some universities also provide
written notification.
How do I get an academic transcript?
If you need a copy of your results, you have the option
of requesting either an academic transcript or a
statement of academic achievement. The academic
transcript contains a complete list of results for
every unit you have attempted, including failed
and withdrawn units. The statement of academic
achievement lists results for units you have
successfully completed. If you apply for a university
place through a tertiary admission centre, we will
supply your transcript automatically. Requests for
either report should be made to OUA.
Is there a graduation ceremony?
Students who complete the requirements for a
degree are able to graduate with other students
at their awarding university. Each university has
different procedures concerning graduation.
However, the first step for Open Universities
students is to notify their university that they intend
to complete a degree. For more information, contact
the degree coordinator listed at the bottom of your
chosen qualification outline.
What is OUA doing about Graduate Attributes?
Graduate Attributes describes the qualities or
characteristics that graduates of undergraduate
programs are expected to acquire as a result of
their study, and as such are the responsibility of the
academic providers and award granting institutions

Since 1998, all Australian universities have been
required to specify their generic graduate attributes
in Quality Assurance and Improvement Plans, which
are submitted to the Department of Employment,
Education, and Workplace Relations (DEEWR) as
part of the annual reporting to DEEWR. Australian
universities are now working towards embedding
their lists of graduate attributes into the curricula
and developing strategies and systems for assessing
and recording outcomes. They are doing this by
auditing or mapping of the curriculum to determine
where graduate attributes are currently addressed or
developed within a particular course. The University
of South Australia is recognised as a leader in
working since 1995 to integrate their seven graduate
attributes within quality assurance and improvement
processes.
Can I defer my study?
No.
Does OUA offer short courses?
No, although most of OUA’s undergraduate units
may be studied individually as short courses. The
exceptions are Nursing and most of the units in the
Bachelor of Education, as both are only available
to students who have been approved to complete
the entire program. Postgraduate programs are
restricted and have an application process.
General
Am I eligible for a Student Travel Concession card?
As OUA is an off-campus study provider, most state
public transport authorities will not issue you with a
student travel concession card.
Can I study overseas?
You can study from anywhere around the world.
There are no additional charges for Australian or
New Zealand citizens or permanent visa holders
living outside Australia.
Students who are not Australian citizens, permanent
residents of Australia or New Zealand citizens must pay
an additional Overseas Student Fee of $195 per unit.
Can I transfer from OUA to an on-campus place?
Direct transfer is not available - you will need to apply
through the relevant Tertiary Admissions Centre.
Successful completion of units offered through OUA
will improve your chances of receiving an offer from
your preferred university. Check with the university to
see which units are most appropriate. Arrangements
for international students may differ. Please email
international@open.edu.au for further information.
Do I get a student card?
All OUA students will receive a student card. It
carries your name and OUA ID number. You should
receive your student card in week five of the study
period you have enrolled in. Your card is valid until
March of the following year.
Why student cards don’t include photos?
Because OUA students are located all over Australia
(and internationally), a photo verification system to
include photos on OUA student cards would prolong
the production process and mean students would
have to wait even longer for their cards.
Why don’t the student cards mention fulltime or part-
time study?
Because the OUA enrolment approach allows
students to choose how much study they want to
do in each study period, we cannot state whether a
student is part-time or full-time on the card as this
may change throughout the year.
How do I get a replacement student card?
If you lose your student card and need a replacement,
please contact Student Advisors on 1300 36 36 52.
There is a replacement fee of $20 to cover costs for
generating a new card.
How do I meet other students?
Online discussion groups are a convenient way to discuss
your study-related thoughts with your classmates. There
are a range of general and more focused discussion
areas to choose from. Online discussion is only available
to past and present students.
How do I update my personal details?
To change your Name, Citizenship or Date of Birth,
you must fax or mail the changes directly to OUA,
clearly stating your current details and what you
would like them change to, along with your full name,
OUA ID, and any supporting documents. Appropriate
documents include a marriage certificate, passport,
change of name certificate, birth certificate and
citizenship certificate. Please note, a driver’s license
and/or Medicare card is not sufficient.

Will all of my classes be online?
There are no scheduled classes for most units
offered through OUA}However, many units are taught
using extensive online resources. If you are studying
an online unit, your university will provide login and
password details around the start of study period.
How do I enrol?
Unlike other university courses, most of our
undergraduate units are open to all students. You don’t
submit an application then wait to find out if you’ve been
accepted. Instead, you enrol in the units that fit your needs
then get started as soon as your study materials arrive.
However, Postgraduate units are different. They are
restricted and require interested students to follow
an application process for entry. Further information
about application processes and forms is available on
each program page.

Costs and Financial Assistance
What is FEE-HELP?
FEE-HELP is a loan scheme that assists eligible
students to pay their unit fees. FEE-HELP can cover
all or part of a student’s unit fees. The FEE-HELP
limit is indexed each year.
If you are eligible to use FEE-HELP, the Government
will pay the amount of your loan directly to OUYou
then repay your loan through the tax system once
your income is above the minimum threshold for
compulsory repayment. For more information on the

results?
Yes, as long as you maintain a 50% pass rate after

Can I have a HECS-HELP debt and a FEE-HELP debt?
In some case you may have both debts. For more

Can I use FEE-HELP and upfront payment at the
same time?
Yes, you can choose to defer all, 25%, 50% or 75% of
your fees using FEE-HELP.
Do I get a bonus for making extra repayments?
Yes, if you make a voluntary payment above your
required payment for the year, you will receive a 10%

Do I need a Tax File Number (TFN) to access FEE-
HELP?
Yes.You will need to have a Tax File number to access
FEE-HELP. You will need to give either your TFN or
a copy of your Certificate of Application for a TFN to
Open Universities Australia (OUA) before the census
date for the relevant units.
If you are eligible for FEE-HELP and wish to apply
online, you will need to provide your Tax File Number.
Does studying through OUA affect my Student
Learning Entitlement (SLE)?
No. If you’re an Australian or New Zealand citizen,
or the holder of a permanent visa, your SL) gives you
access to seven years equivalent full-time study in a
Commonwealth supported place.
OUA does not offer any Commonwealth supported
places, and therefore you don’t lose any of your SLE
when you study with OUThis is regardless of whether
you pay your fees upfront or using FEE-HELP. Your
FEE-HELP balance and SLE are not connected.
How can I check my FEE-HELP balance?
You can check your FEE-HELP balance online by logging
to the myUniAssist area of the Going to Uni website. For

How do I apply for FEE-HELP?
If you are eligible for FEE-HELP you can apply
online as part of your enrolment or you can contact
your SEEK Learning consultant on 1800 89 10 11 to
request a FEE-HELP information pack.
How do I get a Certificate of Application for a TFN?
The Australian Tax Office does not issue Certificates
of Application for TFN by mail. Students requiring a
Certificate of Application must go in person to an ATO
Shopfronts, which are situated in main cities. The

How many units can I use FEE-HELP for each year?
There are no limits on how many units you can study
in a year. However, if you have completed eight units,
regardless of payment method, you must maintain a
50% pass rate to remain eligible for FEE-HELP.
How many units do I have to study each study period
to access FEE-HELP?
There are no study load requirements to access FEE-

Is there a limit to how much FEE-HELP I can access?
Yes. The loan amount is indexed at the start of

What are the fees for international students?
The cost of your degree will vary depending on the
discipline you are studying. Payment is on a unit-by-
unit basis and you enrolment cannot be processed
until payment is received. Students who are not
Australian citizens, permanent residents of Australia
or New Zealand citizens must pay an additional
Overseas Student Fee of $195 per unit.
What types of units are covered by FEE-HELP?
FEE-HELP is available for undergraduate,
postgraduate and enabling units.
Will I have to pay a loan fee?
No. There is no loan fee for units taken through OUBy
enrolling in units (rather than a full degree) there is
no 20% load fee.
Is my study through OUA tax deductible?
It may be. Self-education costs are tax deductible
if they are likely to result in wage increases in your
current employment. For more information, visit
www.ato.gov.au or speak to an accountant.

How do I access my online learning materials?
Online learning materials are accessed through
your university website. You will receive login and
password details before or during the first week of
the study period. Login, click “Yes” to indicate that
you are a student, then fill in the form.
How do I get to the online discussion area?
Online discussion is only available to students or past
students who have a login to this website.
What kind of resources do I need to study online?
You’ll need regular access to the Internet
and an email address which will be used for
correspondence. For a smooth learning experience,
we recommend the following minimum computer
specifications:
