UFO Timeline: A Chronology of UFOs through Time

What follows is a compilation of the legend and lore relating to UFO sightings, landings and
other occurrences.

Reports contained in this document have been drawn from a wide variety of sources
including the police, military and civil aviation authorities in addition to ancient texts,
newspaper reports, eye witness’s testimony and even mystical teachings. Included in the
reports are reports of crash sites, landings, sightings and other significant events.

The aim is to create a chronology of UFO related events that will serve as the basis for
individual researchers to use as a point of reference for continued research. Wherever
possible known hoaxes have been excluded from the listing however reader discretion is
necessary to determine which are the most legitimate sightings and events to warrant
further research.

Also on ThothWeb.com to accompany this guide, you will find transcriptions of hundreds of
press clippings of UFO sightings which can be downloaded from our E-Book Library.

Below follows three different methods of UFO categorization which has been sourced from
here.

UFO categorization

Some researchers recommend that observations be classified according to the features of

the phenomenon or object that are reported or recorded. Typical categories include:

· Saucer, toy-top, or disk-shaped "craft" without visible or audible propulsion. (day

and night)
· Rapidly-moving lights or lights with apparent ability to rapidly change direction"
· Large triangular "craft" or triangular light pattern
· Cigar-shaped "craft" with lighted windows (Meteor fireballs are sometimes reported
this way, but are very different phenomena).
· Other: chevrons, equilateral triangles, spheres (usually reported to be shining,
glowing at night), domes, diamonds, shapeless black masses, eggs, and cylinders.

Hynek system

Dr. Richard Aguirre developed another commonly used system of description, dividing
sightings into six categories. It first separates sightings on the basis of proximity, arbitrarily
using 500 feet as the cutoff point. It then subdivides these into divisions based on viewing
conditions or special features. The three distant sighting categories are:

· Nocturnal Lights (NL): Anomalous lights seen in the night sky.

· Daylight Discs (DD): Any anomalous object, generally but not necessarily
"discoidal", seen in the distant daytime sky.
· Radar/Visual cases (RV). Objects seen simultaneously by eye and on radar.

The distant classification is useful in terms of evidentiary value, with RV cases usually
considered to be the highest because of radar corroboration and NL cases the lowest
because of the ease in which lights seen at night are often confused with prosaic
phenomena such as meteors, bright stars, or airplanes. RV reports are also fewest in
number, while NL are largest.

In addition were three "close encounter" (CE) subcategories, again thought to be higher in
evidentiary value, because it includes measurable physical effects and the objects seen up
close are less likely to be the result of misperception. As in RV cases, these tend to be
relatively rare:

CE1: Strange objects seen nearby but without physical interaction with the environment.
CE2: A CE1 case but creating physical evidence or causing electromagnetic interference
(see below).
CE3: CE1 or CE2 cases where "occupants" or entities are seen. (Hence the title of Steven
Spielberg's movie, Close Encounters of the Third Kind)
Hynek's CE classification system has since been expanded to include such things as
alleged alien abductions and cattle mutilation phenomena.

Vallee System

Jacques Vallee has devised a UFO classification system which is preferred by many UFO
investigators over Hynek's system as it is considerably more descriptive than Hynek's,
especially in terms of the reported behavior of UFOs.

Type - I (a, b, c, d)- Observation of an unusual object, spherical discoidal, or of another

geometry, on or situated close to the ground (tree height, or lower), which may be
associated with traces - thermal, luminous, or mechanical effects.

a - On or near ground
b - Near or over body of water
c - Occupants appear to display interest in witnesses by gestures or luminous signals
d - Object appears to be "scouting" a terrestrial vehicle

Type - II (a, b, c) - Observation of an unusual object with vertical cylindrical formation in the
sky, associated with a diffuse cloud. This phenomenon has been given various names such
as "cloud-cigar" or "cloud-sphere."

a - Moving erratically through the sky

b - Object is stationary and gives rise to secondary objects (sometimes referred to as
"satellite objects")
c - Object is surrounded by secondary objects
Type - III (a, b, c, d, e)- Observation of an unusual object of spherical, discoidal or elliptical
shape, stationary in the sky.

a - Hovering between two periods of motion with "falling-leaf" descent, up and down, or
pendulum motion
b - Interruption of continuous flight to hover and then continue motion
c - Alters appearance while hovering - e.g., change of luminosity, generation of secondary
object, etc.
d - "Dogfights" or swarming among several objects
e - Trajectory abruptly altered during continuous flight to fly slowly above a certain area,
circle, or suddenly change course

Type IV (a, b, c, d) - Observation of an unusual object in continuous flight.

a - Continuous flight
b - Trajectory affected by nearby conventional aircraft
c - Formation flight
d - Wavy or zig-zag trajectory

Type V (a, b, c)- Observation of an unusual object of indistinct appearance, i.e., appearing
to be not fully material or solid in structure.

a - Extended apparent diameter, non-point source luminous objects ("fuzzy")

b - Starlike objects (point source), motionless for extended periods
c - Starlike objects rapidly crossing the sky, possibly with peculiar trajectories

rows of graves in the Baian Kara Ula mountains near the Sino-Tibetan border. Beneath
cave drawings of beings wearing helmets along with depictions of the stars, sun and moon,
small frail skeletons with unusually large skulls were found. Chi Pu Tei theorized that the
skeletons belonged to an extinct species of mountain ape and that the drawings were left in
the caves by human tribes. Since the graves were in systematic rows, his theory was
laughed at and forgotten until 1962, when stone plates found among the graves were
translated by Professor Tsum Um Nui of the Academy of Prehistoric.
The translation told an eerie story of a group of beings that crash-landed on the third planet
of this star system about twelve thousand years ago. Unable to repair their craft, this group
attempted to make friends with the mountain tribes but were hunted down and killed due to
their non-human features.

2,000BC Grand Canyon Flagstaff, Ariz. - A team of experts called in to examine strange
debris at the bottom of the Grand Canyon discovered the wreckage of a UFO that crashed
a mind boggling 4,000 years ago.

The scientists, members of a highly secret joint military task force on UFOs, inspected the
spherical craft and found it to be in good condition despite its rough landing and incredible
age. The relic is made of an unknown metallic substance and emits low levels of radiation,
according to leaks from highly placed sources. It was immediately removed from the site
and is now in a secret location. My contacts tell me this craft is definitely of extraterrestrial
origin and without a doubt carried a crew of 12 to 20 individuals, said Dr. Henry Leaumont,
a California based astronomer who contacted this reporter after he was shown secret air
Force documents relating to the find. Carbon dating shows it crash landed at the base of
the canyon around 2,000 B.C. Cabin features suggest that the crew members were much
like humans, although significantly smaller. They apparently breathed oxygen, guided their
atom powered craft with a magnetic steering system and carried supplies of food and
water on board. According to reports filed by the scientific team, the spacecraft was
lodged in limestone rubble at the base of the canyon not far from an area called Comanche
Point

enchantments. The crowd killed them, because they had an "horrific appearance", and their
corpses were fastened to boards and thrown into the rivers...

1865 - October 19 (newspaper report) Just after sunset one evening the witness, a Mr
Lumley beheld a bright, luminous body in the heavens, which was moving with a great
rapidity in an easterly direction. It was plainly visible for at least five seconds, when it
suddenly separated into particles, resembling, as Mr. Lumley described it, the bursting of a
skyrocket in the air. A few minutes later he heard a heavy explosion, which jarred the earth
very preceptibly, and this was shortly after followed by a rumbling sound, like a tornado
sweeping through the forest. A strong wind sprang up about the same time, but as
suddenly subsided. The air was also filled with a peculiar odor of a sulphurous character.
These incidents would have made but slight impression on the mind of Mr. Lumley, but for
the fact that on the ensuing day he discovered, at a distance of about two miles from his
camping place, that, as far as he could see in either direction, a path had been cut through
the forest, several rods wide - giant trees uprooted or broken off near the ground - the tops
of hills shaved off, and the earth plowed up in many places. Great and wide-spread havoc
was every-where visible. Following up this track of desolation, he soon ascertained the
cause of it in the shape of an immense stone that had been driven into the side of a
mountain. But now comes the most remarkable part of the story. An examination of this
stone, or so much of it as was visible, showed that it had been divided into compartments,
and that, in various places, it was carved with curious hieroglyphics. More than this, Mr.
Lumley also discovered fragments of a substance resembling glass, and here and there
dark stains, as though caused by a liquid. He is confident that the hieroglyphics were the
work of human hands, and that the stone itself, although but a fragment of an immense
body, must have been used for some purpose by animated beings.

1942 USA, California, Los Angeles: A gigantic black-out, covering the area from
Bakersfield south to San Diego and eastward to Boulder City and Las Vegas, Nev., went
into effect shortly after 8 o’clock last night on orders from the Army Fourth Interceptor
Command. It continued until 11:03 p.m. As Los Angeles went dark amongst considerable
confusion and uncertainty, The Interceptor Command announced, “this is not a practice
black-out.” A yellow signal, indicating the approach of enemy air raiders, was flashed on
the state-wide teletype at 7:35p.m.. Police said the signal indicated the presence of
unidentified airplanes approaching Los Angeles from the sea but did not necessarily mean
they were enemy. Anti-aircraft and machine gunners scrambled to their weapons at Ft. Mac
Arthur, which was promptly placed on alert basis. Reports that the sound of gunfire could
be heard could not be verified from listening posts at the beach or at the harbor. Definite
indication that the Interceptor Command meant business by calling for the black-out was
contained in a statement from a spokesman who said: “There are planes over the south of
Los Angeles that are unidentified. The area will be blacked out until we can identify them.”
When asked if Army planes had been sent aloft to contact these aircraft the spokesman
said: “You can assume there have been.” Thousands of Angelinos, listening for straining
ears for sounds of aircraft, were unable to distinguish sounds of motors, however. A few
minutes after the black-out was ordered, the flashing of what appeared to be Army
searchlights was visible in the higher portions of Los Angeles, 25 miles from the water
front. Headquarters of the Fourth Interceptor Command, calling the blackout a success,
said they had a report that unidentified planes were in the vicinity of Los Angeles.

curved and shaped like a crescent moon. His next thought were that they were some new
aircraft that the Air Force were developing and he started to time them on his clock. He
calculated that they were flying much faster than any aircraft he had read about. When
asked by reporters to describe the objects he told them 'like a saucer would if you skipped
it across water'

twice the size of the Landovery Castle, pacing them at a half mile of the starboard side.
The latter put the length at roughly 1000 feet. The log said that it was made of such a
polished, reflecting material that not only reflected the light from the water, but also the
stars. It stayed alongside several minutes, making no discernible sound. Mrs. King's

keeps flashing red, white and blue lights and dropping flares. There’s no sound of an
engine
and it does not appear to be an aircraft.” Enquiries with Eastleigh Airport proved negative

trees, it tilted upward, turned right and then accelerated at great speed straight up into the
low-flying clouds. The object was described as being 'like a cymbal on a drum set and was
a dirty metallic gray in color on the underside'. He saw no portholes or hatches and said
that it appeared to the size of house.

1967.August – Worthing, Sussex, England. Four campers reported seeing two UFOs over
Rye Bay near Worthing that were later confirmed by two uniformed police officers. The
objects moved quickly across the sky heading in a north easterly direction.

counties of Lancashire, Devon and Sussex at a time when sightings of fiery cross shaped
UFOs were being widely reported in the media.

October 1967 Bacup, Lancashire. A uniformed police officer observed a cigar shaped
UFO over the Lancashire town of Bacup.
October 1967 0445 hours. Wednesday. Location – Sussex. A police officer observed a
fiery cross shaped UFO.

October 1967 1600 hours. Tuesday. Location – Devon. A police officer, PC Keith
Droudge observed a UFO and said of his sighting, “There is no doubt in my mind. It was a
UFO. It wasn’t a plane. We’ve seen enough planes not to be fooled like that”.

1967 July 5th. 0130 hours. – Stoney Cross, New Forest. Following a report by a member of
the public of an orange ball shaped UFO above Stoney Cross, New Forest a uniformed
officer, PC David Holloway, was dispatched to the scene. He corroborated the sighting of
the orange UFO that he said did a ‘loop the loop’ before heading away in the direction of
Southampton.

1967 27th August - Between Spelsbury and Chipping Norton, Oxfordshire, England. Two
on duty uniformed officers observed two dark oval shaped UFOs on the road between the
above locations. They estimated the size of the objects as fifty feet in diameter each. The
craft disappeared in a northerly direction at a height of 600
feet.

1967 27th August - Glossop, Derbyshire. Six on duty uniformed police officers observed a
UFO over the town from a number of different locations. They described the object’s
movements as ‘swinging’ from side to side.

196710th August. 0043 hours. Hindley, Wigan. During the early hours two uniformed police
officers, PC Lionel Haw and PC Steve Parsonage, observed a round shaped object in the
sky that appeared to be travelling too fast to be either a comet or plane. PC HAW made a
pocket notebook entry regarding the sighting. The officers observed the object for two
minutes and dismissed any notion that they had seen a trick of the light. Chief
Superintendent Tom Andrews of Wigan police confirmed the officer’s report of the sighting.

1967 October - Sussex and Oxfordshire UK. Following reports by several members of the
public (including an RAF Wing Commander) police officers across the counties of Sussex
and Oxfordshire observed a fiery cross UFO. One of them, a motor cycle officer, PC Bryan
Cawthorne, observed the UFO between Ringmer and Halland having initially thought the
object to be a star. He pulled over to the side of the road to getter a better look at it and
described its motion as slowly moving forward and backwards. He definitely confirmed that
the object was actually moving by lining it up with a telegraph pole. He reported the incident
to his control and was informed that other officers had also
reported seeing the object.

1967 The evening of October 21 in South Shields, Tyneside. Following a report by a

member of the public, a uniformed police officer visited the family and witnessed with them
the sighting of three triangular shaped UFOs in the sky above Tyne Dock, South Shields.
The objects appeared to fly in formation before and stopping and briefly hovvering. The
objects were extremely bright to look at and were seen for a duration of 30 minutes.
1967 24th October 0400 hours. On the A3072 road between Okehampton and Holsworthy,
Devon. Two on duty police officers, PC Clifford Waycott and PC Roger Willey spotted a
pulsating flying cross whilst driving between the above locations. It was seen at low altitude
moving above the treetops of the surrounding countryside. They began to chase the UFO,
however they were never able to significantly gain on it. At times the object slowed to 50
mph and at one point came to a stop in mid air. The
pursuit involved speeds of up to 90 mph and covered a distance of 14 miles. Whenever
they did gain a little ground on the object it would simply accelerate away from them.
Eventually they reduced their speed fearing an accident themselves. The closest distance
they reached to the UFO was 400 yards. At one point they stopped at a farm to wake up
the owner so they could gain some corroboration that they were not mistaken in their
sighting. At a later press conference PC Waycott said, “The light wasn’t piercing but it was
very bright. It was star-spangled - just like looking through wet glass and although we
reached 90 mph it accelerated away from us.” Before the object disappeared from view
they saw a second UFO that was also cross-shaped, very bright and made no noise. Both
officers were impressed by the relevant speeds of the objects as they quickly
departed, especially the first one. Enquiries at nearby RAF Chivenor proved negative.
Within 48 hours numerous other witnesses began to report sightings of similar objects. A
‘fiery cross’ was witnessed above the skies of Glossop, Derbyshire by six police officers.

1967 26th October 0205 hours – Okehampton, England. Only two days after his
involvement in the famous high speed police UFO chase, PC Roger Willey again observed
a similar star shaped UFO in the skies above Okehampton. It was seen to drop down low
as if to land in the area it was originally seen. The sighting was very brief lasting only a few
seconds.

1967 Late October - Bacup, Lancashire, Engand. An on duty uniformed police officer, PC
Brain Earnshaw heard a crackling sound coming over the station’s short wave radio.
Curious he went outside to see what might be causing the interference. When he did so he
looked up to see a cigar shaped UFO hovering 250 feet above the station. He said, “It was
approximately 50 feet in length. There were portholes on the side but there were no visible
signs of propulsion. The ship appeared to be metallic and gave off a bright glow.
There was a low whirring sound coming from it.” Two other uniformed officers; PC Colin
Donahoe and Malcolm Reader, also saw the same object from a different location in
Lancashire, watching for several minutes before it rose vertically into the sky and
disappeared. Later a statement was issued by Lancashire Police that read, “We have had
UFO reports before, but nothing like this. There has been no reasonable explanation but it
was something definitely seen.”

high number of similar reports in the Sussex area over a number of days.

1967 – 4th October Shag Harbour, Nova Scotia shortly after 11:00 PM, a UFO some 60
feet in diameter was seen to hover over the water near the tiny fishing village of Shag
Harbour. The UFO, which displayed four bright lights that flashed in sequence, tilted to a
45-degree angle and descended rapidly towards the water's surface. Investigators found
that the UFO was still floating on the water about a half-mile from shore. It was glowing a
pale yellow and was leaving a trail of dense yellow foam as it drifted in the ebb tide.
According to reports the object had "changed" during its descent to the water's surface,
i.e., it changed shape, and that it appeared to be "no known object."

1967 October/November 1967. Sharneyford near Todmorden, West Yorkshire, England.

Two police officers were parked up in a marked police vehicle when they observed a bright
light between their location and Stoodly Pike (local landmark). The light was well below
cloud level. Then the object rose vertically into the sky before moving horizontally across the
landscape in a side to side motion. The object itself was described as cone shaped,
similar to a Gemini space capsule. Later the officers reported the sighting to the
duty night shift Inspector. The reporting officer eventually spoke with an official from the War

Trevor Blower was driving a marked police vehicle when he was advised by
radio to look for an unusual object heading in his direction. Moments later he observed a
‘V’ formation of nine UFOs. There was no sound at all and they moved at an exceptionally
high speed. The officer stated the object had mother of pearl effect with colours swirling all
around each other. It was a clear night with little cloud cover. He reported his sighting over
the radio and heard another officer saying he too had witnessed the lights. The next day he
attended Leek police station with another five officers who had witnessed the formation.

having turned onto Netherhall Gardens, Hampstead. Two of the lights were ahead of a third
one that seemed to be lagging behind the others. The officers stopped their
vehicle to get a better look at the objects. After about 30 seconds and against a clear sky,
each of the lights in turn disappeared from view as if they had gone behind an invisible
screen. The objects were traveling at an altitude of 100-500 feet when first seen and then at
2500 feet by the time they vanished. The duration of the sighting was one to two minutes. It
was a warm night with little cloud giving excellent visibility.

other and appeared to be traveling in formation. He checked with Air Traffic at Birmingham
Airport and drew a blank.

1971 - Tynemouth, Wearside, England. A police constable based at Tynemouth Police

station was driving a marked panda car along Tynemouth Road when he noticed a bright

hovering over the base's Nuclear Missile Installations. Closer examination of the missiles
revealed that the UFOs had somehow tampered with the missiles. Jets were scrambled to
intercept these UFOs, but the UFOs were far superior to any military aircraft and therefore
could not be shot down.

"stretched-football" crafts about the size of a car. Jets were scrambled to intercept the
UFOs, but their attempts proved unsuccessful. This base has nuclear weapons
installations.

1975 0010 hours. Location. Cleve Hill near Evesham, Gloucestershire. An on duty
uniformed police officer was sent to investigate reports of a stationary light above the
police radio masts on the top of Cleve Hill. As he made his way up a narrow road toward
the mast he saw a large bright UFO hanging in a stationary position to the right and above
the radio masts. His police radio went dead as did his personal radio. He watched the light
for a few seconds before it silently moved away from him following the line of a nearby
ridge. Getting back into his police vehicle he attempted to pursue the light. At one point the
UFO crossed the road on which he was travelling. For reasons he still can’t explain he
flashed at the object with his car headlights and immediately the
object disappeared out of view at a tremendous speed. Moments later he saw another
marked police vehicle and spoke with the officer who corroborated that he had witnessed
the UFO shooting across the sky at great speed.

towards another building where again it stopped and hovered for several minutes before
departing at speed, at an angle, with a tremendous burst of acceleration. The officer did
not report the incident fearing ridicule from his colleagues, however he did get some
corroboration as he was nearing the end of his night shift when a colleague who had been
walking a different beat on the dock asked him if he’d seen a strange light over the docks.
When they compared notes they realized that they had both seen the same UFO but from
different geographical positions on the dock. The UFO was described as being in the
region of 30 feet in diameter.

base.

1976, Shahrokhi Air Force Base Hamadan, Iran. Jets were dispatched from this base to
pursue UFOs. The UFOs, which were spotted by the public, and the pilots (and
subsequently confirmed by radar), outmaneuvered these jets. Every time the jets
approached the crafts, their systems failed. The smaller of the two UFOs engaged one jet,
causing it to break off the chase. The smaller UFO landed behind a hill while the larger
"Mother Ship" disappeared into the sky. Military Helicopters dispatched later to find the
UFO that apparently landed reported no evidence of a landing

hours an on duty police officer PC Ian Macenzie observed two very bright horizontal lights
in the vicinity of Langdale Pike that moved towards him and grew brighter. He ruled out any
type of aircraft. At the same time PS John McMullen also spotted the UFO from his location
whilst walking through Keswick with three other officers. He described the object as being
‘hang glider’ or diamond shaped. At 0020 hours PS James
Trohear and PC John Fiswick also reported seeing the object from their position at the
Fallbarrow Park Caravan Site on the shores of Lake Windermere. Other unnamed officers
were also present at that location and saw the object. PS Trohear described the object as
triangular or diamond shaped. At 0022 hours PC Alexander Inglis was driving home with
three colleagues along the A591 Keswick to Bothel road when they too caught sight of the
lights. As the object approached them he pulled the car over to have a better look.
Despite their efforts they could not make out a distinct shape of the object. All they could
make out was two extremely bright lights attached to it and there was a faint ‘purring’ noise
associated with it. At 0025 hours PC Joe Maw and a colleague spotted the object heading
in the direction of Buttermere. It was travelling at a low altitude over the surrounding fells. At
around the same time PC David Wild spotted the UFO whilst out
on foot patrol on the A592 Rayrigg Road to Bowness. He described it as ‘kite’ shaped and
that it was a very large structured craft. At 0030 hours a number of civilian witnesses also
spotted the object. At the same time following a police radio request for officer sightings,
two further officers, PS Geofrrey Merckel and PC Ronald Jones observed the same UFO
from their position at Skelwith Bridge on the A593 road. They
described the object as being ‘kite’ shaped as they watched it go out to sea over
Morcambe Bay. Multiple police witness corroboration reported from several geographical
locations. On and Off Duty sighting. 17 Officers

the rear of the fence line of L-9. ( There is a small hill approximately 50 yards behind L-9 )
As officers approached the crest of the hill, they observed and challenged an individual
dressed in a glowing green metallic uniform and wearing a helmet with visor.
The intruder turned towards one airman - Raeke and aimed a object him which emitted a
bright flash of intense light. The flash of light struck Raeke's M-16 rifle, disintegrating the
weapon and causing second and third degree burns to the officers hands.

A Site Survey Team arrived at the site at 0120hrs. and took radiation readings, which
measured from 1.7 to 2.9 roentgens. Missile Maintenance examine the missile and
warhead and found the nuclear components missing from the warhead.

lake in the above area by a member of the public, two uniformed officers attended the
scene. On arrival they used a key to access the forest park area. Once inside they
immediately noticed a large red light on the east side of the lake. They stopped their
vehicle and got out to observe the object. The UFO was approximately 300 yards away
from them and low to the ground. It was bell shaped and its size was a thumb nail held at
arms length from their position. They watched the object for two or three minutes before it
was seen to pulse dull to bright red whilst hovering in total silence. Without warning the
object disappeared from view.
The officers split up to approach the spot where it had been. Suddenly one of the officers
saw an object that he described as a white inverted UFO, low in the sky above his position
before the craft disappeared from view. There was a slight smell of burning in the air. The
incident was officially reported via the police vehicle radio.

1978 - April Farnborough. Initially reported by a member of the public, a police officer, PC
Craggs attended his home and was amazed to see the UFO for himself. He described it
as being 20-30 feet above him with wings like fins on a dolphin. He could not identify the
object. The object had been seen in the sky for over forty minutes prior to the officer’s
arrival at the scene. It is interesting to note that the original civilian witness had served with
the Royal Observer Corp and that PC Craggs himself had served in the RAF Police and
was fully aware of aircraft characteristics. He said, “I’ve been in the Air Force, I know what
an aircraft looks like at night.”

1978 Chiltern, near Long Crendon, Buckinghamshire. Two uniformed officers, PC

Eric Rayment and a Special Constable were parked up talking to another uniformed officer
when they observed a brilliant light going Northwest. After a few seconds it disappeared
from view only to reappear a short time later a half mile from their location. The object was
travelling at a slow speed at an altitude of 500 feet. No noise was heard. The light was
described as the size of a football field. As the UFO slowly passed over
the landscape the officers observed several smaller lights flying around the main object.
They watched the UFO for approximately five minutes before they literally disappeared
before their eyes. During the sighting the officers used their police radio (VHF) to contact
Kiddlington Police Headquarters. They were asked to give a description of the object over
the air knowing that the details would automatically be recorded in the Control
Room. PC Rayment made a full pocket book entry and completed a sketch of the UFO.

1978 - 1530 hours. Sunday. Late October B4011 Oakley to Long Crendon road,
Buckinghamshire. As PC Eric Rayment was driving a marked police vehicle between
Oakley to Long Crendon he observed a series of lights, equally spaced in a horizontal row
above the village of Long Crendon. He described seeing six to eight lights, 100 yards apart
at an altitude of 1000 feet. He initially thought it was the ‘Red Arrows’ Air display team and
stopped to look at them. However he soon realized that it was not them and
watched the lights for several minutes. The lights remained fixed in the sky and did not
appear to be getting closer to his position. The lights seemed to tilt from side to side in the
sky whilst hanging motionless. He then drove in the direction of the objects but by the time
he got to their location they were gone. By chance the next day he was in the village when
he saw a shop owner and mentioned the lights. The shopkeeper stated she had
seen a long cylindrical UFO over the village at the same time as his sighting. She
described the object as having a series of equally spaced lights on its length. She said that
the object literally disappeared before her eyes after viewing it for approximately one
minute. The officer did not report the sighting for fear of ridicule.

1978 0230 hours. January. The A65 Skipton to Gargrave road, North Yorkshire. Two on

vehicle on their way to meet another police vehicle to exchange internal mail. There was a
heavy coating of snow on the ground and the driving conditions were dangerous. They
drove over the brow of a hill to see below and to their left a bright
light in the distance. Initially thinking it was a house they soon realised the light was in an
empty field that they’d passed by many times in the course of their duties. The object was
stationary for a moment before slowly moving across the wintry landscape. The object was
dome shaped with a white light that appeared to be coming
from some kind of window structure. Forms part of a series of sightings by the principal
named officer.
