Title: Accommodation problem of female students of The

University of Dhaka and the impact of this problem on them.

Introduction: The University Of Dhaka (commonly

referred to as Dhaka University or just DU) is a public research
University in Bangladesh. Established in 1921, University Of
Dhaka is the first University of the Bangladeshi nation. With
more than 32,000 students and 1600 faculty, it is the largest
University in the country and popularly known as the “Oxford of
the East”.
Students admitted to the Departments and Institutes of the
University have either to reside in or be attached to a hall of
residence. The University has thirteen halls of residence and
two hostels for male students; and four halls of residence and
one hostel for female students.
As most of the students of Dhaka University are not permanent
resident of Dhaka city so they have to depend mainly on
University halls for their accommodation. The University halls
are not sufficient according to the number of students so after
getting admission, most of the students have to face
accommodation problem, specially the female students. Female
students have to suffer a lot for accommodation problem. They
prefer to reside in University halls because of their security,
social position, financial and some other reasons. As the
number of seats in female halls is insufficient for the female
students and it takes a lengthy and crucial process to get seat
in residential halls. So, sometimes they have to stay in different
ladies hostels, sublets and in relatives’ house. But these
sources of accommodation are not preferable and convenient
to them.
Accommodation problem is one of the main problems of female
students of Dhaka University and it creates severe impact on
them.
This study will try to make an attempt to better understand the
accommodation problem of female students of The University
of Dhaka and it will also try to analyze the problem and its
impact.
Research Questions: Our research questions will be:
1. Is the limitation of seats in Dhaka University halls
regarded as the main reason behind accommodation
problem of female students?
2. Which year’s female students do suffer much for this
problem?
3. Does this problem create any impact on the female
students?

Hypothesis:
The number of halls and seats allotted for the female students
of the University of Dhaka are not sufficient on to the demand
of students. The University authority is not concentrating
properly on this issue due to financial scarcity and other
reasons. Newly admitted female students suffer most for the
accommodation problem. Political influence is another major
reason to enhance accommodation problem. This problem is
creating severe impact on female students’ physical and
mental condition as well as on their prime goal-Education.
