MODAL VERBS (EXERCISES)

TASK 1: Translate into English using modal verbs:

1. Se poate ca Daria să vină cu prietenii ei la petrecere.

Daria may be coming to the party with her friends.

2. Ar fi trebuit să îl ajuți să termine proiectul la biologie!

You should have helped him finish the biology project!

3. Se cuvine ca băiatul să le spună părinților lui adevărul.

The boy ought to tell his parents the truth.

4. Nu era nevoie să cumperi acei pantofi! Copilul are multe perechi de pantofi.
You didn't have to buy those shoes! The child has many pairs of shoes.

5. Nu ar fi trebuit să plece dacă ara gheață pe stradă! El ar fi putut să își rupă piciorul!
He shouldn't have left if there was ice on the street! He could have broken his leg!

6. Nu a fost nevoie să conduc pentru că hotelul nostru era aproape.

I didn't have to drive because our hotel was close.

7. El nu a putut să te vadă anul trecut și, din păcate, el nu va putea să te vadă anul acesta pentru că este în
spital.
He couldn't see you last year, and unfortunately he won't be able to see you this year because he's in the
hospital.

8. Se poate ca ea să fi decorat casa pentru cununie. Ea ne-a cerut să îi ducem florile ieri.
She must have decorated the house for the wedding. She asked us to bring her flowers yesterday.

9. S-ar fi cuvenit să dai locul tău acelui bătrân!

You ought to have given your place to that old man!

10. Nu aveți voie să hrăniți animalele de la zoo! Ar putea să moară din cauza unor alimente.
You mustn’t feed the animals at the zoo! They could die from certain food.

11. Aș putea să aduc animalul de companie în excursia noastră la peșteri?

Could I bring our pet on our trip to the caves?

12. Ea a trebuit să plece undeva, dar se poate să vină înapoi să își ia geanta înainte să meargă acasă.

She had to go somewhere, but she may come back to get her bag before she goes home.
TASK 2: Rewrite the sentences from ex. 2 on page 85 using a modal verb (as in the first example) so that the
meaning stays the same.
