    The Gillard Government recognises that training a bigger workforce is vital for the
    strength of our economy and the living standards of our community.
    That’s why Budget 2011-12 Invests in education, apprentices, jobs and training.
    TRAINING
    The Gillard Government is delivering the skilled workers our economy needs while
    ensuring more Australians benefit from our growing prosperity.
    • A new Workforce Development Fund will be created, to respond to the most
    critical emerging skills needs facing the Australian economy.
    • This will deliver 130,000 new training places over 4 years.

    EDUCATION
    The Budget builds on the Government’s strong record of lifting education standards.
    • This Budget provides reward payments for our best teachers. Around
    25,000 of the country’s best teachers each year will receive a reward payment
    worth up to 10 per cent of their salary.
    • $200 million will also be invested over three years to Support Students with
    Disabilities in their classrooms and also improve their learning outcomes.

    APPRENTICESHIPS
    Australia needs a modern apprenticeship system that supports apprentices and drives
    first class training, rather than apprentices simply serving time.
    That’s why we are:
    • Investing in a national apprenticeship mentoring program to support

    apprentices finish their training.
    • Developing new apprenticeship models that allow apprentices to progress
    faster and recognise prior learning.

    HIGHER EDUCATION
    All Australians, regardless of their background or where they live, should have the
    opportunity to gain a university education.
    That is why we are:
    • Investing a further $1.4 billion to meet the demand for growth in university
    enrolments – which will see 480,000 undergraduate places funded this
    year.
    • C
     reating a fund to upgrade infrastructure at regional tertiary institutions and
    assisting Universities to support, attract and retains students from lower socio-
    economic backgrounds.
