TWIN STIM Home Therapy Units

Our Twin Stim units include both the TENS and EMS functions. This allows a patient to vary the treatment
between muscle and nerve stimulation and can reduce the accommodation effect for some patients after long
term use. The FDA just recently allowed patients to have EMS function in a home unit, so it is a great addition
to a traditional TENS unit for therapy benefits.

TENS stands for Trancutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation and utilizes electrical
impulses and waves that target the sensory nerve endings. TENS is best used to
address pain conditions that are directly related to nerve tissues but can be a part
of pain management for a variety of conditions. Patients report the sensation
produced by TENS feels like an electrical tingling or massage like sensation.

EMS stands for Electrical Muscle Stimulation and utilizes electrical impulses and
waves that target muscle tissue. EMS is often used for muscle atrophy or
decreased muscle tone and can be a part of chronic pain management for muscle
related soreness and spasms. EMS can be used to electrically contract and relax the muscles, so patients
report feeling muscle twitches along with electrical tingling.

TwinStim units have two channels or leads. Each channel has two electrodes for separate “sticky” pads and
can be set to a different setting. The pads are best placed over the paraspinal muscles along the spine and
around other joints including wrist, forearm, elbow, shoulder, hip, knee, ankle and foot. These units can be
worn at work or during normal activities with a belt clip which makes the unit portable - helping patients to
manage their care in a drug-free style amidst busy lives. The unit comes with electrodes, a 9-volt battery and
an instruction booklet. Additional electrode pads can be purchased in our office.

Your Twin Stim unit is preset for Rate (100) and Width (70) settings to give you maximum clinical benefit. For
pain relief and nerve stimulation, TENS has the following 5 settings -

B - Burst (shorts bursts - good for localized endorphin “pain control” release)
N - Normal (steady flow - also good for general pain relief)
M - Modulation (mixes burst and normal mode - good for longer use)
SD1 - Strength Duration (alters width and rate automatically - comfortable for longer term use)
SD2 - Strength Duration 2 (same as SD1 - just a little stronger)

Use Burst for 5-30 minutes at a time - mix up other TENS modes for up to hours at a time

EMS has the following two settings - start with the “S” settings for most conditions 15 to 30 minutes

S - Synchronous Mode (all four pads are on for 10 secs / off for 10 secs) - reduces muscle tightness
A - Alternating Mode (each channel “two pads at a time” are on for 10 second intervals

Advanced EMS Protocol - After pain relief stage, for subacute muscle rehab - use Rate (50) and Width (100)
settings for deeper muscle strength benefits. Ask your doctor if you have additional questions.

Warning - The Twin Stim is not to be used with a pacemaker. Do not use on face, head, front of neck or chest,
over pregnant uterus, cancerous tumor or open sore.
