The “camel effect” demonstrate the futility of trying to intentionally remove or
suppress unwanted intrusive thoughts or obsessions. The client is asked to close his
or her eyes and to think about a camel for 2 minutes. Each time the camel thought
disappears, the client raises his or her hand. Next, the client tries not to think about a
camel for 2 minutes and to indicate each time the thought recurs.
Clearly, few people are completely successful in maintaining or dismissing the
target thought. Discussion then centers on the difficulty of maintaining and
suppressing “camel” thoughts. The therapist can ask what it would be like to try
hard not to think of a camel for hours on end.
“What would happen if some dire consequence occurred if the camel
thought recurred, such as if you lost $100 each time you allowed your
mind to drift toward a camel?” The aim of this exercise is for the client to
experience the negative impact that intentional mental control and other
neutralizing responses have on the frequency and distress of unwanted
thoughts.
