February 2006 to the present, Land Steward Richland County Wisconsin
My position as a land steward has given me many hours of experience operating ch
ain saws, snatch blocks, logging wenches, frontend loaders, brush hogs, agricult
ural disc and planters. In addition to my experience with operations of equipmen
t, I have learned directly from the Wisconsin DNR the proper methods for tree ca
re, maintenance, species identification and biodiversity restoration and preserv
ation through invasive species irradiation. These skills are critical to biodive
rsity preservation and can act as a buffer to many types of disease and pests in
cluding but not limited to, Oak wilt, slime flux, canker rot and blister rust as
well as EAB, bark and long horn beetles, tent caterpillars and gypsy moths.
October 2004 to January 2007, Subcontractor for Silverstone Construction
Services included: carpentry small equipment operations such as (Bob Cat, forkli
ft, Lull. and frontend loaders) as well as general labor, window door and siding
installation and silt fencing in accordance with DNR regulations.
October 1992 to December 2006,
Owner/operator and CEO of the Village Inn Restaurant and catering service in Cot
tage Grove Wisconsin: This was one of the most profound learning experiences of
my life. I learned many skills that can only be absorbed by struggling in the wo
rld of entrepreneurs. I learned accounting, bookkeeping, people skills from my c
ustomers and employees such as trust, teamwork, synergy, productivity and effici
ency in planning large projects. I learned many useful lessons about prejudice,
equality, greed, honesty, integrity, trust and many others concerning the basics
of human nature. Owning and operating this business for nearly fifteen years wa
s a major accomplishment to me and taught me that, no challenge or problem exist
s that I cannot solve.
July 1990 to October 1992,
Banquet chef and temporary head chef for Cherokee country club
Prior to 1990,
Student in Southern California, working, construction and food service and atten
ding school part time.
Additional experience: Family has owned conservation properties and MFL's since
1992:
I currently manage a 160-acre plot in the MFL (managed forestlands) program wit
h the Wisconsin DNR in Richland County. Planted with 80,000 pine and black walnu
t in 1975 through 1985 this plot is undergoing massive restoration. Management o
f this plot consists of native reforestation, releasing walnut trees by thinning
the protective rows of pine, pruning and thinning walnuts and removing invasive
species such as Ironwood, multi-flora rose, grape, autumn olive, buckthorn, bla
ck locust and Box Elder in order to release native stands of Birch, Maple, Oak a
nd Hickory. My current production is well over 170 cords or 204 tons for lumber
and pulp wood not including firewood.
I am extremely pleased with the pure educational opportunities and accomplishmen
ts that I have had as a land steward. I am confident that my efforts will increa
se the overall health, and biodiversity of our forestlands. Additionally my effo
rts as a land steward will increase carbon sequestration, reduce erosion and run
off, create top soil, improve watershed and provide forests and diverse habitats
that will continue to flourish for use by future generations. Finally, being bo
rn into an agricultural family of dairy farmers I have spent many hours with far
m animals and equipment and am quite comfortable in industrial and or agricultur
al settings. I feel that I am a well-rounded person with excellent people skills
and a deeply engrained work ethic. I am also semi-proficient in Spanish and cap
able of giving direction and comprehension.
Summary: My goal is to find my niche in the environmental science field. I am in
terested in all aspects of sustainability and conservation. I am excited to cont
inue my education, and pass my knowledge and values onto my children in hopes th
at they will have a sustainable future.
At the risk of sounding over confidant: I am extremely dependable, honest, consc
ientious, loyal, hard working, committed, determined, task and production orient
ed, efficient, have good communication and problem solving skills and will have
a positive effect on a wide verity of operations and or projects. My deepest des
ire is to be directly involved in rectifying one or more of the many environment
al issues we face in these uncertain times and simultaneously make a humble livi
ng. Thank you for your time and consideration.
Sincerely, Pat Donahue.
