Building Services Process

Brief

This is a group assignment to study and analyse the services available in a

building. Each group should consist of 4 – 5 students. This assignment stands
20% of the total assessment.

Objective

The objective of this assignment is as follows:

1. To introduce basic principles and procedures of building services process
through real life project (experiential learning)
2. To understand the sequence and coordination of design, building services
and construction at site
3. To expose students to building services technology/methods responding to
site context
4. To allow student to demonstrate their understanding and knowledge of
building services, material and technology

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this assignment, students will be able to:

1. Explain the principles and installation of building services within the total
design and construction process.
2. Define the basic requirement of UBBL related to mechanical air-
conditioning, fire safety, electricity supply and vertical transportation system.

Task / Methodology

Select a high rise building (exceeding 5 storeys) on your choice. Identify the
services within the building. You may choose 2 out of the following services:

a) air-conditioning b) electric supply c) fire protection d)

vertical transportation

The report should include the study and analysis done when visiting the building
and interviewing the related personnel. It consists of the following topics:

~ Introduction on your choice of building, basic requirements of UBBL on the

selected services within the building and the typical type of services installed.

~ Description of the main components and materials used

~ The installation and working principle of the services

~ Problems faced by the building or occupants and suggestions on ways to

improve

Photos and necessary sketches must be included into the report and labelled.
The report must be typed with ‘Arial’ font, size 11, printed on A4 size papers and
not more than 30 pages of main content. It comprises the cover, table of
content, main content, references and appendix.

Submission

Please include page number into the report and slides.

Prepare your report and presentation slides in both hard copy and soft copy. For
soft copy, a cover which clearly shows the subject, group member’s name and
date of submission must be attached. All reports and CDs have to be submitted

on Monday in Week 13. The presentation will be held on Monday and Thursday in
the same week.
