Bay Range Hindustan campus is built amidst a lush green stretch of over 150 acres abutting
beautiful lakes. The green atmosphere is conducive for a calm and peaceful academic
pursuit. The green campus has around 800 trees This reduces the overall temperature in the
campus by 3 to 4 degree Celsius. The project Hindustan University’s Green YUVATHARANG
(HUGY) includes “RAIN WATER HARVESTING” over 50,00,000 sq.ft. of area. This is used to
recharge the ground water. The campus has more than 8000 students studying at
Hindustan. This population imposes a strain on water resources. Hence, a well designed
effluent treatment plant (STP) has been established in 2005, which in turn feeds the ECO
system. The bio degradation waste is re circulated to gardening effectively. Green recycling
takes care of all the waste and discarded computer systems, electronic items, networking
components, etc., by disposing them to authorized E-waste recycling firms. This partly takes
care of the Pollution Control norms, set by the government of India.
More than 50% of the buildings are environment friendly, designed and constructed, so that
natural breeze and light utilization are maximized. This has reduced the power consumption
by 20% to 30 %. Additional capacitors were installed to increase the Power Factor, thus
reducing the electrical power consumption. All the lights in the green campus have been
replaced with CFL bulbs. Window Air conditioners are replaced with multi split units, to
maximize the effect of air conditioning and minimize the power consumption.
The Hindustan University received G-CUBE Award from Ms. Sheila Dikshit, the Honorable
Chief Minister of Delhi, in the year 2008 for Good Green Governance of the campus.
A green classroom, a user friendly, “ Next generation Class room” was designed and
established, for providing a toxic free environment keeping the scenario healthy. The
classrooms were equipped with digital teaching aids with attendance monitoring system.
These are powered by solar PV panels.
Efforts are underway to set up solar energy panels on the terrace to take care of the basic
electricity requirements of the university.
The Eco awareness club “ YUVATHARANG” was formed to create GREEN ENVIRONMENT
awareness and to maximize the use of the natural resources in the campus. The project
YUVATHARANG was formed initially with 300 members. Cleaning the campus in record time,
creating fish ponds, planting more trees, etc. were part of the club activities as well. The
campus was made “Plastic free campus”. Hence, the name, Hindustan University Green
Yuvatharang, for this project.
Conferences, Seminars and workshops were conducted to create public green awareness.
Around 200 NSS cadres were also members of this endeavor. 20 % of the research
conducted in the campus is towards conservation of energy.
Why was the project started
Objective: The main objective of this project is to build an eco friendly green campus.
Involve the academicians in creating and maintaining green campus. Save on power and
water consumption. Maximize the use of light and heat as well.
Target group: Students and faculty from Hindustan University and others peoples
interested in green campus from other Industries / Universities / NGO / Government
organizations.
1. Good Green Governance - Creating an eco awareness in the campus and within
the Hindustan Folks.
3. Addressing Global warming – The ECO conscious Bay Range campus at Hindustan
with green cover provides a conducive environment for students. Around 800 trees
are the main attraction of the green campus. This reduces the temperature inside the
campus by 3 to 4 degree Celsius.
5. Green Energy Generations – A windmill has been set up by the students to draw
power from the natural air and the magnetic properties embedded on the blades while
rotating. Efforts are underway to set up solar energy panels on the terrace to take
care of the basic electricity requirements of the university.
6. Rain Water Harvesting – The project has established “RAIN WATER HARVESTING”
for 50,00,000 sq.ft. of area. This is used to recharge the ground water.
8. Green Recycling – All the waste and discarded computer systems, electronic items,
networking components, etc., have been sold to authorized E-waste recycling firms.
These firms are authorized by the Pollution Control Board of India.
10.Green Classroom – A user friendly “ Next generation Class room” was designed and
established for providing a toxic free environment keeping the scenario healthy. The
classrooms were equipped with digital teaching aids with attendance monitoring
system. These are powered by solar PV panels.
5. Accepting not to the use of power and light – by softly implementing procedures.
List the 5 points how can the programme serve as a model that can be replicated or adapted
by others?
1. More and more detailed programming need to be charted out for eco friendliness.
