Medical Practice towards Better
Women’s Health”
Prof. Dr. Al-Inany 2010
Al-Inany, Hesham M.D, Ph.D., is currently a
professor of Obstetrics and Gynaecology at Kasr
Al-Ainy Faculty of Medicine, Cairo University that
is one of the oldest and largest medical schools in
the world. As well as he is a reproductive
endocrinology and IVF consultant at the Egyptian
Fertility Center. He was born in Cairo, Egypt in 7th
of August 1967. He joined the Faculty of Medicine,
Cairo University in 1984, where he received his medical education and
graduated in 1990, with a grade of excellent with honor. After that he
was appointed for residency in Kasr Al-Ainy Maternity Hospital, Faculty of
Medicine, and Cairo University. He received his clinical and medical
experience there and rose through the rank from a resident of Obstetrics
and Gynaecology (1992) to a professor since (2004). He was elected as
member of the research committee of Kasr Al-Ainy Faculty of Medicine,
as well as the supervisor of the Obstetrics and Gynaecology Library since
(2002).
During this period he finished his Master degree in Obstetrics and

Gynaecology (1994) with grade of excellent, and then he got his M.D
degree in (1998). Dr. Al-Inany, interested in reproductive endocrinology,
so, he has got the Fellowship of Maastricht University in infertility and
reproductive health (1998), after that the Ph.D. in that sub-specialty from
Amsterdam in (2006).
He was dedicated to his career with special interest in reproductive

endocrinology and infertility, so, from his early days of research he
centered on this area. His research submitted for partial fulfillment of the
M.Sc. degree was about Gamete micromanipulation as a method of
assisted reproductive technology (1994), followed by his post doctoral
research study bout the Hysteroscopic evaluation of the uterine cavity
after surgical evacuation (1998).

Doctor Al-Inany has built up his life on the following pillars Research,
Education, Charity work and Leadership. To make simple he tried to
reach each part of the health care circle to end by improvement of the
quality of services given to women. So his contribution in each of these
sections was obvious and highly appreciated, he has got high
achievements in each of them as follows:
First is the Research part, Doctor Al-Inany, continued his

involvement in research as early as (1998), until the present time he had
about (125) published articles(72) of it in journals listed in the
Science Citation Index (SCI), his papers were cited (1198) times,
while, there were two papers that highly important “GnRH
antagonist in assisted reproduction: a Cochrane review” published in
Human Reproduction, (2002) and cited (221) times, the second was
“Gonadotrophin-releasing hormone antagonists for assisted conception: a
Cochrane review” published in Reproductive biomedicine (2007) and
cited (160) times. Because of all these efforts that were of high
quality and affected positively the research library the research
H-Index of Dr. Al-Inany is (16), this is considered a high research
index and indicates how much valuable was his work.
Moreover, he was a co-investigator in two multi-center

international trials “The Orgalutran Weight Adjusted Trial”
sponsored by Organon and the “European Middle East Recombinant LH
for Triggering of Ovulation” sponsored by Serono. Besides this he was the
Egyptian representative in the international multicenter trial of the
cesarean section techniques “International Caesar Trial” in
cooperation with Oxford University.

Doctor Al-Inany serves as a reviewer for a number of international and
regional journals; the Fertility and Sterility, Human Reproduction,
Gynecologic Obstetrics Investigation, Middle East Fertility
Society Journal and the European Journal of Obstetrics and
Gynecology.
Furthermore, since (2004) he serves in the editorial board of

Cochrane MDSG, Gynecologic Obstetrics Investigation, British
Journal of Obstetrics and Gynaecology and recently for
Reproductive Biomedicine Online since (2010).
Doctor Al-Inany has gone beyond this he has given the poor women a
hope to be pregnant, as he knows well the current economic situation
in Egypt and many other Arabian Countries, with his colleagues he
established a new drug formula for induction of ovulation that
combined the clomiphen citrate with the acetyl cystiene for
improvement the pregnancy rate, this will help many women with
low incomes to have a good chance for solving their problem and
rescue their families from the financial, psychological as well as the
other drawbacks of the more complex treatment options. As it is
effective, cheap and safe drug, the drug was registered in the
invention registry of the Ministry of Scientific Research, Egypt.
And they corporate with Mount Sinai Hospital in Toronto Canada
to pursue its commercialization in a manner which best serves
the public interest.
Second is the Education Part, Doctor Al-Inany has been invited as

speaker in many lectures at both the national and international
levels and he is a speaker in “ESHRE” Conferences as well as the
Middle East Fertility Society since (2004) and till the present
time (2010).

Doctor Al-Inany is fully aware and involved in the problems of his
community as well as the Arabian region due to his co-operation
with other governmental and social organizations in the Arabian
world to improve the current situation. Therefore, he is a recognized
leader in evidence based medicine, he participated in the
development of Evidence Based Medicine Center in the Kasr Al-
Ainy Faculty of Medicine that organize may workshops and lecture
to disseminate the evidence based medicine, besides this, he is one
of the main pillars for the Pan Arab Evidence Based Society,
consequently, doctor Al-Inany has developed a system for production
of a generation that practice according to the evidence, hence,
better management and health for our communities.
Doctor Al-Inany has an exemplary efforts in medical education as has

many lectures for both undergraduate and postgraduate students
besides this he has extensively lectured in reproductive
endocrinology and infertility. Doctor Al-Inany is the educational
tutor for (5) postgraduate students yearly, in addition to that he is
responsible of teaching the reproductive endocrinology
curriculum in Kasr Al-Ainy Faculty of Medicine for both the
undergraduate and the postgraduate students. Also, as an examiner
he actively participated in improvement of the examinations in the
Faculty to meet the international standards.

Third part is his charity work, the W.H.O defined Health as a “
state of complete physical, mental and social wellbeing and not merely
the absence of disease infirmity”. Infertility may not threaten the physical
health, however it can have a serious impact on the mental and social
health. In our developing countries the childlessness makes huge
problems for the couples that extend to their families and the
community. Many women experience domestic violence and rude
behavior from their husbands and families especially their families in-law,
and that may end by their isolation and exclusion from the
community.
In spite that the infertility is a global problem, the vast majority of

it is in the third world countries and recent studies showed that in
the Arab region almost one third of all couples have problem to
conceive. In addition to this it reflected that about 10% of women’s
visits to doctors in various medical specialties are related to
problems of childlessness.
The problem of infertility in our region and developing countries worsen

by the high prevalence of folk methods of infertility treatment as
well as medical malpractice due to lack of adequate knowledge
and proper training of doctors.

Doctor Al-Inany is fully aware with the Arabian women worries as
well as in Africa, hence, through his charity work he established the
First Free Arabian Website concerned with infertility and
assisted reproduction techniques for health education of the couples
as well as answering their questions and helping them in their problems.
Through this website (www.khosoba.com) he has answered more than
(12,000) consultation until now, its slogan is The Arabian Home for
Fertility. Not only, this but also, recently he has started a TV channel
on the YouTube website in order to present series of episodes
about infertility to reach as much as he can from the audience in order
to provide them with the most recent medical knowledge in an easy and
simple way that assists them during their treatment course and do not be
a victim of a fraud.
After long time of experience in sharing and solving the women’s

problems doctor Al-Inany touched how much the women suffer of
medical malpractice that worsen their problems and deepens their
hurts, consequently, he established the Evidence Based Women’s
Health Society and Journal that is non for profit organization
present in Egypt and directed internationally. Aiming for better
women’s health all over the world with priority to the Arabian and
African women and will try to ensure that they are receiving a high
standard of care. For providing as many doctors as possible with the best
evidence and the new management options, a website for the society
has been developed to enhance the medical knowledge of the
doctors and offer them continuous medical education.
The aim of this society and journal is to be as a start for all the Arabian
doctors and those who are concerned with the women’s health to co-
operate for improving the condition of the Arabian women and
regaining the Arabian Leadership in one of the most crucial aspects
that is the health of our mothers, sisters, wives and daughters.

Finally is his leadership, Doctor Al-Inany is the supervisor of the
Obstetrics and Gynecology Library in Kasr Al-Ainy Faculty of
Medicine since 2002, he is the responsible for the Research
strategic plan of the Obstetrics and Gynecology Department as
well as that of the Faculty. As an appreciation of his tremendous
efforts doctor Al-Inany was recognized with awards from the Cairo
University in (2002) and (2007) as well as the Egyptian Fertility
Society Award (2002). He was elected for the European Society For
Human Reproduction and Embryology “ESHERE” award in (2004)
and (2006). Also, in (2008) he was awarded the Abdel-Hamid
Shoman Prize for research that is a prestigious and highly competitive
award in the Arab region. In (2009) he awarded the National Award
in Medical Science.

‫الستاذ الدكتور هشام جابر العنانى أستاذ أمراض النساء والتوليد بكلية طب قصر العينى‪،‬جامعة القاهرة وأحد مؤسسي‬
‫الجمعية العربية للطب المبنى على الدليل و مؤسس جمعية صحة المرأة المبنية على الدليل‪ ،‬هو من مواليد القاهرة‬
‫في السابع من أغسطس لعام ‪.1967‬‬
‫كان الدكتور العناني متفوًقا في سنوات تعلمه بالمراحل‪ :‬البتدائية والعدادية والثانوية إلى أن دخل كلية الطب ونال‬
‫بكالوريوس الطب والجراحة بامتياز سنة ‪1990‬م وعين في كليته نائًبا للتوليد وأمراض النساء سنة ‪1991‬م‪ ،‬و حصل على‬
‫ماجستير التوليد و أمراض النساء بتقدير امتياز عام ‪ 1994‬ثم نال الدكتوراه في التوليد وأمراض النساء من جامعة القاهرة‬
‫سنة ‪1998‬م وبعد ذلك و نظرا لعلو همته تمكن من نيل درجة الدكتوراه في الصحة النجابية من جامعة امستردام سنة‬
‫‪2006‬م وحصل على إجازات ومهمات في الجامعات الهولندية سنة ‪ 1997‬حتى سنة ‪1998‬م‪.‬‬
‫يتميز دكتور العناني باهتمامه الشديد بالبحث العلمي و ذلك نظرا ليمانه بمدى اهميته و تأثيره في تطوير علم الطب بما‬
‫يعود على المرضى ببالغ النفع‪ ،‬و قد ترجم هذا الهتمام بالعلم و البحث العلمي في صورة )‪ (125‬بحث علمي منشور في‬
‫الدوريات الطبية‪ (72) ،‬بحث من هذه البحاث منشور في دوريات عالمية مسجلة في دليل الدوريات العلمية )‪SCINECE‬‬
‫‪ ،(CITATION INDEX‬وقد تم الستعانة و السترشاد بهذه البحاث )‪ (1198‬ألف و مائة و ثمانية و تسعين مرة‪ ،‬و‬
‫نتيجة لذلك كان معامل البحث للدكتور العناني)‪ (H-Index‬هو )‪ (16‬الذي يجعل من دكتور العناني في اوائل صفوف‬
‫العلماء المهتمين بالبحث العلمي‪ .‬ذلك بالضافة إلى )‪ (5‬كتب اما اشترك في كتابتها أو كتابة احد فصولها سواء منفردا أو‬
‫مع أحد الزملء‪،‬و من كتاباته المنفرده نشرت له جامعة امستردام كتابا في الصحة النجابية عام ‪ ،2006‬كما نشرت له‬
‫المجموعة الطبية البريطانية فصل كامل كتبه منفردا عن عقم السيدات عام ‪.2008‬‬

‫لم يقتصر دور دكتور العناني على هذا الحد و لكنه كان محاضرا في )‪ (43‬مؤتمرا عالميا و إقليميا‪ ،‬و مشرفا على )‪(18‬‬
‫طالبا للدراسات العليا بكلية الطب قصر العيني بجامعة القاهرة ما بين ماجستير و دكتوراه‪ ،‬بالضافة إلى الشراف‬
‫المشترك مع الجامعات الهولندية على )‪ (6‬طلب لنيل درجة الدكتوراه من عام ‪ 2000‬إلى الن‪ .‬و لما كان لشبكة‬
‫المعلومات الدولية دورا رائدا في نشر العلم و المعلومات اهتم دكتور العناني بذلك فنشر )‪ (17‬دورة علمية على النترنت‬
‫للمساعدة في الفهم الصحيح لمراض النساء و العقم‪ .‬كما نظم الدكتور هشام العنانى برنامج التعليم الطبي المستمر فى مجال‬
‫الطب المسند لمدة سنتين من عام ‪ 2006-2004‬حيث تم القاء العديد من المحاضرات ‪،‬و أيضا أسس مدرسة طبية متميزة‬
‫متخصصة في الطب المبنى على الدليل لعلج العقم‪ ،‬وهو صاحب الدور الريادي في إدخال هذا التخصص إلى مصر‬
‫وتطويره وتوسيع قاعدة المشتغلين به من خلل تدريب أجيال متوالية‪.‬‬
‫نبعا من فهمه العميق لمشكلة العقم و ما ينتج عنها من تاثير على نفسية الزوجين و علقتهما بالضافة إلى مضاعافاتها على‬
‫السرة و المجتمع تمكن الدكتور هشام العنانى مع اثنين من زملءه مببن تطببوير دواء تنشببيط المبببيض المسببمى بببالكلوميفين‬
‫سيترات وذلك باضافة مركب الستيل سيستين مما ادى الى زيادة فاعلية الدواء بالمعببايير المتعببارف عليهببا دوليببا وارتفبباع‬
‫نشاط المبيض فى الدراسات التى تم عملها وبناء عليه تم استحداث دواء الكلوموسيستين لعلج حالت ضعف التبويض وقببد‬
‫تم تسجيل هذا التطوير تحت براءة الختراعات باسم الباحثين الثلثة تحت رقم ‪ ،233-2004‬و قد تم التفبباق مببع مستشببفى‬
‫"ماونت ساناي" في تورونتو‪ ،‬كندا على بداية انتاج هذا الدواء لخدمة السيدات اللواتي يعانين من خلل بالتبويض‪.‬‬
‫لم يكن دور دكتور العناني مقتصرا داخل محراب العلم و البحاث بل كان متفاعل مع المجتمع مببدركا لمشبباكله ومببا يعبباني‬
‫منه السيدات فقام بانشاء أول موقع عربي على النىترنت يهتم بمشكلة العقم و يقدم الستشارات المجانية للزوجين فيعينهما‬
‫على فهم مشكلتهم بالشكل الصحيح و ايجاد انسب الحلول لها‪ ،‬و إلى الن هنبباك مببا يزيببد عببن )‪ (12000‬استشببارة تببم الببرد‬
‫عليها‪.‬‬
‫و بعد سنوات من المعايشة و الخبرة بالضافة الى العمل الميداني قام دكتور العناني بانشاء جمعية صحة المرأة المبنية على‬
‫الدليل و الجريدة الطبية الخاصة بها و هى جمعية خيرية غيببر هببادفه للربببح تهببدف إلببى مسبباعدة أطببباء التوليببد و أمببراض‬
‫النساء على التعليم الطبي المستمر و تمدهم بالمصادر الموثوق بها و اخببر المعلومببات الطبيببة فببي هببذا المجببال‪ ،‬و هببذا لن‬
‫نسبة ل يستهان بها من مشاكل عدم القدرة على النجاب لدى السيدات يعود إلى عدم حصولهم علببى خدمببة طبيببة جيببدة ممببا‬
‫أدى إلي تفاقم مشاكلهم او تضيع الوقت و المال عليهم‪.‬‬
‫و تقديرا لهذه الجهود التي كان لها تأثيرا واضحا و بصمة خاصة قد تم اختيار دكتور العناني عضوًا فى مركز التعليم‬
‫الطبى المستمر لمدة ثلث سنوات متوالية من سنة ‪ ،2006-2004‬و أسند إليه الشراف العام على مكتبة مستشفى أمراض‬
‫النساء والتوليد منذ عام ‪ 2001‬حتى الن‪ ،‬انتخب بمجلس إدارة الجمعية العربية للطب المبنى على الدليل منذ انشائها فى‬
‫عام ‪ 2004‬حتى الن‪.‬‬
‫وعين عضوًا في هيئة تحرير الدورية البريطانية لمراض النساء والتوليد منذ عام ‪ 2004‬حتى الن ‪،‬و اختير عضوا فى‬
‫هيئة تحرير لدورية البحاث التشخيصية فى أمراض النساء والتوليد منذ عام ‪ 2006‬حتى الن‪ ،‬و في عام ‪ 2010‬تم‬
‫اختياره عضوا في هيئة تحرير مجلة الصحة النجابية على النترنت و هى بريطانية المنشاء ‪.‬‬
‫هذا بالضافة إلى اختياره محّكما دولّيا فى الدورية البريطانية لمراض النساء والتوليد منذ عبام ‪ 2004‬حبتى الن‪ ،‬الدوريبة‬
‫المريكية للخصوبة و العقم‪ ،‬و الدورية العالمية للتكاثر البشري‪ ،‬بالضافة إلى الدورية الوروبية للتوليد و أمراض النساء‪.‬‬
‫كما تم اختياره مستشاًرا دولّيا للدورية العالمية للطب المبنى على الدليل الكلينيكى والصادرة عن مكتبة المجلة البريطانية‬
‫الطبية ‪ ،‬وعضًوا للتحرير في أول وأقوى مؤسسة عالمية )كوكران( للطب المبنى على الدليل حيث يشارك بفاعلية فى‬
‫مجموعة الخصوبة ومعالجةالعقم المبنى على الدليل العلمى والمشتق من البحاث والدراسات العلمية‪.‬‬

Doctor Al-Inany is extensively involved in the education process and one of his major
concerns is students support either as tutor or advisor for both undergraduate as well
as the postgraduate students, he considers that medical education is fundamental for
better medical practice. This is not at the national level only, but also at the
international level, he is actively participating as a co-supervisor or a tutor for Ph.D.
degrees in Netherland. Moreover, he has excellent communication and interpersonal
skills that facilitated his role to support the student of different culture as well as
makes him able to break down the cross cultural communication barriers, since the

I- Educational Live Events as a Scientific Organizer:
Doctor Al-Inany as a believer of continuous medical education and its importance

in the clinical practice he get involved in many live events as an organizer since he
was a lecturer as he was responsible of the organization of the monthly grand
round of the Obstetrics and Gynaecology Department that involved presentation and
discussion of a topic by one of the senior residents as well as presentation of most
interesting cases admitted to the Maternity hospital this month and presented by the
assistant lectures involved in their management. Since (2002) he is the supervisor of
the Obstetrics and Gynaecology Department Library.

Doctor Al-Inany is completely convinced with that investment in persons is the

real one, hence, he has a reputation as an exceptional mentor. As, Kasr Al-Ainy Faculty
of Medicine is using a conventional study programs, he was involved in the
academic teaching as early as (1999) when he was a lecturer of Obstetrics and
Gynaecology, he believes that this way has the benefits of making the knowledge and
science more easier to be understood as well as applied and in the same time he
invests in each member of his class, fostering independence, professional
development and self-esteem. Besides this, recently he dedicates time in his

The information technology is having a profound impact on education as it is

considered a fundamental role for learning. Starting from this concept, Doctor Al-
Inany is one of the leaders in Egypt and Middle East who participated early
in online education. Moreover, he extended beyond that by establishing the first
Arabic website that concerned with Reproductive Medicine that disseminate
the information in this field for both the general people as well as the professionals.
Not only this but also he recently has established a charity society that aims
to continuous medical education of doctors according to the best evidence that
is Evidence Based Women Health Society, through the website of the society
he helps the doctors for better understanding of Obstetrics and Gynecology
which in turn will enhance the level of care give to women. In addition to this the
society will organize different workshops to promote the professional skills
and keep it up to date as much as possible.
