Bahrain Teachers Society marched a protest following the
onslaught of the Bahraini security and army forces on the unarmed peaceful demonstrators who were in the Lulu Square. The teachers’ demonstration came, also, after the government refused the protesters’ political and economic demands and after it rejected the negotiation and used violence against them. Accordingly, the Bahrain Teachers Society as well as the vast majority of the Bahraini teachers, both Sunnis and Shiites, decided to protest in support of the protests demands to get a constitutional monarchy, contractual constitution, elected government and condemning the brutality of the regime in dealing with protestors.
Furthermore, the society demands listening to the
people’s legitimate demands, resorting to political solutions, along with respecting the human rights and freedom. Based on that, the Bahrain Teachers Society called the teachers for protesting in front of the schools’ gates on Sunday, February 20th, 2011. In addition, they call them to refuse teaching or doing any other works within school while protesting peacefully in solidarity with the masses of the people. They also called the students not to attend schools for their security. On this day, the teachers’ solidarity was shown by standing for an hour and a half near the schools’ gates, where they handed out roses and raised Bahrain flags. Besides that, they raised banners calling for political, living and constitutional reforms. Later on, thousands of teachers headed to the Lulu Square carrying out a massive march, leaving their classes which were empty of students. Meanwhile, many male and female students from various ages were presented at the Lulu Square. On the next day, Monday, February 21, 2011, more than ten thousand teachers gathered in a march from Dana Roundabout to Lulu Square, stressing their solidarity and the unity of their demands. Therefore, the educational movement was paralyzed in the range of 85% to 90% in all kingdom areas. However, they society decided that this protest will be open for an indefinite period. On the other hand, the Ministry of Education kept advertising for volunteers to teach the students and invited the protestors- teachers to return to their schools. Yet, all the protestors stressed their national unity in continuing the protest to achieve the people’s demands and support them.
