Country list with admission requirements for international applicants to Master’s degree
programmes taught in English at the University of Oslo 2010-2011
International applicants to Master’s degree programmes taught in English at the University of Oslo
must meet a minimum educational requirement (column 2 below) as well as English proficiency
requirement (column 3 below).
Proficiency in English must be documented by one of the two internationally recognised tests, TOEFL
or IELTS with the minimum test scores:
TOEFL - Test of English as a Foreign Language with a minimum score of

550 paper-based test (PBT)
213 computer-based test (CBT)
80 internet-based test (IBT)
The TOEFL code number for the University of Oslo is 0756. Applicants must themselves arrange for
the test result to be sent to the University of Oslo.
IELTS - International English Language Testing Service (academic) test with a minimum score of 6.0.
University education must be from a recognised institution. Note regarding column 3 “English test
required?”: “Yes” means applicants must pass a required English test irrespective of previous
education. “No” means applicants are exempted from taking an English test on the condition that
they can document education as described in column 2 of the table below. Other exemptions are
listed on page 13.

as a language of instruction in one of the Nordic countries
3. Students who have completed a Bachelor degree with English as a language of instruction in
one of the Nordic countries.
4. Students who have a degree in English language and/or literature.
5. Students with International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma.
6. Students who have passed University of Cambridge exams with a grade B or better or Advanced
Placement International English Language examination (APIEL) with a minimum of 4 points.
