u Chapter alums- in the

San Francisco Bay area at
least·- have a long tradition
of celebrating the Christmas
season with an annual luncheon
in San Francisco-· an event
attended by increasing numbers
of Tekes as the years pass. Once
again we have Frater Dan
Costello to thank for making
arrangements at the Olympic Club
for this festive Hoiiday bash.
We'll gather about 11:30 for
socializing and cocktails, and
lunch will be served at 12:30.
Fraters have long claimed that
OlympiC Crub luncheons are far
better than traditional banquet
fare.
Cost of the event is $38.00
which includes wine on the table.
Cocktails are extra. A check to
Dan Costello, and payable to him
will assure your place. Please
use the form on page 5. The
Olympic Club is at 524 Post
Street, just above Union Square.
Parking is usually available on the
top two floors of Sutter·Stockton
garage if you get there by 11 :00
or so and beat the last of the
holiday shoppers. Some Fraters
are using BART and walking the
short four blocks from the station.
Once again, Fraters will have
a choice of entree. Choice #1 is

their second grandchild, a boy this
time. Daughter Allison and
husband now live near them in
Lafayette, not far from Howard's

JERRY BLALOCK '54 is still
retired from United Airlines and
the military, and having a great
time flying his Cessna 182,
motorcycling in the Sierra and
doing some consulting in the Bay

JACK LEHBERG '56 reports that
wife Sandy retired from teaching
in June 1999 while he still puts in
some time as a CPA during tax
season. The rest of the year, he

celebrated their 40th anniversary
in August 1999 by spending three
weeks in the Greek Islands with a
couple of short stays in Athens.
In early October they visited
land to see their newly·arrived
fifth grandchild and spent some
time in colonial Williamsburg.
Then, later that month they spent
a week on the island of
Guadeloupe. Sandy has pledged
that they would stay home in
2000, but they still began
the rear with a trip to the Napa·
Sonoma Wine Country. The

HERM FISHER '52 and wife
Marilyn are now living in their
home on the ranch in Walnut
Grove. Except for their own 2·
acre homeSite, though, the ranch
has been sold. Herm is still active
in Rotary Club. Their daughter is
a nurse in Fresno and their son is
a business consultant in Grants
Pass, Oregon. The Fisher

"I am still living in Orinda, working
as a surgeon in Walnut Creek, still
married to Sharon, and we have
an eight-year..old daughter, Katie.
I have recently seen Fraters from
the seventies, including BOB
BRACKETT, JEFF McNEAR and
DAN DIETDERICH. Jon lives at

Besides "finding» a number of our
"lost" Fraters, LARRY BREHM '68
has written us to say that he will
send even more names soon. He
adds, "I know of one active Teke
poker game held every six weeks
or so. It was started by Dick
Graves (now deceased) 35 years
ago and continues today in his

JIM McCOLLUM '34, President for
Public Relations, who retired 22
years ago as PG&E's Vice­
resides in the East Bay hills. His
wife Harriet has been confined to
an assisted living home for
Alzheimer patients. His son, Dr.
Duncan McCollum practices in
Santa Cruz and lives near Aptos
where there are two grandchildren.
Daughter Susie is a commercial
artist and designer with studios in
Florida and Southern California. At
Cal, Jim was Editor-in-Chief of the
Daily Californian in 1934. He
served in Naval Intelligence with
the Pacific Fleet during World War
II, retiring with the rank of Captain.
He was Cal Teke alumni advisor
after the war and was instrumental
in getting the chapter
reestablished at Cal. Jim's home

is presently undergoing radiation
therapy for Leukemia (Cll). He

golfing in Scotland and Ireland

ANDREW DUN '84 writes, "My
family and I recently moved to
Texas in the Dallas/Ft. Worth
area. I now work fror Tetra Pak, a
liquid food processing and
packaging company, best known
as the maker of juice boxes in the
U.S. As Tetra Pak is the first
"global" company I have worked
for, I travel frequently, often to the
home offices in Europe. My family
is doing well. Daughter lindsay is
8 and son Drew is 6. Both kids are
enjoying school and playing
soccer. Carolyn is volunteering at

Christmas Luncheon every so
often (I remember at the
Presidio once). J correspond "
regularly with DUNC CARTER.
He and his wife live in
Rossmoor. He should be more
active in TKE. I'll shake him up.
Anyhoo... after 42 years of trial
practice I retired in December
1994. I keep busy in retirement
doing volunteer mediation and
arbitration for Hawaii courts. It
keeps the grey matter churning.
I play golf 3-plus times a week
(12 handicap) which is good for
my aching joints. Sally is still
much in demand as a national
flower show judge of entered
arrangements. I sometimes tag
along; but we invariably end up
at our second home on Hornby
Island, British Columbia. We
have 3* acres of lovely water­
front property, well forested and
with a gorgeous view of the
Georgia Strait at our doorstep
and the snowcapped mountains
of the B.C. mainland in the
distance. We spend 4-plus
months there each year, and
reunions with our four grandkids
have been an annual summer
event. We have three kids, two
of whom live in Hawaii with all
the grandkids (ages 4 to 16),
which makes it nice. Life is

ROGER HERRLlNG writes: "I
read Nu News with great
interest, and really like the plan
to reestablish Nu Chapter on
Channing Way. I greatly enjoy
'reading about my Fraters. My
wife, Toni, and I met on a blind
date at a Teke weiner roast and
celebrated 49 years of marriage
last April 21. (I have accused
her of being blind ever since.)
We had five children, losing our
first son at the age of 3 to neuro­
blastoma. We now have two
sons and two daughters. Our
oldest of five grandchildren just
started college. '"Ve rai:.;"ed our
family in La Canada, five
minutes from the Rose Bowl,
being next door to Pasadena
and Glendale. Both of us still
work, Toni in aerospace sales
and I am in automotive body
parts after spending most of my
life in the commercial building
industry. I will never retire, very
much enjoying my field of
endeavor, plus it keeps me
healthier and my mind alert.
Some of my Fraters and I have
met for lunch a couple of times
in recent years, and really had
a great time. It was good to see
them again. Some of my
interests have been skiing,
sailing, backpacking, kayaking, I
was a Scoutmaster seven years,
did Little League, was very
active in Rotary, and was
also in Elks for a long time. My
military service was was during
the Korean War at Ft. Belvoir,
Virginia, as a Second Lieutenant
in the U.S.Army Corps of

ALEX ZWISSLER '79 says "It's
been a long time. I ran into Jeff
McNear recently and he provided
me with a copy of Nu News. I had
grumbled to him that I had tried to
get on its circulation list a few
times in the past but somehow
things didn't work out. In any
case, I'm belatedly reestablishing
contact. After spending three
years in England in the
telecommunications industry, I
returned to the Bay Area. My
family and I are living in San
Anselmo where our son Chase is
in the third grade and Jimmie Lee
has resumed her nursing career. I
am now Executive Director of the
Fort Mason Foundation which
operates the Fort Mason Center in
San Francisco. I would very much
welcome hearing from old friends

In the years since Nu News ceased to be an undergraduate
newsletter, we have tried to find our place. For the time being, our
mission seems to be to report alumni news, and to this end we appear
to be succeeding. The submission of alumni letters to us for
publication will make it possible for us to continue in this vein until
such time as Nu News becomes an under-graduate publication once
again
However, in our shameless effort to promote the San Francisco
Christmas Luncheon in this issue which goes all over the nation, that
we may appear to be slighting our Fraters who live too far away to
participate, and who may have Teke functions of their own. We want
all of you to know that we want to publicize your own local Teke
events, large or small. Nu News will henceforth be published in
March and November of each year. If these months of publication
coincide with the announce-ment of your own affair, please send us a
news release. We want Nu News to be a publication for all Tekes
everywhere.
