Special to The Sun

St. Mary of the Lakes student Lucey Walton recently got a nice sur-
prise in the mail – a letter from the president. That’s right, Barack
Obama himself reached out to the second-grader. As part of a class
project, Lucey sent the president a copy of Flat Stanley. “Flat Stan-
ley” is a story about a boy who is flattened by a bulletin board. Since
he becomes so thin from the incident, he visits friends by mailing
himself to their homes. The president wrote back to Lucey, reporting
that “‘Flat Stanley’ was engaging, interested, and showed up at the
White House each morning with a pencil in hand, ready to learn.”
