Marlo is more of a hamlet
than village. Sleepy and
quiet, it comes alive as
fishing boats are launched
into the fast flowing and
majestic Snowy River.

The coast road leading
from Marlo hugs the

boardwalks and campgrounds are dotted

Access to Marlo from Orbost is via Marlo
Road which closely follows most of the
Snowy River’s final journey through
grazing land and pockets of rainforest to
the open sea. There are various picnic
spots and river viewing areas along this
route.
Marlo itself is a tranquil seaside resort
and fishing town, offering a number of
holiday houses and caravan parks for
guests. The small commercial centre
features a general store and the historic
Marlo Hotel, which is perched on a hilltop
overlooking the Snowy River, with the
town’s main jetty and boat ramp below.

CURLIP history book
“History is like a giant jig-saw
puzzle, finding the pieces and
putting them together, at the same
time knowing that some pieces
will be a bit broken or maybe even
missing,” said author of the Curlip
history book, Orbost author, May
Leatch.
Since coming to this beautiful part
of Victoria seven years ago, May
has written two local history books.
Her first book was on agricultural
history, titled Barns of the Snowy
River, and featured the unique
slatted barns and huge maize crates
which once dotted the Snowy River
floodplain around Orbost.
“When I finished this book, I knew
that another connecting piece of
the jig saw puzzle was to do with
river transport. Crops which were
stored in the slatted barns and
maize crates had to be taken out
to market somehow and before the
train came to Orbost in 1916, the
river was the lifeline for this remote
region of Victoria.
“This led to the Curlip book, The life
and times of a Snowy River Paddle
Steamer and the family who built
her. Completed in 2008 this book
was published just prior to the
launch of the new Paddle Steamer
Curlip II which now operates on the
Snowy and Brodribb Rivers from
Marlo.
“Although the book focuses on
the building and operation of the
original P S Curlip, it is a family
story of their lives, tragedies and
achievements, intertwined with
the history of early European
settlement around Orbost. The
book encourages people who take
a trip on the present-day P S Curlip
II to wonder at the lives of people
living here 120 years ago and the
changes since,” May said.

Let’s look at the essentials and some of the
factors to consider when making a choice
before we hand over those hard earned
dollars.
PACKS. So many choices, so little time.
Are you a male, female? How often will you
get to use your new pack? Are you going to
walk on well prepared track such as those
at Wilson’s Promontory or go bush bashing
for long periods or short? You need to have
a clear idea of your ultimate goal. Price
can vary from $100 to well over $500, the
latter giving you a tough very durable pack
with a very comfortable harness fitted to
your exact body shape. A lot of hikers end
up choosing a pack size bigger than they
need. They will then often fill it with gear
they really could have left at home.
TENTS. The options with tents are limited
by the size of your wallet. I tend to look for
tents which will suit my needs (sleeping
one, two or three people), will handle where
I tend to hike eg alpine areas, and weights
no more than 1kg to 1.2kg per person. I am
not a big fan of single skin tents. Despite

their claims I find they do not handle
condensation well and are just too dear.
There are less expensive better performing
tents on the market that may be no more
than 100gm to 200gm heavier. The newer
siliconized cordura fabric tents are a good
example. I also try not to sell a $500 tent to
someone who may only use it 3 or 4 times a
year when there is a $200 option available
to do almost the same job.
SLEEPING BAGS. This is where those
general rules mentioned previously do
apply 100%. I always ask customers 3 basic
questions; Where are you going, when are
you going and how? The
answers to these tell me
quite specifically the
best type of bag that is
going to suit your needs
i.e. how warm, light and
compact. You will also
need to have an idea of
the coldest situation you
are likely to be in over
the next 10 to 15 years
and wether the bag is
for a male or female.

GENERALLY females need a bag rated 5
degrees warmer than a male.
COOKING SETS. There are three basic
types of cooking options available to a
hiker. Most are aware of the ever reliable
Trangia cook set having come across
them in their school years. These units use
methylated spirits as their fuel and are a
good option for simple cooking where you
are just rehydrating and warming meals. As
a comparison it usually takes 5 to 8 minutes
to boil a litre of water and perform reasonably
well in alpine conditions. Gas stoves are
a faster option in regards to cooking time
and with their higher
temperatures allow the
hiker to expand their
culinary skills. A litre of
water can usually be
boiled in about 3 minutes.
Their only drawback is
the gas will often fail to
vaporise in extremely
cold conditions making
the unit very inefficient.
The final type is the
multi fuel type of
cooker. There are several good brands of
the market of which MSR is probably the
best known. While multi fuel stove are the
dearest option to buy, and a little fiddly to
use, they are by far the cheapest to run.
They also perform great in all conditions.
Boiling time is 2.5 to 3 minutes.
ALL THE BITS & PIECES. Camping stores
are full of gimmicky gadgets to entice gear
gurus. Some are designed to make that next
outing that much safer, some are designed
to make things that much more comfortable
the rest are there for you to buy for someone
who has almost everything and you have
no idea what to get them. Some however
are essential. A compass, head torch,
waterproof matches, light hike mattress,
hydration bladder or drink bottle, maps
and a good knife all fall into this category.
Less essential items but always good to
have on hand include walking poles, GPS
and EPIRB, and a good length of 3 – 4mm
nylon rope. You can keep adding to these
lists but always remember you have to
carry this all on your back. Apply the KISS
principle (Keep It Smart & Simple) and you
will very rarely go wrong.

a limited preparation, the Carolyn Jones

nearly 20,000, with our distribution partners to
be over 450.

DOWN, THANKYOU TO OUR READERS
Amazingly our Distribution and Readership are
almost equal as we have reduced our returns to
less than 1%. In the April edition we printed and
distributed 15,000 papers and in May collected
76 returned unread papers. This is a credit to
our distribution partners and to our ever growing

quote from George Gershwin sets the tone
for this concert. With music written at a time
which marked the era after World War 1, jazz
became the rage in the US and Europe and
evoked the mood of people across the world.
Gershwin compositions have been used
in numerous films and on television, and
many have become jazz standards that have
been part of the repertoire of jazz musicians,
recorded in numerous variations. Countless

Winter is the time of year when
many people spend the most
time in their homes. It’s colder
and there are gatherings with
friends and family. Winter cleaning
is mostly cold weather or holiday
specific, with a few extras to do while
you’re home on a cold day
Chimneys
Before your first fire, have a
professional chimney sweep. The
job is too difficult to do on your
own, and the risks are great. A
fire in your chimney can destroy
your entire house. Don’t rely
on “cleaning logs” in place of a
chimney sweep. They cannot do
the same job, and they do not
eliminate the risk of a chimney
fire.
If you have a wood stove, you
should also have it professionally
checked. This is the most important
cleaning job you will do all winter.

It’s time to sort through
your pantry (summer and winter),
throwing away whatever has gone
bad or won’t be used. This doesn’t
have to be a big job. Just drag over a
big bin and get started.
Pay attention to “Use By” dates. If the
date hasn’t passed but is coming up
and you’re not going to use the item,
toss it. You should throw away any
cans that are dented or are missing
labels.
Mattresses
Twice a year (summer and winter),
you should clean all of the mattresses
in the house to keep dust mites
under control. Vacuum the top of
the mattress, move the mattress and
vacuum the box springs, then flip the
mattress and vacuum the new top of
the mattress.
For further protection from dust mites,
add an allergenic mattress pad and
wash your sheets in hot water.

Since it’s so cold, the time you spend
on the computer is probably getting
out of hand. It’s fine to spend time on
the computer, but take this opportunity
to clean yours.
Power down, unplug, and start with
the dirtiest parts – your keyboard and
mouse. Turn your keyboard upside
down and dump out any crumbs or
dirt particles. Then use compressed
air to get between the keys. Follow
by wiping your keyboard and mouse
with a damp cloth. Special electronic
cleaners are not usually necessary.
Now open the actual computer unit.
Most units have a screw or two
that have to be removed to open
the side panel. If you don’t know
anything about computers, don’t
touch anything inside. Simply use
compressed air and spray away all
of the dirt and dust. Hold the gun at
least four inches away from cards,
chips, and cords.
