2. (a) We are told that the samples are random, so that assumption holds
true. Anderson-Darling normality test in minitab shows that the
samples are approximately normally distributed.
(b)

H0 = µ1 − µ2 = 0
Ha = µ1 − µ2 < 0

Paired t-test provides a P-value of 0.053. This is just high enough

to reject the null hypothesis using α = 0.05. ⇒ There is sufficient
evidence to claim that the average level of confidence for the group
increased.

3. (a)

H0 : µA − µB = 0
Ha : µA − µB < 0

minitab provides a p-value of 0.047 for all three tested values of al-
pha. With a confidence of 95.0% or 90.0% (ie α = 0.1 or α = 0.5
respectively), we would reject the null hypothesis. However, with a
99.0% confidence interval (i.e for α = 0.01), there would be insuffi-
cient evidence to reject the null hypothesis.
(b) The assumptions we need to make for out results to be usable are
that the samples are random, and that the samples were taken from
normally distributed (or at least approximately normal) populations.
Question states that the subjects were chosen randomly, so that as-
sumption holds true. We do not know if the the data was normally
distributed or not.
4. (a)

H0 : µ1 − µ2 = 0
Ha : µ1 − µ2 6= 0

2
Mann-Whitney test provides a p-value of 0.4173. This is much larger
than the α of 0.05, so there is insufficient evidence to reject the null
hypothesis. There is insufficient evidence to suggest that stopping
smoking effects weight gain.
5. (a)

n1 p1 = 57 n1 q1 = 200688
n2 p2 = 142 n2 q2 = 201087

The samples are sufficiently large for normal approximation to hold.

(b)

H0 : p 1 − p 2 = 0
Ha : p 1 − p 2 < 0

Minitab test for two proportions gives a P-value of 0.00, with a Z

value of 6.04. We reject H0 and conclude that the vaccine reduced
the amount of polio cases
6. (a) Let sample 1 be Murray River data and sample 2 be Murrumbidgee
River data

H0 : µ1 − µ2 = 0
Ha : µ1 − µ2 6= 0

two sample t test (equal vs not equal) in minitab provides a p-value

of 0.124. This is above the alpha used of α = 0.01, so we do not
reject the null hypothesis, and we conclude the two rivers are equally
healthy.
(b)

H0 : µ = 0.025
Ha : µ < 0.025

Tests in minitab show that both rivers are considered healthy (P1 =
0.528, P2 = 0.988)
7.

H0 : µ1 − µ2 = 0
Ha : µ1 − µ2 > 0

Mann-Whitney test in minitab provides a P-value of 0.3567, This is greater

than the alpha used of α = 0.05, so we do not reject the null hypothesis,
and we conclude that there is insufficient evidence to claim that the serum
prolonged life expectancy in late-stage leukemia sufferers.
