POSITION ANNOUNCEMENT

POST DOCTORAL FELLOW – FIELD HYDROLOGY

(Ethiopia)

IWMI seeks to recruit a well qualified Post Doctoral Fellow in Field Hydrology to
participate in a Challenge Program on Water and Food project located in the Nile Basin
that focuses on integrated rainwater management strategies, technologies, institutions and
policies. S/he will work in an inter-disciplinary team that will consider the impact of rain
water management technologies and strategies on catchment hydrology - the downstream
and groundwater impacts as well as evaporation and transpiration – at different locations
within the Nile Basin, with the ultimate aim of evaluating water allocation and water
productivity implications.

The International Water Management Institute (IWMI) is a non-profit, scientific

organization engaged in research and capacity building activities for developing
countries. Our mission is to overcome poverty through the better management of land
and water resources. Working with diverse partners and supported by the Consultative
Group on International Agricultural Research (CGIAR), IWMI seeks to translate its
research findings into actionable recommendations for policymakers, resource managers
and poor rural communities. IWMI is based in Colombo, Sri Lanka and has regional
offices located in 12 countries in Asia and Sub-Saharan Africa.

obtain primary data relating to the impacts of different rainwater management
technologies on hydrological fluxes and water productivity at different locations in the
Nile Basin.

1
Duties and Responsibilities:
• Provide expertise in hydrology with particular experience in hydrological processes in
agricultural fields and how they scale up within river basins.
• Carry out field research that includes:
o The design of the research
o Hydrologic data collection, including the design and installation of water flux
monitoring networks
o Quality control of data
o Analysis, modeling and interpretation of field data
• Communicate results through research reports, journal articles, seminar papers and
other scientific manuscripts as well as through seminars and workshops.

measurements including installation and operation of field
instruments (e.g. weather stations, piezometers, rain gauges, flow
gauges, bowen-ratio, soil moisture equipment etc.).
• Experience of hydro-chemical techniques for evaluating
hydrological flow pathways would be an advantage.
• Experience in the quality control, interpretation and analyses
of field data and modeling hydrological processes.
