IB-Standard Level Mathematics Proficiencies 2010-2011

These proficiencies are based on the IB Standard Level Mathematics syllabus. This course is a two year course.
The number in the right hand column indicates which semester the skills will be formally assessed in. Once a
skill has been formally assessed, it is then considered to be Presumed Knowledge (PK). Since it is imperative
that students retain these skills, presumed knowledge can be assessed at any time.

Topic 1- Algebra
1.1 Sequences and Series 2
a) Recognize and write formulas for arithmetic sequences and series.
b) Find sums of infinite series.
c) Recognize and write formulas for geometric sequences and series.
d) Find sums of finite and infinite geometric series.
e) Use sigma notation.
1.2 Exponents and Logarithms 2
a) Convert between exponential and logarithmic form.
b) Use the laws of exponents to solve equations or simplify expressions.
c) Use the laws of logarithms to solve equations or simplify expressions.
d) Use the change of base formula.

Topic 2- Functions and Equations


2.1 Concept of Functions 1
a) Understand the definition of function and determine whether an equation represents a function.

2.2 Graphing Functions PK
a) Graph a variety functions given their equations.
b) Use a GDC to graph a variety of functions and investigate their key features.
c) Find solutions of equations graphically.
2.3 Transformations of Graphs 1
a) Transform graphs using translations, stretches, and reflections in the axes.
b) Graph and interpret graphs of inverses.
2.4 Reciprocal Functions 1
a) Identify, use, and interpret the reciprocal function and its graph.
2.5 Quadratic Functions PK
a) Recognize, use, and graph quadratic equations in standard form.
b) Identify the axis of symmetry on a parabola.
c) Recognize, use, and graph quadratic equations in vertex form.
d) Recognize, use, and graph quadratic equations in intercept form.
2.6 Quadratic Equations PK
a) Solve quadratic equations using factoring.
b) Solve quadratic equations using the quadratic formula.
c) Use the discriminant to determine the nature of a parabola.

a) Recognize and use the standard form of an exponential function.

Topic 3- Circular Functions and Trigonometry


3.1 Circles 1

3.2 Definitions of Trigonometric Functions 1
a) Define and name values of cos x and sin x in terms of the unit circle.
b) Define tangent as sine/cosine.
c) Use and apply the Pythagorean identity of sine and cosine to solve problems.
3.3 Double Angle Formulae 1
a) Use and apply the double angle formulae for sine and cosine to solve problems.
3.4 Circular Functions 1
a) Graph sine, cosine, and tangent.
b) Identify the domain and range and describe the period of sine, cosine, and tangent graphs.

a) Add, subtract, and multiply matrices by a scalar.
b) Multiply matrices.
c) Find the identity and zero matrices of a matrix.
4.3 Determinants 2
a) Find the determinant of a square matrix.
b) Find the inverse of a 2x2 matrix by hand.
c) Determine whether a matrix has an inverse and find the inverse using a GDC.
4.4 Solve Systems of Linear Equations PK
a) Solve systems of linear equations using inverse matrices.

Topic 5- Vectors
5.1 Basics of Two and Three Dimensional Vectors 2
a) Use and apply vectors as Displacement vectors
b) Use and apply Components of a vector and column representation of vectors
c) Use and apply the algebra and geometry of vectors: the sum and difference vectors; the zero vector,
the vector-v ; multiplication by a scalar, kv ; magnitude of a vector, v ; unit vectors; base vectors i, j,
and k; and position vectors
5.2 Dot Product 2
a) Use and apply the scalar product to find Perpendicular and Parallel vectors
b) Find angles between vectors using the dot product.
5.3 Vector Equations of Lines 2
a) Represent and apply vector equations of lines.
b) Find the angle between two lines
c) Distinguish between coincident and parallel lines
d) Find points of intersections of lines in space

Topic 6- Statistics and Probabilities


6.1 Descriptive Statistics 4
a) Use and apply the concepts of population, sample, random sample and frequency distribution of
discrete and continuous data.
b) Interpret and present data (continuous and discrete): frequency tables and diagrams, box and
whisker plots.
c) Use and interpret grouped data: mid-interval values, interval width, upper and lower interval
boundaries, and frequency histograms.
d) Find and interpret measures of central tendency and spread: mean, median, mode, quartiles,
percentiles, range, interquartile range, variance and standard deviation.
e) Use cumulative frequency and its graphs to find median, quartiles and percentiles.
6.2 Basic Probability 2
a) Use and apply the concepts of trial, outcome, equally likely outcomes, sample space, event,
probability of an event and complementary events.
b) Use and apply the formula for combined events and the concept of mutually exclusive events
c) Use and apply the definitions of conditional probability and independent events.
d) Use Venn diagrams, tree diagrams and tables of outcomes to solve problems.
6.3 Modeling Data 4
a) Use and apply the concepts of discrete random variables and their probability distributions, and
expected value for discrete data.

c) Use and apply the concept of normal distribution and its properties; and find normal probabilities.

Topic 7- Calculus
7.1A Limits 3
a) Use and apply the concepts of limit and convergence.
b) Evaluate limits algebraically and graphically.
c) Use limits theorems to solve problems and/or prove statements.
d) Use the definition of continuity to solve problems and/or prove statements.
e) Use the Intermediate Value Theorem to solve problems and/or prove statements.
f) Find limits of indeterminant forms using the L’Hospital’s rule.*
7.1B Derivatives 3
a) Use and apply the definition of derivative as a function and its notation
b) Find the derivative of the power (xn), sine, cosine, tangent, ex, lnx and other functions.
c) Interpret and apply derivatives as gradient functions and as rate of change to find equations of
tangents and normals and to identify increasing and decreasing functions
7.2 Derivatives of Composite functions, and of a product or quotient of two functions and 2nd derivatives 3
a) Find the derivatives of more complex functions (Six trigonometric functions and their inverses)
b) Use and apply the chain rule to find the derivative of composite functions.

a) Find the indefinite integral of the power (xn), the six trigonometric functions, ex, 1/x and other
functions.
b) Find the indefinite integral of the composites of the power (xn), sine, cosine, tangent, ex, 1/x and
other functions with a linear function.
c) Find a particular solution to a differential equation given a boundary or initial condition.
7.5 Definite Integrals 3
a) Use and apply the concept of a definite integral to find the area under a curve or the area between
two curves.
b) Use and apply the concept of a definite integral to the find the volume of solids/revolutions.
c) Use and apply the Mean Value Theorem.
7.6 Kinematic(motion) Problems 3
a) Solve kinematic(motion) problems involving displacement, velocity and acceleration
7.7 Calculus and Graphical Behavior of Functions 4
a) Use and apply the concepts of first and second derivative to analyze end behavior, critical points
and related features of graphs of functions. Use terms like local and global maximums and
minimums, asymptotes, tangents, normals, concavity, points of inflection, plateau, etc.
b) Use the second derivative test to distinguish between maxima and minima.
