PENTECOST SUNDAY June 12, 2011 DOMINGO DE PENTECOSTES

And suddenly there came from the sky a noise like a strong driving wind, and it filled the entire house in which they were. Then there appeared to them tongues as of fire. (Acts 2:1-3)

From The Pastors Desk

Dear Parish Family, Peace and all good! And Happy Birthday! By tradition, we celebrate Pentecost Sundaythe feast of the descent of the Holy Spirit upon the disciples of Jesusas the birthday of the Church. And our readings this weekend certainly do give us ample reason for celebration. The first reading from the Acts of the Apostles (Acts 2: 111), also called the gospel of the Holy Spirit, speaks to us from the perspective of an eyewitness account. The city of Jerusalem is abuzz and aflame. The followers of Jesus, secreted away for more than six weeks following the Death and Resurrection of the Lord, have emerged from their hiding places. They have been transformed from 97-pound spiritual weaklings into men and women filled with faith, confidence, and passion. They are now prepared to tell the entire worldin each and every languageof the Good News of the coming of Jesus Christ. Not only do they speak in tongues, but they are understood by the speakers of every tongue. The very brief, yet poignant Gospel of John (20:19-23) provides the basis for this unfathomable new confidence. Jesus Himself comes to His apostles and confers upon them the Breath of His own Spirit, empowering them to be agents of peace and reconciliationin His Namefor all the world. We are not just the spiritual descendents of this first Pentecost, we are participants in it as well. Jesus gives us His Spirit to live his Gospel and to preach to all the world the Good News by the example of our lives. It is also customary for us as Catholics to celebrate the unity and diversity of our faith community. When asked how he would describe the Catholic Church, the great Irish writer James Joyce replied: Here comes everybody! Here at Mission San Luis Rey, we try to acknowledge and celebrate the tremendous gifts of the presence of everybody-- each and every person, each and every community: from the English-speaking community to the Latino community; from the Samoans to the Filipinos; from the Guamanians to the Vietnamese, the Chinese, the Italians, the Irish, the Portuguese, the French and their descendants. Not to mention our military families. And dont forget the Lithuanians who come here each Advent to

celebrate the holidays. Did I leave anyone out? I sure hope not. Indeed, were proud to say: Here comes everybody!

Elsewhere in the Parish:

Speaking of the celebration of our diversity, we welcome all of our brothers and sisters from the Native American community who are here this weekend to celebrate the Annual Indian Pow-Wow at the Old Mission. We give thanks to the Lord for their tremendous gifts of the Spirit and for the ways in which they share with us the richness of Native American culture and traditions. Special thanks to the members of the Luiseno Bandthe native people of this area and their descendentswhose presence and witness predates the Mission itself. Many thanks to all who helped to make our Ministry Appreciation Picnic this past weekend such a great success! More than 600 (thats correct--- 600!) parishioners gathered to celebrate the gifts of ministry given to us here at Mission San Luis Rey. Folks representing the more than 60 active ministries came together for food, fellowship and fun. Thank you all for responding so generously to Gods call to service. And if you are looking for a way to serve, we welcome you. Call the Parish Office and let us know. Well try to help you find the ministry that will best fit your talents and the needs of our growing parish. Welcome to Franciscan friars Mike Minton and Victor Vega, who will be staying with us this summer. Brother Mike will be working here at the Parish, while Brother Victor will be stationed at the Old Mission. Also, I am pleased to announce that two men from the area will be entering the Franciscan community at our postulancy house in Portland, Oregon this September. Mark Beglin, a member of our Covenant Program, worked and lived at the Mission for a year before moving to the Bay Area. Garrett Collins hails from San Marcos close by. Both men have been participating in our ongoing prayer and discernment group. If you are a single Catholic man, 25-50 years of age, and would like to know more about our Franciscan way of life, feel free to contact Frs. Adrian, Luis, or myself. God bless,

Fr. Chuck

MEDIA/BOOK OF THE WEEK: A New Pentecost?

by Leon Joseph Cardinal Suenens To those who at this moment are distressed because they cannot recognizein the confusion and the changes of today ---the Church of their childhood or even that of yesterday, this book offers a message: be of courage, the power of the Holy Spirit is at work deep within the heart of His Church, breathing into it a fresh youthfulness. It is the Spirit Who is our living hope for the future. This is what the first Pentecost was about. And this is what Pentecost in 2011 is still about. Cardinal Suenens book is a deeply searching and inspiring inquiry into the role being played in the Church by the Holy Spirit. Suffering is the seed of life, and the Church never has greater cause to hope than when its sufferings are greatest. At these moments, history has shown that the Spirit releases a gulfstream of graces through the witnesses of the presence of the Spirit within the Church . . . witnesses such as Pope John 23rd & Pope Paul 6th. In his book, Cardinal Suenens describes and justifies this expectation of supernatural graces (charisms) that can mark a providential hour in the history of the Church. Come and rediscover the real meaning of Pentecost alive in our midst today.

Del Escritorio del Prroco

Querida Familia Parroquial,
Paz y todo bien! Y Feliz cumpleaos! Dej fuera a alguien?
