What The Episcopal Church Believes Many times we are asked what our Episcopal Church believes. We know that we believe in God, the Creeds and Jesus Christ, for we express that every Sunday. We also remember that the Anglican Church (our Mother Church in England) was founded to be a Church with pray and worship at its core. Yet, there are several other beliefs; some similar to other churches today and some Episcopal.

We believe the work of the Church is to continue the ministry of Jesus. We are to tell the story of Gods love for all people. The Church exists to care for one another, especially the sick, poor, hungry, widowed, orphaned and naked. The Church exists to invite others into a relationship with Jesus and the companionship of the Church as part of their journey. We consider all baptized persons to be members of Gods community, and we welcome them. We are an inclusive Church that resists classifying or categorizing the people of God. We know we are not a showcase for saints. We are a Church that believes in the need for ongoing growth and maturity in our spirituality. We are a Church that prays that the good work we begin here will continue as we move from strength to strength in the Heavenly Kingdom. Continued on Page 4

Changing Seasons
What The Episcopal Church Believes Continued from Page 1 We believe we see Gods hand at work in the past and rejoice in Gods goodness. We believe in the future and celebrate heaven as our destiny; however, we do not mourn the past or only focus on the future at the expense of celebrating the goodness of the present. Yes, we do celebrate! We are a Church that sings, All Things Bright and Beautiful All Creatures Great and Small All Things Wise and Wonderful The Lord God Made Them All. Hymn 405. We are a Church that believes in God Almighty, Jesus Christ his Son, the Holy Spirit, the Communion of Saints, the sanctity of all mankind, the beauty of the universe and the Life Everlasting. LeB I especially thank the Rev. Dennis Maynard for his talks and book, Those Episkopols, which we use in our St. Johns Membership Classes.

split from Roman administration of the church, when the Eastern Orthodox church and the Roman split apart. The conict of authority in England between church and state certainly dates back to the arrival of Augustine, and has simmered for many centuries. The murder of Thomas a Becket was one of the more famous episodes of this conict. The Magna Carta, signed by King John in 1215, contains 63 points; the very rst point is a declaration that the English church is independent of its government.. Church History
The name "Anglican" means "of England", but the Anglican church exists worldwide. It began in the sixth century in England, when Pope Gregory the Great sent St. Augustine to Britain to bring a more disciplined Apostolic succession to the Celtic Christians. The Anglican Church evolved as part of the Roman church, but the Celtic inuence was folded back into the Roman portion of the church in many ways, perhaps most notably by Charlemagne's tutor Aidan. The Anglican church was spread worldwide rst by English colonization and then by Englishspeaking missionaries. The Anglican church, although it has apostolic succession, is separate from the Roman church. The history of Christianity has produced numerous notable separations. In 1054 came the rst major

A luncheon followed the ceremony. The program helped to remind us of the sacrices made by all of our service men and women and their families. A perfect way to celebrate the Memorial Day holiday.

The Senior Wardens Message

School is out, summer is here, and St. Johns is rolling along. We have a busy June coming up and we are making great progress!! First and foremost, Eric is graduaAng from IONA the weekend of June 11th. Many parishioners are going to aHend his graduaAon ceremony and we need to show Eric our support. Also, on Saturday, June 18th Eric will be formally ordained as a Deacon. This ceremony will occur at Christ Church Cathedral in Houston. We are very proud of Eric and this major accomplishment!! We have discussed the importance of our acAons in insuring the future of St. Johns. Obviously, one key factor in the success of a church is a reliable, steady, and engaged clergy. I have enjoyed working with Eric over the past couple of years because he has a great deal of business knowledge, real-world experience, and a passion for serving God. With Eric, St. Johns will have a reliable, steady and engaged priest, who will act with the best interest of our church in mind and in heart. God willing, we will have OUR priest for many years to come! Please join me in congratulaAng Eric on his graduaAon!! Invite a friend, co-worker or someone in need to church! God Bless, Brian Owen, Senior Warden
