State of Vermont } On the 7th day of August AD 1832 personally appeared before Silas H County of Addison } Jenison one of the Judges of Addison County Court Solomon Naughton a resident of Shoreham in the County of Addison and State of Vermont aged Eighty one years and upward & who being first duly sworn according to Law doth on his oath make the following dedication in order to obtain the benefits of the act of Congress passed June 7th 1832 that he entered the Service of the United States under the following named officers and Service as herein stated (viz) In the fore part of the summer of 1776 he the said Solomon Naughton volunteered in the Capt Bostwick Company in Colo Whitings Regiment in the Militia of the State of New York at New Canaan in the State of New York where he lived and that he marched from New Canaan [-?-] to Albany from thence to Schenectady and from thence to Johnstown and from thence to Fort Herkimer and was out on sd tours about one month according to his best recollection and went for the purpose of driving off the Indians and Tories and that they on [-?-] Tours succeeded in driving the Tories and Indians and took some prisoners while at Albany on sd Tour he the said Solomon Naughton saw a Tory hung who had been taken as a spy but he does not recall the name of the said Toryand that after said Tour he returned home to New Canaan aforesaid, and that soon after he returned home he again volunteered into the service of the United States into Capt Bostwick Company in Colo Whiting Regiment and marched from New Canaan aforesaid to Albany, from thence to Stone Roby [a.k.a. Stone Arabia, now Palatine1] and was there in the battle with the Tories and Indians and that they retreated before our troops we were under the Command of Gen Van Rensellear and that he the said Solomon Naughton was out on said Tour about four weeks according to his best recollection and then returned home to New Canaan aforesaid and that in the fall of the year 1776 he again volunteered into Capt Bostwicks Company in Colo Whitings Regiment aforesaid and marched from New Canaan aforesaid to Fort George at the head of lake George in the State of New York for the purpose of opposing the British then marching as it was expected from Canada under Gen Burgoyne and after staying a[t] Fort George about a week and lerning [sic] that the British troops had given up there [sic] expedition our troops had orders to return home and we marched as far as our way home as Still Water and there heard that Fort Schuyler was besieged we were then ordered to mar[ch] to that place but the next day lerning [sic] tha[t] the report was incorrect we were ordered to return home and did return home to New Canaan aforesaid and that he the said Solomon Naughton was out on said Tour about four weeks according to the best of his recollection and belief that Gen Schuler was his Commanding General and that in the spring of the year 1777 in the month of May according to his best recollection he the said Solomon Naughton again volunteered into Capt Bostwick Company aforesaid in Colo Whitings Regiment and marched from New Cannan aforesaid to Fort George aforesaid for the purpose of moving the Military Stores and to oppose the march of Burgoynes Army then marching or about to march from Canada and that they moved the Military Stores from Fort George that is what could be [conveniently?] and that while [by?] in the march of Burgoyne Army which could not be moved was [d---ged?] [such?] as fields of wheat hay grass &c and that we were ordered by the Indians and Burgoyne troops to Still Water and then made a standGen Schuyler was the Commanding Generaland that he the said Solomon Naughton was at the Battle of Still Water and at Saratoga and [East or last?] at the surrender of Burgoyne he the said Solomon Naughton was taken sick he then left Saratoga and returned home and that he the said Solomon Naughton was out on said last tour about five months as he clearly believes according to2 the best of his recollectionthat he resided at New Canaan in the State of New York during the Revolutionary War and that soon after the close of the War he moved to Poultney in the State of Vermont and from thence to Shoreham aforesaid where he now resides and has resided for upwards of nine years past that he has no documentary evidence and that he knows of no person whose testimony he can http://montgomery.nygenweb.net/palatine/stonearhistory.html The following was written between two lines of text at this point: that he was born at Farmington in Connecticut and he has been [infirm?] & has no [used?] of his [eye?]

procure who can testify to his services He hereby relinquishes every claim whatever to a pension or annuity except the present and declares that his name is not on the pension roll of the agency or any state his Sworn to and subscribed the day } Salomon X Naughton and year aforesaid before me } mark Silas H Jenison Judge of Addison County Court We Zacheus Barnum and Benjamin Tower residing in the Town of Shoreham in the County of Addison and State of Vermont hereby Certify that we are well acquainted with Solomon Naughton who has subscribed and sworn to the above declaration that we believe him to be Eighty one years of age, that he is reputed and beleived in the neighborhood where he resides to have been a soldier of the revolution and that we concur in that opinion Sworn and Subscribed the day and year aforesaid Benjamin Tower Zacheus Barnum

before me Silas H Jenison Judge of Addison County Court and the said Silas H Jenison Judge of Addison County Court as aforesaid dos [sic] hereby declare his opinion after the investigation of the matter and after putting the interrogations prescribed by the War Department that the above applicant was a revolutionary soldier and served as he states and the said Silas H Jenison Judge as aforesaid further certifies that it appears to him that Zacheus Barnum and Benjamin Tower who have signed the foregoing certificate and also from his personal acquaintance with them and who are residents in the Town of Shoreham in the County of Addison aforesaid that they are credible persons and that their statements is entitled to credit. Silas H Jenison Judge of Addison County Court And the said Silas H Jenison Judge aforesaid further certifies that the sd Solomon Naughton from his advanced age and infirm state of health that he is unable to attend court to make his declaration Silas H Jenison Judge of Addison County Court I Silas H Jenison Judge of Addison County Court do hereby certify that the foregoing contained the original proceedings of the said Judge in the matter of the application of Solomon Naughton for a pension In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand this 7th day of August AD 1832 Silas H Jenison Judge of Addison County Court State of Vermont } Addison County ss } I Samuel Swift Clerk of the County Court for the said County do hereby certify that Silas H Jenison before whom the foregoing proceedings were had and who has certified the same is Judge of said Court and and [sic] his name in the several places where the same is subscribed thereto is his own signature.
