GENERAL DATA The purpose of the following questions is to acquaint us with your Group and to give us a general understanding of the work that is performed by your Group and to indicate the most logical arrangement of people and equipment within your area. 1. Briefly summarize the overall objectives and activities of your Group.
The Cardiology Service provides state-of-the-art diagnostic and treatment facilities for all species with cardiovascular disease. We see referred patients and and equal number of in-house patients. We train residents in the specialty and 4th year students on a rotating basis. Our overall aim is top-quality patient / client care. Our main activities include: (1) patient receiving and examinations, (2) in-house patient consultation examinations, (3) specialized cardiac studies, including ECG, echocardiagraphy, cardiac cath / angiography, ambulatory ECG, cardiac biopsy, etc., (4) residency training (journal club, case reviews, seminars, etc.), (5) student training in rounds and daily patient care, and (6) referral and public information communications. We also obtain clinical sudies for research pruposes. Our main deficiency is lack of a clinical cardiac laboratory for patients (echo, etc.). Addition of such a contiguous room would greatly improve our efficiency.

3.

Briefly describe or diagram the flow of work through your Group.

We spend most of our clinical time moving between our conference room (VM-II Rm. 175), exam room 14 (VMTH Room 2004), small animal radiology (VMTH, west end) and the current ultrasound, cardiac cath / angiography area (VM-II Rooms 111 & 103). We examine patients (small animal) mainly in Exam Room 14, and then move to VMII for ultrasound. This has been a major inconvenience for years and makes us extremely inefficient due to the constant movement back and forth between VMTH and VM-II. Addition of our own ultrasound will help, but we urgently need a clinical lab room for all of our regular non-vasive diagnostic studies.

4. Briefly describe the relationship of your Group to other Groups in the Department and the relationship with Groups at Iowa State University.
We interact most often with (1) small animal radiolgy, (2) the ultrasound group, (3) other service groups by consultation (equine medicine, small animal medicine, etc.). An efficient relationship would be best served by proximity of our exam room, conference room and a clinical lab room close to each other and in the same general area as the main body of the hospital (for consultations) and small animal radiology. In addition, it should allow for easy movement of equipment between our clinical lab and the large animal exam rooms and the angiography / cardiac cath lab (VM-II Room 111).

5.

Does your Group fluctuate in size (staff or workload) on a seasonal or project basis? If so, please describe.
Group size is stable except for some fluctuations in student numbers and occasional addition of visitors.

5. Comments and questions (include additional pages of comments, descriptions or diagrams if needed):
I want to emphasize our urgent need for space that combines an examination / consultation / client accessible area with a contiguous clinical lab in which we can perform multiple types of studies (ECG, phonocardiography, echocardiography, initial therapy, blood pressure recording, etc.). Addition of cardiac echo to our area has made it extremely crowded in Room 2004.
