9th June, 2011

It is great to see so many students getting involved in our school Merit Programme, we have many Cultural events and activities taking place at the moment and students involved will gain Cultural Merit Points. Tomorrow we will be holding the finals of our annual Lip Sync Competition in the school hall from 9.00am. Tomorrow evening and Saturday evening students from our Kapa Haka, Choir and our school Rock Bands will be performing in the Variety Show at the Morrinsville Little Theatre. We have also had dozens of students put their names forward for a major role in our 2011 Production Lady Pirates Of The Caribbean and auditions have begun.

MIS 2011 Sports Camp Team

From 22nd-26th August our school will take part in the annual Coast to Coast Sports Camp held at Totara Springs. Students selected must demonstrate all-round sporting skills as well as be coachable, have good sportsmanship, commitment, reliability and a school-wide positive attitude. This is a fantastic opportunity for students to compete in a huge range of team and individual sporting codes, and the Year 8 students selected are looking forward to an action packed week away with events being held daily from after breakfast until approximately 9.30pm. This is always a week of very tough competition against schools from around the top half of the North Island and we always compete very well as a school. Last year MIS finished 1st over-all in the following events: Girls Hockey, Boys Indoor Hockey, Touch, Tennis, Croquet, Darts, Scramball, Kayaking and Swimming. MIS finished 2nd over-all in the following: Netball, Rugby, Boys Hockey, Girls Table Tennis, Chess, Cross Country, Athletics and Triathlon. Students involved will have the opportunity to discuss which teams and sporting codes they will compete in with the teachers in charge of sport (Mrs Soffe & Miss Clark) closer to the time. We are currently looking for sponsorship to help bring the cost of camp down. The names of major sponsors will be printed on our students camp tshirts. Students are always very proud to represent our school at Sports Camp and the t-shirts provide great advertising for sponsors as they are worn for years to come. Please contact the school if you can help in any waythanks!

Thursday Senior Netball

Congratulations to MIS Red netball team for being promoted to the Senior netball competition played on Thursday nights. This season MIS 8A and MIS 7A are both in Senior B Reserve grade and MIS 8B and MIS Red are both in the Senior C grade. This is the first time Morrinsville Intermediate has had four teams playing in the Senior Competition.

Saturday Junior Netball

Below are a few notices that were discussed at the last Junior Netball Meeting that need to be brought to everyones attention. To help award the Fair Play trophies at the end of the season, a point system has been introduced, from 1 5 (5 being good). Please advise teams that their umpires are to mark down the Fairplay Marks on the scorecards each week for the opposing team. There will be notes on the cards to remind them. There has been a complaint about children swearing and behaving badly at the courts. This is not acceptable behaviour by children or parents so please remember the Fair Play rules.

Winter Illness
With the winter months upon us, we are starting to see an increase in student absences due to illness. We are asking for families to help by reminding children about good handwashing and the use of tissues for runny noses, coughing etc. The following is information from the Regional Public Health Service: The best thing to do to stop the spread of any type of influenza virus is to: Stay at home and away from others if you are sick. Cover your coughs and sneezes with a tissue. Put used tissues in a rubbish bin. Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouthgerms spread that way. Be careful to wash hands often with soap and dry them thoroughlyhand hygiene is critical; keep to the 20/20 rule 20 seconds washing and 20 seconds drying. Thank you for your support and remember to phone the school office before 9.15am if your child is away from school.

All the best to all of our teams for the rest of the season!
