shows henry a painting he did henry wants him to put in an exhibit basil says no cause it is too personal painting of dorian gray - guy that basil met at a party - was basils sole inspiration -dorian gray shows up - lord henry wants basil to introduce him Chapter 2 - basil introduces henry to dorian - dorian wants henry to stay and talk - lord henry talks to dorian in the garden - praises him - says live life to the fullest - basil calls them inside and shows them the portrait - dorian doesnt life it cause of what henry told him before - basil tries to comfort him, dorian doesnt want him too - basil tries to destroy painting and then dorian says that he likes it. - basil gives it to dorian as a gift - dorian and henry go to the theater in that evening Chapter 3 - lord henry goes to visit uncle, lord fermor - henry asks uncle about dorians past - fermor says dorian comes from unhappy family - mom eloped with soldier - dorians dad was killed by fatherinlaw right before dorian was born - mom died soon after - he was then raised by a tyrant - lord henry is inspired by this story - lord henry goes to aunts home for dinner w/ other upper class (dorian was ther e) - henry goes on about the virtues of selfishness and self-indulgence. - guests are appalled, but charmed cause be is clever and w itty - dorian was fasinated and left with lord henry and abandons his plans with basi l Chapter 4 - one month later - dorian waiting for guest in lord henrys house with his wife victora - talking about music - henry arrives, dorian tells him that he is in love with Sibyl Vane, actress in shakespeare play - met her at a sketchy playhouse in the slums - sibyl thought dorian was prince charming - lord henry goes to sibyls romeo and juliet the next night with basil and doria n - dorian received the painting from basil a few days earlier - henry goes for dinner and when he gets home he finds a telegram from dorian sa ying he is engaged to be married Chapter 5

- at sibyl's house - mrs. vane doesnt like that they are getting married - worried about dorians intentions - hopes that she will benefit from his $ - sibyls brother, james, is a sailor and he is leaving on a trip and warns mom t o watch dorian - james goes on walk with sibyl and talks about dorian and his trip - james is very worried about leaving sibyl - james tells dorian that if he does anything to sibyl he will kill her Chapter 6 - over dinner lord henry tells basil about dorians plans to marry sibyl - basil doesnt like that he is marring someone that is under his social level - dorian comes in and tells them about how much he loves sibyl and how lord henr y was wrong about selfishness Chapter 7 they are at sibyls play - sibyls acting is horrible and worsens - dorian is heartbroken - dorian goes to talk to sibyl - sibyl says that it is harder to act with fake emotions with real emotions - because of the lack of emotion, she decides her career on stage is over - dorian realized that he is in love with her acting, not her - breaks up with sibyl and wishes never to see her again - dorian goes back home and looks at basils painting and realizes it look cruele r - suddenly overcomes shame of sibyl and decides to amend with sibyl in morning Chapter 8 - dorian wakes up and is astonished that the painting has changed. - looks for rational reason - lord henry arrives,tells him that sibyl committed suicide the night before - dorian is stunned and wants to go to the police - henry tells dorian not to tell them about his part - henry makes dorian look on the bright side and makes him feel better - henry and dorian go to the opera at night Chapter 9 - basil comes to say sorry to dorian - dorian blows off sibyl and tries to forget about him - dorian wants basil to paint a picture of sibyl so he can remember her - dorian hides his portrait Chapter 10 - dorian hides the portrait in the schoolroom - he reads a book that henry sent him, with a newspaper article about sibyl - "the yellow book" - dorian has dinner with henry and tells him that he likes the book Chapter 11 - dorian is obsessed with the yellow book and orders 12 copies in different colo urs for different moods - continues to watch his portrait age and deteriorate - begins to act kind of weird Chapter 12 - 38th birthday - dorian runs into basil at night - tries to walk pass and pretend not to

see him

- basil calls him over - basil is going on a vacation to paris but wanted to tell dorian about the bad rumors going around about him - basil is upset that they arent friends anymore - says that he doesnt even know dorian anymore - dorian offers to show basil his diary which will show basil his soul and answe r all his questions Chapter 13 - Dorian take basil to see the painting. - the painting has become hideous - basil doesnt know how this happened - dorian tells him that it was henry - dorian feels hatred and grabs a knife and stabs basil repeatedly - dorian hides his belonging and makes it look like he just came in the house Chapter 14 - dorian calls friend who is a scientist - alan campbell - campbell comes and dorian asks for his help with disposing the body - he says no - dorian tells him that he killed him - dorian blackmails him with a secret - campbell says ok - dorian goes to cover the painting and sees blood on the hand - campbell leaves that night and the body is gone Chapter 15 nothing really Chapter 16 - dorian takes bus to london - when he gets off he runs into james vane (sibyls brother) and he holds him at gunpoint - end up letting him go Chapter 17 -Dorian gas lord henry, duchess of monmouth and her husband over for dinner - Dorian faints after seeing james vanes face in the window Chapter 18 - next day dorian wont leave house as he is scared of james vane - 3rd day after, dorian leaves house - dorian goes shooting with others at the park - dorian shoots, and hits a man by accident - man dies instantly - he finds out later that it was james vane that he killed, feels safe again Chapter 19 nothing Chapter 20 -end with servants coming in and the painting looking young and beautiful with d orian dead on the ground - stabbed himself
