Long time ago, the physical modification in the body in response to stress were an
essential adaptation to cope with environmental threats. In our days, the stress response can be
raising levels of achievements during critical events such as sports activities, important and
stressful events, like singer or dancing in public for example. If the stress persists at a low level,
however, all the organs of the body responsible for stress (brain, heart, lungs, blood vessels and
muscles) become non-stop over-activated or under-activated. This may produce physical or
psychological damage for long time. In some cases, acute stress can also be harmful.
Scientists' studies suggest that the inability to cope with stress is associated with
depression or social phobia, such as public speaking. In one study, two-thirds of those who
experienced stressful situations had a much higher risk of getting depression in a month. Some
evidence suggests that when repeated stress occurs, normal levels of serotonin (these are stress-
responsive hormones), the nerve chemical that is critical for good health.
Stress reduces the quality of life (health problems occur) by reducing feelings of pleasure
and fulfillment, and relationships are often affected. However, some stress can be good. For
example, although some research has suggested that stress may be a cause for suicide, those with
moderate levels of stress have the lowest risk in such cases.
