WORLD-MOBILE IN YOUR HAND

ABSTRACT Mobile technology has evolved a great deal and the end of the 20th century has seen the dawn of the technology convergence. The most startling fact is the number of Mobile Phone Subscribers in India, reached 584 Million in March 2010 an increase by 48.98% from the previous year. In April 2010, it became 601 Million. The most plausible scenario is that mobile phones will slowly turn into tiny, ultra-portable computers, able to carry out a huge array of functions besides voice communication. INTRODUCTION The days from when up gradation of technology was a dream to the present day where up gradation is almost a habit, indeed, technology has a come a long way. The world is getting smaller; technology is making sure that it makes the world to the infinitesima l with the most advanced technology embedded within it. Gone are those days where mediums of single pedestal of innovation, the mobile. Talk about radio, television, phone, photography, business, information access, internet etc; everything is now possible with a mere 0.4 oz gadget. Mobile telephony has evolved a great deal since the beginning of the GSM standard. The extra function of the mobile has changed its services from just being voice centric to now being data centric. Business phones have ensured that one has his office with him when on the move and that too at the tip of his finger. The mobile technology enables banks to offer services for their customers such as doing funds transfer while travelling, receiving online updates of stock price or even performing stock trading while being stuck in traffic. Smartphones and 3G connectivity provide some capabilities that older text message-only phones do not. Interactions within mobile social networks are not limited to exchanging simple text messages on a 1-to-1 basis (SMS) but are constantly evolving towards the sophisticated interactions of Sri Krishna International Research & Educational Consortium http://www.skirec.com - 17 -

Internet virtual communities. Mobile convergence is here to get even better and there seems no stop to it. Right from regulating switches to the phone acting as a personal identity card and also the world. EVOLUTION OF MOBILE TECHNOLOGY 1ST GENERATION (1G) The First commercial launch of 1G was made in 1979AD by NET in Tokyo, Japan. In 1981AD mobile phones were launched by NMT in Denmark, Finland, Norway & Sweden. The type of communication was analogue telecommunication, which supported Voice Communication only. 2ND GENERATION (2G) The 2nd Generation gave rise to a new era in mobile communication, with the advent of hand held mobile devices becoming common. It paved to systems like GSM, CDMA, TDMA, in which along with voice, data communication also could be done. The first GSM Network started to operate in 1991AD at Radiolinja, Finland. The Short Messaging Services began and enjoyed a wide market as it was much cheaper than a voice call, and the communication was clear and crisp. 3RD GENERATION (3G) The 3G network has completely brought about a transformation in mobile technology. It saw the emergence of seamless transmission of data and voice, through the concept of packet switching. The first Network started to operate in 2001AD at Tokyo, Japan by NTT DoCoMo.

we are able to capture moments at the very instance it occurs allowing us to treasure them forever. Mobiles these days enrich this sentiment too. The first mobile camera phone was developed by Sharp in 2000 and was introduced into the market of Japan. The advancement in digital photography led to the incorporation of the 12 megapixel digital cameras into mobiles. Mr. Anssi Vanjoki, Ex Vice President at Nokia stated "They will in the very near future revolutionize the market for system cameras," & that said "there will be no need to carry around those heavy lenses." The recent years, a trend to use mobile phones for photography has been observed in lieu of Digital Cameras, as they work as a convenient tool to capture images on the move, and thus revolutionizing photography all together. CORPORATE The time has come when the corporate has introduced the pattern of working from home and office as well as on the go. The need has given rise to an essential use of mobile as the sole medium of communication. The mobile today enables encrypted email access in mobiles like Blackberry. The power to make documents and presentations on the palm by use of Office Applications is possible due to the invention of Androids and Symbian phones. 3G phones have enabled Video Conferences while on the move. The mobiles also have multiple planner application which helps us to plan and have categorical reminders. It supports as a personal assistant that keeps track of everything. Some key features used are appointment planners, financial planners, diet planners, medication reminders, birthday reminders, meetings etc. The wider availability of high-speed wireless communication services will change the entire mobile experience; the only challenge is for the service providers to reach up to the expectation of the user. BUSINESS Business on mobile is the emerging concept, where mobile phones are being used extensively for M Commerce and Banking Services. According to Gartner by end of 2013, 12.5% of E-commerce transactions will be through mobiles. "Because of the improving browser experiences on smartphones, mobile commerce and transaction execution are set to increase rapidly," said research vice president at Gartner. Mobile banking is used for performing banking related operations like balance enquiry, bill pay, third party a/c transfer etc. via mobile phones. The mobile provides these services in three modes, namely Message-based Mobile Banking, Mobile Browsers and Java Application Based. A study of Celnet, showed that 35% of online baking was done through mobile phones in 2010. MOBILE VALUE ADDED SERVICES Mobile Applications and Value Added Services have given an unending uses to a Mobile. To name a few applications, Radio, Mp3 player, GPS Navigations, Social Networking etc.

Smartphone Sales in the third quarter of 2010 showed a record of more than 81 million communication devices based on open operating systems. The benefits of a touch screen are: Novel and intuitive interaction; Interaction simplicity, such as when navigating a photo album; and Simplified Web browsing. In other words, smartphones with a touch screen offer user experience quite similar to the one over PCs. As business users are the primary users of smartphones, giving PC-like usability to smartphones turned out to be a big add-on. Touch screens have influenced evolution of smartphones for business use. The key to attracting a larger mass of customers to smartphones is to offer more exciting software application in addition to making the devices more appealing catering to a broader customer base.

By 2014, 30% of analytic applications will use proactive, predictive and forecasting capabilities. Mobile device sales in India are forecast to reach 138.6 million in 2010, an increase of 18.5% over 2009 sales of 117 million units, according to Gartner, Inc. The mobile handset market is expected to show steady growth through 2014 when end user sales surpass 206 millio n units. The development of mobile phones brought convenience and quite a few advantages to the world. Communication between people is easier and fast. Though, the disadvantages brought along with the fast grown technology cannot be ignored. These problems will not only influence people personally but also the society. Worldwide mobile voice and data revenue will exceed one trillion dollars a year by 2014; according to Gartner, Inc. Many new device types such as tablets and e-book readers will emerge through 2012 and some will find a role in corporations. However, none will achieve a market share comparable to smartphones or laptops, which will remain the dominant corporate mobile devices. Mobile knowledge workers will require both a PC and a smart phone through 2014. CONCLUSION Mobile convergence has been the key and is going to be the root of every sphere of communication. With days getting ahead towards artificial intelligence and research on maximising the applications to making mobile a more effective tool, loads of technological pockets of ideas are going to get further evolved. Smartphones is going to be the future being the focal point for convergence to happen.
