Rotary Soot Blower General Description

BHEL Model RB 1E and RB 1M Rotary Soot Blowers are designed to clean convection surfaces of packaged or field erected industrial boilers where the temperature does not exceed 980C. Above this temperature, retractable type soot blowers are usually recommended. The blowing element of the Rotary Soot Blower remains in the boiler at all times, supported by element bearings usually attached to the boiler tubes. Specially designed nozzles are located on the element (as required) for each specific installation. Saturated or super-heated steam, or compressed air, may be used as the blowing medium. To prevent infiltration of corrosive furnace gases through the element to the valve head, a scavenging air check valve is furnished on all RB 1E and RB 1M heads for pressurized furnace Boilers.

Rotary Soot Blower

For pressurized furnaces a purging air line from a source of higher pressure than the furnace is connected to this scavenging air valve. The Model RB 1E is an electric motor driven unit and Model RB 1M is manually operated.

Operation of RB1M
An exclusive two-step gear train gives a 15:1 ratio between the chain wheel and the valve. Operation requires only pulling the chain on the wheel, which opens the valve almost instantaneously with respect to element rotation. The valve can be adjusted to bring the blowing media to the correct pressure through the set screw provided on the valve lever even while blowing. All surfaces can therefore be cleaned at optimum pressure and efficiency.

The element rotation is normally clockwise, facing the boiler. Recommended speed is 2 rpm. The valve closes automatically at the end of the preset blowing arc. The blowing arc may be changed at any time by merely changing the cams on the main gear.

Operation of RB1E
The drive motor rotates the element, through the bull and pinion gearing, in a full 360 degree arc about its axial centerline. Rotation is normally clockwise at 1.25 rpm. Blowing medium admission is controlled mechanically through a cam operated valve in the head. It is shut off when the blowing sweep is completed. The blowers are designed for either individual operation or for use in a sequential system.

The blowing sweeps are regulated by pre1 2

selected cams mounted on the bull gear. The "Poppet" type valve is mechanically held open during the blowing cycle. The valve automatically

closes after completion of the blowing sweep. After initiation from a start signal, the model RB1E Rotary Blowers are automatically self-controlled.

The proper stop point is determined by limit switch, positively driven by the bull gear to eliminate the possibility of phase shifting between the blowing arc and rotary blowers stop position.

All the blowers are suitable for sequential operation. The blowers cut in, blow, cut out and bring the next blower in series. Only the first blower need be started.

Features
Blowing Pressure Easily Adjusted - Merely loosen lock nut (1) and turn set screw (2) in clockwise direction to increase blowing pressure. A pressure tap on the head permits installation of pressure gauge, so exact blowing pressure may be known.

Blowing Arc Readily Changed 1 2

Merely add or remove cam segments (3) on main gear. No need to remove head

attached by means of four studs (4) and a flange (5). Remove bolts, lift head out, slide element out for inspection and/or replacement. No special tools required.

Main and Power Gears Covered - Final drive pinion is heat treated for maximum service. Head Construction - Valve heads and flanges are made of cast steel for maximum pressure of 54 kg/cm 2.

Valve Seat and Plunger Valve stem and Plunger are made of stainless steel for strength and resistance to bending. Valve disc is made flexible to confirm to any distortions in the seat and achieve tight shut-off. Note the arrangements of nozzles to properly clean all tube banks. Pressurized wall box is shown.

Advantages
1. Permits full blowing arc of 360. 2. Minimum number of moving parts for valve action 3. Adjustable pressure control is easily set for each blower to meet optimum individual blowing pressure requirements. Blower need not be stopped for this adjustment. 4. All the working parts readily accessible for maintenance.

Elements
The element material is carefully selected to suit the furnace temperature. The elements are to be supported by welded or clamped bearings, inside the boiler (By the Boiler maker).
