Maple Ridge and Pitt
Meadows have much to
offer, as this guide will
outline, from powerboating
on Pitt Lake to mountain
biking on Blue Mountain
or ightseeing over all of
it. There are attractions
like the Meadows Corn
Maze and WildPlay tree-
top course. The ACT has no
shortage of events to take
in, and Maple Ridge and
Pitt Meadows, together,
offer a variety of golf
courses to choose from.
But much of what
makes the two communi-
ties special, what makes
people move here or keep
coming back, are their
natural surroundings.
Camping in Golden Ears
Provincial Park is not only
close to home for many,
but it is loaded with trails
for hiking and horse-
back riding. The water at
Alouette Lake is as cold
and clear as any, and the
picnic area is perfect for
day trips, birthday BBQs
and family get-togethers.
The municipal dikes here
offer not only views of
the majestic Golden Ears
Mountains, but wildlife,
from eagles and hawks,
herons and cranes, all set
amongst acres and acres of
farmland and following the
path of the Alouette River.
There are more trails in
the Malcom Knapp UBC
Research Forest, and
amongst water falls at
Cliff Park and throughout
Kanaka Creek Regional Park.
Those who live here
know these trails well,
because they are all so
close to home; what better
than a Saturday morn-
ing walk in the woods?
The two communities
host many special events
throughout the year, as well
- CountryFest, Pitt Meadows
Day and Ghost Ridge are
among the best. Putting
them on requires many
hard-working volunteers a
quality in abundance here.
Biking, hiking, canoeing,
shing horseback riding
you can do it all here.
Just step outside.

Tourism Maple Ridge and
Pitt Meadows isnt just for
visitors to the area. The
organization offers plenty
for locals, too, and there are
a plethora of different ways
for people to get involved.
Were actually a re-
source for locals, ex-
ecutive director Kristina
Gervais said. Weve got
a lot of ideas that not
everyone knows about.
Gervais said they can
provide information
on all sorts of local rec-
reational activities.
Theres canoeing, theres
walking on the dikes, and
there are no more parking
fees in Golden Ears park, so
people can go experience
the beauty there, she said.
One local activity Gervais
particularly recommends
is the self-guided Circle
Farm Tour, which offers
residents a chance to check
out local farms, winer-
ies and greenhouses.
Its getting to know
the people who make
it, bake it or grow it,
she said. Its a really fun
drive around town.
Gervais said another
intriguing activity comes
from the Red Hawk Survival
Training Institute.
They actually take
you out in the woods
and teach you how to
survive, she said.
Residents can nd out
much more of what the
local area has to offer on
the organizations web-
site, www.mapleridge-
pittmeadows.com, which
features information on
everything from arts and
culture events to maps
and information on almost
every conceivable out-
door activity. Gervais said
theyve focused on making
the website accessible to
residents, and their commu-
nity calendar in particular
offers an up-to-date listing
of whats going on in town.
Our website, were
constantly updating it with
new ideas, Gervais said.
We maintain a community
calendar of events, and
we work really hard on
keeping that up to date.
The organization also
runs the Harris Road visitor
centre, and completed
a substantial renovation
there earlier this year.
We just nished doing a
complete overhaul on the
visitor centre, Gervais said.
We look a lot different
than the old tourism ofce.
One of the features of
the renovation is a com-
pletely new gift shop.

We just added it when

we did our refresh in the
spring, Gervais said.
That shop features a
wide variety of merchan-
dise from local and B.C.
companies. Gervais said
one particular highlight
is their selection of First
Nations crafts and artwork.
We have a really great
selection of First Nations
products, she said.
Everything is made in
B.C., and royalties are
paid to the artists.
Other local products
they offer include Global
Coffee, roasted in Maple
Ridge, and Hard Bite
Potato Chips, which have
been featured on CBCs
Dragons Den entrepre-
neurship show. Gervais said
their offerings from local
company Berry Boys have
also been a big hit so far.
They have a huge
selection of dried blue-
berry products, she said.
Their family has been
farming in the commu-
nity for a long time.
The visitor centre also has
plenty of information for
locals preparing to head
elsewhere in the province.
We can help trip-plan for
all of B.C., Gervais said.
Gervais said summer is
the busiest time for the
organization, and they can
always use more volunteers.
No experience is required,
and theyll help you get
accustomed quickly.
We have a really great
training program.
She said the tourism
organizations work is
important to promoting
everything Maple Ridge
and Pitt Meadows have to
offer to a wider audience.

On behalf of Maple Ridge
council, I would like to
welcome you to our com-
munity. Whether you are
here for a visit or you have
recently moved to Maple
Ridge, I know that your time
here will be pleasurable.
I have to admit that Im
not in the least bit objec-
tive when it comes to this
community. My grandfather
came here as a settler in
the 1800s and my roots,
as with my fellow council
members, are very deep in
this community. This is not
a destination, this is home.
Weve all raised our
families here, worked here
and take particular de-
light in enjoying the many
amenities, man-made and
natural, that Maple Ridge
has to offer. Almost every
weekend there is a com-
munity festival or special
event. My family and I
love to attend the farmers
market in the town centre
every Saturday from May
to October. In the winter
I love to come downtown
for the Christmas in the
Park celebration and Santa
Claus parade. Mid-summer
we celebrate Canada Day
and one of the regions
most vibrant Caribbean
Festivals. We are a commu-
nity that loves to celebrate.
As you will quickly see,
we are surrounded by the
bounty of nature. In the
shadow of the Golden Ears
Mountain lies a series of
parks, dikes and hiking trails
that are the envy of our
neighbouring communities.
From walking, hiking, jog-
ging, cycling to horseback
riding, theres places that
are as little as 15 minutes
from our town centre that
will allow you to take a
break from the hustle and
bustle of everyday life and
take a well deserved break.
Let me nish by saying
that one of the most im-
portant attributes of Maple
Ridge are the extraordinary
people that live and work
here. All of the great events
and festivals in our commu-
nity are organized by volun-
teers. This is a special place
and you are going to meet
amazing passionate people
that love this commu-
nity as much as I do. Enjoy
your time in Maple Ridge.
Jump in and get involved.
I know youll have fun.

Pitt Lake has turned into
one of the most popular
boating destinations in
the Lower Mainland.
According to Brian
Steuk, owner of Pitt
Meadows Marine, one of
the biggest attractions
of the lake is that theres
room for everyone.
Its the size of the lake,
he said. You can put
1,000 boats up there and
still not be crowded.
At 24 kilometres in
length, Pitt Lake is the
largest freshwater tidal
lake in North America.
The local area attracts
the wakeboarders, the
waterskiers, Steuk said.
For those who prefer a
scenic boat voyage with
plenty of wildlife sight-
ings, Pitt Lake has plenty
to offer from that per-
spective as well, particu-
larly with the many ospreys
who live in the area.
Weve got lots of wildlife
right here, Steuk said.
The lake also connects to
a wide variety of trails that
can let visitors explore the
area outside of a boat.
Theres a dock at the far
end of the lake, with biking
and hiking, he said. There
are also natural hot tubs.
Steuk said those and
other off-water activities
can be a great alternative
if the weather turns too
ugly for powerboating.
If its too bad of a day
for boating, you can walk,
he said. Theres a lodge at
the far end where they do
rafting and y-shing.
The lake has plenty of
sandy beaches, islands and
marine campsites that are
only accessible by boat to
explore. The shore ranges
from mountainsides to
small streams and coves,
so there are a wide variety
of scenic views to check
out. Conditions on the
lake can be quite vari-
able, though, so those
days that arent great for
boating do happen.
Seas can be quite large
at times. I recommend 16
feet and up, Steuk said.
Its more stable because
the weather can change.
Steuk also recommends
bringing a full comple-
ment of safety gear if
youre going out on the
lake, including an anchor,
ares and life jackets.
Its better to be
safe than sorry.

14 Discover Maple Ridge Pitt Meadows 2011
For the equine-minded,
Maple Ridge and Pitt
Meadows have a lot to offer.
ZsaZsa Stiasny of
EquuTrails said her organi-
zation, which offers guided
horseback tours through-
out the Lower Mainland,
does a lot of riding on the
Golden Ears Provincial
Park trails, in particular.
The ones we use are pri-
marily close to the Golden
Ears park, she said. In
Golden Ears park, theres
quite an extensive trail net-
work. Most of the trails start
at the main horse corral;
theres good parking ac-
cess, good staging access.
Stiasny said theres a
plethora of trails to ex-
plore in the park, and
most are interconnected.
If you wanted to ride
for a couple of days,
you could, she said.
Not all trails are created
equal, though, and which
one to take depends
on your horse as well as
your own riding skill.
Theres a wide enough
variety of trails in the area
that everyone can nd
something, though.
Its all different ranges
throughout the whole
Maple Ridge area, Stiasny
said. Theres something for
people of all skill levels.
In Golden Ears, EquuTrails
offers everything from
two-hour trips to Mike
Lake or Lookout Point, a
half-day trip up Alouette
Mountain and full-
day tours to Alouette
Lake or Gold Creek.
Stiasny said the Mike Lake
trail in particular offers
some interesting challenges
for riders and their horses.
Its a pretty steep incline
at the start, she said. If
you go straight up and
down, its two hours.
The Golden Ears trails
also connect to other
networks, including the
trails around Allco Park,
which can expand po-
tential riding options.
You can ride down to
Allco Park and loop back
around, Stiasny said.
There are more trails
in Maple Ridge and Pitt
Meadows than just the
Golden Ears ones, too.
Another popular area is
the trails around Pitt Lake,
where EquuTrails offers a
scenic half-day ride fea-
turing plenty of wildlife
sightings and spectacular
mountain backdrops. There
are also a wide variety of
trails on the dykes, includ-

Maple Ridge and Pitt
Meadows have long
been known for produc-
ing top-notch, world-
class athletes, with the
likes of Cam Neely, Larry
Walker and Greg Moore.
Even today, there
are a handful of local
hockey players playing
in the NHL, including
Andrew Ladd, Brandon
Yip, Brendan Morrison,
and Patrick Wiercioch.
While the common refrain
that theres something
in the water, might be
good for a laugh, the truth
is its the hard work and
dedication of legions of
volunteers and coaches
that have helped nurture
and develop that athletic
talent over the years.
There are dozens of local

The Haney Farmers
Market is now in its sev-
enth season at Maple
Ridges Memorial Peace
Park, with more vendors,
and more opportunities
for local residents to buy
food grown close to home.
Market manager Eileen
Dwillies said there are
more than 200 vendors
taking part in this years
markets, the major-
ity of whom specialize
in fresh, local produce.
Everything at the market
has been picked that morn-
ing or the day before.
You can also talk directly
to the farmer who grows
the vegetables, she said.
Some people say it
costs a little bit more, but
if you care about what
you are putting into your
mouth, its more than
worth it, said Dwillies.
Anywhere from 40 to 60
vendors take part in the
market every weekend.
Of those vendors, 80 per
cent sell locally-grown
produce and meat.
All of our vendors are

from B.C., the majority from
the Lower Mainland, she
said. I think if you hadnt
been to the market in a
few years, youd be quite
surprised if you came back.
The Haney Farmers
Market runs every Saturday
from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. until
the end of October.
The Pitt Meadows
Farmers Market moves
from Osprey Village to the
Pitt Meadows Spirit Square
on Harris Road this year.
We had a wonderful
response from the people
at Osprey Village, but the
problem was that the site
wasnt big enough, said
Dwillies. The Spirit Square
is going to be quite the
busy spot this summer.
The new site features
more space for ven-
dors, and more free
parking she said.
The Pitt Meadows Farmers
Market runs Sundays from
10 a.m. to 2 p.m. from
June 19 to September 11.
A draw of a $100 Market
Shopping Spree is being
offered to people who
purchase new $10 Friend of
the Market memberships
until July 9. The member-
ship supports the work of
the Haney Farmers Market
Society and provides an
email newsletter, early in-
formation on special events
and occasional specials at
the Sizzlin Smokey Dog
stand which is a fundraiser
of the Society. The draw
will take place in front of
The ACT at noon on July 9.

Market is looking for
people interested in

MAPLE RIDGE MUSEUM
The museum is located in
a well-maintained heritage
home built in 1907 for the
manager of the Haney
Brick and Tile company.
Learn how the communitys
pioneers dressed, cooked,
worked and played.
The museum is stocked
with furniture, household
items, native artifacts, a
miniature railway diorama
and Canadian Pacic
Railway caboose in the
front yard. It also houses
the community archives.
This year, the museum
is dragging out some
of its older items to cre-
ate a few new displays.
With a combination of
grant money, the museum
purchased new display
cases, said Allison White,
curator for the Maple
Ridge Historical Society.
Most of the current
display themes are being
revamped, with new items
on display for the history
logging and farming in
the district, as well as the
Japanese settlement.
Only eight per cent of
our collection is on dis-
play, White said, so the
new display cases will
allow for more of it to be
taken out of storage.
The museum will also
have a new Finnish settle-
ment display and one called
Modern Convenience,
as well as a temporary
one featuring the his-
tory of the Maple Ridge
university womens club,
which performed puppet
shows and workshops at
the local library and at arts
centres around the Fraser
Valley, starting in the 1970s.
The club wrote A History
of Settlement in Maple
Ridge. Some of the pup-
pets will be on display.
The museums largest
event of the year is its
Canada Day Carnival, on
July 1, from 1-4 p.m. It will
again feature old costumes
for children to dress up in,
heritage games like bean
bag toss and croquet, as
well as face painting and
refreshments like cotton
candy, popcorn and fruit.
The museum is lo-
cated at 22520 116th Ave.,
open Wednesdays and

year-round, with ex-
tended summer hours.

Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows are awash in heri-

these organizations, there are a number of places
to view local artifacts and learn more about the pio-
neers who settled here more than 100 years ago, as
well as catch a play, performance or art exhibit.

The Bell-Irving Kanaka
Creek Fish Hatchery was es-
tablished almost three de-
cades ago in Kanaka Creek
Regional Park, its history
dates back much further.
The land it sits on was
originally inhabited by
the Kwantlen people.
During the 19th century,
it was settled by native
Hawaiians who worked for
the Hudsons Bay Company,
which led to the origin
of the creeks name.
The name of the creek
comes from the practice of
hiring labourers, or Kanakas,
from the Hawaiian Islands.
Later on, the land be-
came a working farm.
The property it sits on
and the creek was farmed
by the Cuthbert fam-
ily in the 20s and 30s.
After a couple of own-
ership transitions, the
property was sold to
Metro Vancouver and
turned into a hatchery.
It was dedicated by
Lieutenant Governor
Bell-Irving in 1983.
The hatchery is oper-
ated by Metro Vancouver
Parks, the habitat enhance-
ment branch of the federal
Department of Fisheries
and Oceans, the sheries
branch of the provincial
Ministry of the Environment
and the Kanaka Education
and Environmental
Partnership Society. Over
its decades of operation,
its raised millions of sh.
The hatchery has put
close to eight million sh
through. It focusses on
chum and coho salmon
and raises pink salmon
every second year. On
average, the hatchery
releases 200,000 chum and
200,000 coho every year.
That doesnt mean each
year is the same, though.
The numbers vary consider-
ably depending on weather
and water conditions.
The hatchery is located
at the north end of the
park, near several hiking
trails featuring picturesque
views. McClain said they
welcome drop-in visits
from hikers and tourists.
The hatchery is open
seven days a week. More
formal tours are offered
Saturday afternoons from
1 p.m. to 3 p.m. Group
tours can also be booked
for other times by calling
604-530-4983. The hatch-
ery welcomes volunteers
as well. More information
can be found by calling
604-462-8643 or visit-
ing the Kanaka Education
and Environmental
Partnership Society web-
site, www.keeps.org.

The mountain biking
scene in Maple Ridge and
Pitt Meadows has exploded
lately, and Maple Ridge
Cycle owner /operator Troy
Scott said it isnt hard to
nd good trails locally.
Off pretty much every
road from Dewdney Trunk
up to Mission, theres some-
thing going on, he said.
Scott said theres some-
thing for every mountain
biker, from those who pre-
fer serene at rides to those
who love steep downhill
tracks with lots of jumps.
Its anything from rid-
ing on the dikes to expert
trails to jumping, he said.
There are a lot of bal-
anced trails, jump trails,
all that sort of thing.
The trails in Golden Ears
Provincial Park in particular
offer a wide range of op-
tions for people of all skill
levels. The park features ev-
erything from singletrack to
doubletrack to wide paved
or gravel roads. There are
steep paths that will chal-
lenge experienced riders,
but there are also easy
ways down for those who
are just getting started or
prefer watching the scenery
to speeding down hills.
Its no different than
skiing, Scott said. You

For beginning riders,
the Mike Lake area inside
the park has proven to be
a great place to learn.
Mike Lake, thats quite
popular, Scott said.
There are a lot of trails
that branch off of that.
Expert riders can
check out The Woodlot
near the Mission bor-
der, which is world-
renowned for its trails.
Some of the best
trail-builders in the
world do a lot of work
there, Scott said.
Scott said mountain bik-
ing can be a pretty easy
sport to learn, and our
wide variety of beginner-
friendly trails helps to make
it even simpler to pick up.
The biggest thing
is just getting expo-
sure to it, he said.
Scott said one of the top
ways to get going is just
to drop into one of the
local bike shops and talk
with the staff to see what
equipment and trails are
best suited to your needs.
Get into the shop and
talk to the people, he
said. Theyll put you
in the type of bike for
what you want to do.
He said the areas wide
variety of trails makes it
easy to start slow, gradu-
ally gain skill and experi-
ence and work your way
up to the toughest ones if
thats what you want to do,
but there are also enough
easy trails to keep those
who prefer a simpler ride
happy for a long time.
Theres something for
everyone, Scott said.
The skys the limit.

If youre looking
to check out the
shing scene
going with a
licensed guide
might be a good
way to go.
John Simms of Flyshing
With John said licensed
guides can considerably
enhance your shing ex-
perience, as they know the
area, which sh hang out
where and the best way to
go about getting each kind.
As a guide, you have to
know whats available on
what river and what lake,
Simms said. You have
to be licensed with the
provincial government;
theres a test to write.
Keeping current on the
shing conditions on the
Lower Mainlands wa-
terways can be a pretty
comprehensive task for
guides like Simms who
cover a vast swathe of area
on their shing expeditions.
I go all the way from the
Fraser River to the Pitt River,
from the Harrison River to
Alouette Lake, Simms said.
Each of those areas has
its own hotspots and types
of sh to target, which can
mean that each shing trip
is a unique experience.
We do sockeye on the
Fraser, Simms said. We
do dry yshing on the
Alouette River in the sum-
mer, thats very elegant.
Some sh, like sockeye,
are only available in specic
years when they come back
in strong enough numbers,
but there are always some
types of sh available.
My season starts
around April and goes
to November, Simms
said. There are pink
every second year, coho
and chum every year.
Simms said each shing
spot has its own unique
charms, but his favourite
is the Harrison River.
The Harrison is my
home stream, he said.
I really enjoy it.
Fishing with a guide
doesnt have to be all
that expensive, and you
dont have to be expe-
rienced. Simms charges
$250 for at least ve hours
of shing for up to three
people, including rods,
reels, lines, ies and life
jackets, lunch and free
casting lessons if desired.
The tackles all sup-
plied, the lunch is sup-
plied, he said.
Simms said the chief
advantage of hiring a guide
is the knowledge they
can provide, though. He
tries to be as generous as
possible in that area with
what hes learned from his
eight years as a guide.
Youre paying for the
knowledge, he said. I have
no problem giving lots of
knowledge to people.
Simms said hes worked
with everyone from begin-
ning shermen to experts.
Ive had a wide range,
he said. Ive had expert
shermen from England
who just wanted a guide,
Ive had a guy from China
who had never cast a
y before. He hauled in
a 20-pound salmon.
For Simms, guided ysh-
ing is a chance to do what
he loves and make new
contacts along the way.
Its fun to meet people,
he said. Its an enjoy-
able experience for me.

Enjoying the picturesque
qualities of B.C. scenery is
one of the reasons to visit
and live in the West Coast.
And one of the largest
and most popular of those
reasons is Golden Ears
Provincial Park, an incredi-
ble 62,540 hectares of wide-
ly undeveloped wilderness.
Named for the twin peaks
of Mount Blanshard, which
are said to shine gold from
the setting winter sun,
Golden Ears lies in the
Coast Mountains, north of
the mighty Fraser River.
It extends north through
untouched mountain
areas to the wall of
mountain peaks and val-
leys which divide it and
Garibaldi Provincial Park.
The park houses one of
the largest campgrounds
in the province with 353
vehicle/tent campsites
welcoming visitors to two
locations inside the park,
at Alouette Lake and Gold
Creek campgrounds, back-
country or walk-in camping
at Alder Flats on the West
Canyon Trail and Panorama
Ridge on the Golden Ears
trail, with advisories that
some of the more out
of the way sites do not
have facilities provided.
Fifty-ve campsites also
adorn sandy North Beach,
an open beach in front of
the forested sites, and a
great place to watch meteor
showers in early August.
Underneath a canopy of
second growth western
hemlock, western red cedar
and Douglas r trees, camp-
ers and day trippers can be
found exploring the park
on foot, by boat, on their
bikes and on horseback.
Campers can swim at all
campgrounds and day-
use areas and canoeing is
popular on Alouette Lake
with rentals available in
the Alouette day-use area.
Freshwater shing is also
available at Alouette Lake,
Mike Lake and Gold Creek.
A four-lane cement
surface boat launch at
the south end of Alouette
Lake has overnight
parking available for
vehicles and trailers.
Boaters should note,
there is no nearby marina
to moor boats overnight.
The highlight of the
park is the scenery and
the highlight of Golden
Ears is the campers ability
to enjoy the exposure to
so much of what makes
British Columbia famous.
An extensive network
of trails through which
campers can enjoy the
scenery and explore
the area makes up over
20-kilometres of gravel/
dirt paved adventure.
Hiking, cycling and
horseback riding can be
done on any one of a series
of trails which make up the
web throughout the park.
Golden Ears has the
most available hiking trails
this close to Vancouver.
Over a dozen trails lead
to various destinations
throughout the park,
including the 8-mile/12-km
one-way journey to the
Golden Ears themselves.
Near the park headquar-
ters, small Mike Lake is
the starting point for the
Alouette Mountain Hiking
Trail 12-miles/20-km
return to the summit
of Alouette Mountain.
Once nished, you can
enjoy a panoramic view
Picturesque Wilderness:
Golden Ears Park
across the Fraser Valley
into Washington and west
across the Strait of Georgia
to Vancouver Island.
A shorter possibility is the
2.6-mile/4.2-km Mike Lake
Trail. Search the understo-
rey for signs of old logging
equipment and wildowers
such as the delicate pink
azalea, with petals shaped
like ve-pointed stars.
Golden Ears is a desired
destination and begin-
ning of a British Columbia
adventure for the rst
time and return traveler.
Golden Ears Provincial
Park lies in the Coast
Mountains 11 km north
of Maple Ridge on the
north side of the Fraser
River. Access to the park
is by vehicle via Highway
7 or Dewdney Trunk Road
through the District of
Maple Ridge. If heading
west, turn right onto 232nd
and if heading east, turn
left onto 232nd; then turn
right onto Fern Crescent
and follow road into park.
CAMPGROUND DATES:
Alouette campground is
open from June 18 - Sept. 6.
Gold Creek campground
is open all year-round.
North Beach campground is
open from June 25 - Sept. 6.
Camp fees range from $10-
30 per party, per vehicle per
night, with rates available

The Maple Ridge Arts
Centre and Theatre
opened its doors in May
2003, following more
than 13 years of lobbying
by the arts community.
The 43,000-square-foot
building was the districts
rst multi-purpose arts
centre, incorporating
facilities for both per-
forming and visual arts.
It features a 500-seat main
stage theatre, 165-seat
multi-purpose studio the-
atre, an art gallery, meeting
rooms and a variety of stu-
dio space for visual artists.
The equipment was
paid for by a fund-raising
campaign that attracted
$2.2 million in sponsor-

Having a cultural facility
in the heart of a community
not only provides a focal

the message that creativity
and cultural participation
and education are a high
priority for the municipal-

director Lindy Sisson.

Mike Lake Trail: Main Corral
to Mike Lake. Horse and hiking
trail (4.2 kilometres; suggested
hiking time: 2 hours; eleva-
tion change: 100 metres).
Incline Trail: Mike Lake to
Alouette Mountain Fire Access
Trail. Horse and hiking trail (1.2 ki-
lometres; suggested hiking time:
1 hour; elevation change: 150
metres). This steep trail follows
the Incline that was once used
by loggers as a route to skyline
huge logs down to Mike Lake
from the trailhead. This shortcut
eliminated 5 kilometres of the
railroad haul down the mountain.
Alouette Mountain Hiking
Trail: Top of Incline Trail via
Alouette Mountain Fire Access
Trail (10 kilometres; suggested
time: 5 hours; elevation change:
1,000 metres). The panoramic
view from Alouette Mountain is
spectacular. For many hikers the
highlight of the trail is the virgin
stands of mountain hemlock and
yellow cedar. The return trip to
Alouette Mountain can take up
to 9 or 10 hours. Be sure to carry
water in dry weather and expect
snow well into June. This trail is a
strenuous hike requiring experi-
ence and proper equipment.
Alouette Mountain Fire Access
Trail: Top of Incline Trail to desti-
nation northeast of Lake Beautiful
(7.3 kilometres; elevation change:
400 metres). The trail follows
the old re access road through
subalpine forest and eventu-
ally through a blowdown area
caused by Typhoon Freda in 1962.

(1.5 kilometres; suggested hiking
time: 3/4 hour; elevation change:
175 metres). Good views. In
wetter seasons a picturesque
waterfall tumbles down a cliff
just beyond the Lake Viewpoint.
West Canyon Trail (Golden Ears
Trail): West Canyon parking lot
to Alder Flats. Hiking trail only
(5 kilometres; suggested time: 2
1/2 hours; elevation change: 250
metres). Trail follows an old log-
ging grade for 3.2 kilometres then
swings uphill. At this point a short
trail drops downhill to Lower Falls.
Golden Ears Trail: West Canyon
parking lot to summit of North
Ear. Hiking trail only (12 kilome-
tres; suggested time: 7 hours;
elevation change: 1,500 metres).
Follow the West Canyon Trail
from the parking lot to Alder
Flats. Beyond Alder Flats the trail
switchbacks upward on an old
logging road then heads steeply
uphill to Panorama Ridge. Most
of the elevation gain is made in
this stretch. Listen for the nasal
squeak of pikas in the rock slides.
Impressive view of Pitt Lake to
the west and mountains to the
east and north are possible from
Panorama Ridge. The ascent of
the North Ear is made from the
left (east) side across a permanent
snoweld. Extreme caution is
advised and proper equipment
is recommended. Drinking water
may be scarce in dry weather be-
tween Alder Flats and the snow-
eld. The round trip to Golden
Ears is an overnight expedition for
all but the ttest hikers. Overnight
camping areas are located at
Alder Flats and on Panorama
Ridge around the mountain shel-
ter which, itself, can accommo-
date up to 8 people. Expect snow
on Panorama Ridge into July.
This trail is long and strenuous
and should only be attempted by
experienced, well-equipped back-
country travellers. No open res
are permitted in the backcountry.
Lower Falls Trail: Gold Creek
parking lot to Lower Falls. Hiking
trail only (2.7 kilometres; sug-
gested time: 1 hour; elevation
change: minimal). A very popular,
easy walk along Gold Creek to
the 10-metre high Lower Falls. A
beach area halfway to the falls is
a good spot for a picnic or a sun-
bathe. Some of the best scenery
in the park is visible just beyond.
Rolley Lake
There are two short walking
trails in the park. Lakeside Loop
is approximately 40 minutes
return and Rolley Falls is ap-
proximately 10 minutes. For your
own safety and the preservation
of the park, obey posted signs
and keep to designated trails.
Shortcutting trails destroys
plant life and soil structure.
Kanaka Creek
Kanaka Creek Regional Park of-
fers beautiful walking trails off
of 256th Street. Rainbow Bridge
and marshes are located at the
south end, Cliff Falls at the north.
This linear park is in several
distinct units. The best trails are
at the Riverfront and Cliff Falls
sections of the park. First time
visitors are recommended to
visit Riverfront. Take Lougheed
Highway to the trafc lights at
240th Street in Maple Ridge.
Turn south towards the river and
follow River Road west 3 km to
the park entrance on your left.
Cliff falls
The focal point of Kanaka Creek
Regional Park is the falls, a spec-
tacular water canyon popular as
a picnic spot. The Canyon Trail
offers a treasure trove of natural
wonders in a short distance.
Nursery logs, sword ferns, tower-
ing Cedar, Hemlock and Douglas
Fir trees serve as a backdrop for
the tumbling and cascading creek.
Unusual tailed frogs and the dip-
per bird will be found along the
creek. Intriguing water-sculpted
rock and sandstone formations
are visible on both branches
of the creek. Because of the
precipitous cliffs, it is absolutely
essential to follow the directional
signs and not to stray beyond
marked boundaries on any part
of the Cliff Falls trail system.
The park entrance is located at
25100 116 Avenue, Maple Ridge.
Hayward Lake
A trail encircling the Hayward
Lake Reservoir offers a scenic
day hike. The east side trail is
10 km long, but there are other
interesting stops on either end.
There is a slight downhill ad-
vantage to hiking the east side
trail north to south, but if you
plan to hike the entire length,
consider using two vehicles
and parking one at each end.
Park at the Railroad Trail park-
ing lot west of the Ruskin
dam. Travel east on Dewdney
Trunk Road, then turn south
after Stave Falls dam.

to a bylaw that will provide
funding to allow the BIA to
carry on from 2012 to 2017.
That will create the
framework to allow a
higher levy, raising the
total take next year from
its 1,000 or so members to
$193,500 from $163,500.
Ineke Boekhorst, execu-
tive director with the BIA,
said before requesting a
renewal of the bylaw, the
association asked its mem-
bers earlier this year if it
wanted the BIA to continue.
Of the 10 per cent who
replied, all wanted the
association to keep doing
the work its been do-
ing the past ve years.
When the BIA was rst cre-
ated in 2006 the focus was
on crime and safety. Thats
improved in the down-
town, thanks to a $50,000
budget this year for that,
provided by Maple Ridge.
And thanks to the
$50,000 annual facade-
improvement program,
the place is looking good.
Now we feel that the
downtown looks a lot
better, we feel that the
crime rate looks a lot
better. Now we feel its
time to do marketing.
That will be directed
outside of Maple Ridge to
encourage newcomers,
but also aim at convincing
Maple Ridge residents of
the merits of the core area.
Boekhorst considers the
facade improvement pro-
gram one of the highlights
of the past ve years.
This year, the asso-
ciation will dole out
$50,000 to eight busi-
nesses to help them in
their spruce-up efforts.
That, in turn, will gener-
ate renovations worth
$3 million as businesses
use the free money to

kickstart projects.
Complete reconstruction
of 224th Street and two
blocks along Lougheed
Highway in the downtown,
thanks to the districts
Downtown Enhancement
Program, has also helped.
But its now up to the
BIA to ensure that busi-
nesses keep up their
pride in their premises,
Boekhorst pointed out.
In a report to council,
economic development
manager Sandy Blue said
the BIA wants to broaden
its focus and follow the
districts strategic plan.
So far, the municipality
has spent nearly $60 mil-
lion on a new library, arts
centre, youth centre and
Memorial Peace Park over
the past several years.
Combined with the Smart
Growth on the Ground-
based plan, which calls for
an eco-friendly downtown,
more than 1,500 new
condos have been built
in the downtown area.
Theres lots going
on, said Boekhorst.
Every spring theres
Sparkle Week, a ve-day
blitz complemented by a
BIA-funded power-washing
of downtown sidewalks,
which eventually will
cover every pedestrian
path in the downtown.
Two other tasks taken on
by the BIA are the mural
program, and the speak-
ers series, where members
can network and learn.
As well, downtown Maple
Ridges old Spirit street
banners got a second life as
reusable shopping bags.
About three years ago the
Downtown Maple Ridge
BIA, in partnership with
MeadowRidge and Haney
Rotary Clubs, Maple Ridge-
Pitt Meadows Arts Council,
District of Maple Ridge, City
of Pitt Meadows and School
District No. 42 produced
about 85 nylon street
banners which helped
create a festive, colourful
atmosphere for downtown,
leading up to and during
the 2010 Games. The ban-
ners were all individually
hand-painted by school
children throughout the
school district. Eventually
these unique designs had
to be retired, so rather
than sending them to the
landll, with the help of
the Alouette Correctional
Centre for Women, they
were transformed into reus-
able nylon shopping bags.
Converting the old ban-
ners into reusable nylon
shopping bags rather
than using new fabric:
Avoided making 21,600
plastic bags each year.
Avoided sending 301
kg (663 lb) of ny-
lon to the landll.
Saved up to 363
gallons of oil.
Freed up 80 trees to
capture and store CO2
from other sources
for a full year.
All proceeds from the
sale of the shopping bags
goes to the development
of new green spaces in
downtown Maple Ridge.
The shopping bags
come in many different
colours and sizes. Small
bags retail for $6 and large
bags for $8, or two for
$15, three for $20. They
are available from Good
Company (11987 224 St)
and Bodacious Baskets
(22321 Dewdney Trunk Rd).

The Greater Vancouver
Zoo will be the theme
for this years Meadows
Maze in Pitt Meadows.
Being one of the largest
corn mazes in the Pacic
Northwest, this years
theme will
be com-
prised of two
mazes with
6.3 kilome-
tres of paths
designed to
challenge
the most
directionally adept.
Every year the Hopcott
familys 17-acre eld
is turned into another
distinct design using a
global positioning system
(GPS). A tractor carves the
maze when the corn is still
small. It is estimated that
each maze takes one and
a half hours to complete.
In addition to the maze,
there are lots of fun activi-
ties for children, including
a petting
zoo, a bee
observatory,
hay wagon
rides, or a
barrel train
ride through
the maze
for those
who dont want to get lost.
This year the maze wont
be open until August
13th due to the springs

Looking for a new way to
experience B.C.? Viewing it
from the air might be just
the thing. Chris Georgas,
the owner and operator of
Pacic Rim Aviation, said
his company, which ies
out of the Pitt Meadows
airport, offers a wide
variety of aerial sightsee-
ing (or ightseeing) trips.
Some of their prominent
trips include one from
Pemberton to Whistler,
one from Sechelt to
Powell River, one over to
Nanaimo and one up the
Fraser Valley to Hope.
We y around the local
universe here, Georgas
said. On an average
ight, we go for about
one and a half hours.
Georgas said the com-
panys planes are perfect
for ightseeing, as their
design allows passengers
to get an unparalleled view
of the ground below.

FINDINGS
Its great visibility, he
said. We y high-wing
aircraft, so the wings up
above their heads. Its
perfect for photos.
Their ightseeing trips
also span a wide variety
of heights, so passen-
gers can see everything
from mountaintops to
forests and rivers.
The planes can y at
all altitudes, so you get a
great view of the Lower
Mainland and the local
mountains, Georgas said.
It can be quite a re-
laxing trip as well.
The planes are very
comfortable, Georgas said.
Pacic Rim mostly
focuses on pilot training
and charter services, but
Georgas said ightseeing
has become a growing part
of their business thanks to
its increasing popularity.
Weve been doing this
for over eight years and
had great response, he
said. We do dozens of
ights per month.
Georgas said a ightsee-
ing trip has proven quite
a popular attraction for
tourists, as it provides a
different perspective on
B.C.s spectacular vistas.
Its a great way for people
from other countries to
see the Lower Mainland,
he said. We have people
from all over the world.
One of the most popular
trips for foreign visitors
heads downtown, providing
an aerial view of Vancouver
and its surroundings.
We orbit the down-
town core, then go to
Seymour, Grouse, usually
out to Barnston Island,
Georgas said. Its great
for overseas visitors.
Flightseeing isnt just for
tourists, though. Georgas
said plenty of locals have
caught the ightseeing bug
as well, and the Golden Ears
Bridge has made it easier
for many to check it out.
We have a lot of people
that come from the
other side of the Fraser;
Langley, White Rock,
Abbotsford, he said.
White Rock, its only about
a 30-minute drive now.
The wide variety of trips
offered mean if you like
what you see on your rst
ightseeing expedition,
there are plenty of other
areas you can try. The Pitt
Meadows airports facili-
ties, including the Runway
Caf restaurant, can also
help turn a ightseeing
trip into the anchor point
of an enjoyable day.
You can spend the
morning on the deck sip-
ping coffee and watching
airplanes take off and land,
Georgas said. We have a
lot of repeat business.

across Canada, hired Ray
Boogaards as the arenas
new general manager
and is negotiating with a
major franchise to oper-
ate the concession.
Service interruptions
are expected as con-
struction continues
throughout the year.
Work on the sanitary
sewer line has also started
and dressing rooms will be
shutting down during the
summer months as crews
install new plumbing.
The Red Rink will
also close from July to
September to speed up
the pace of construction.
If construction crews
dont run into surprises, the
project will be completed
before the end of the year.
