THOUGHTS ON THE WAY UP MOUNT CARMEL I ended my last column with congratulations to all the graduates of our parish, especially the eighth graders from our parish school. This week, I must add another Congratulations! to those eighth graders and the seventh graders on our Boys Varsity Soccer team. They won the Parochial League Championship (equivalent to the Diocesan Championship) last week at the Prep Events Center by beating Blessed Sacrament 1-0. It was an exciting and well-played (by both teams) match and our soccer players can be very proud of their accomplishment. They beat St. James in the first playoff match and then Our Lady of Peace in double overtime in the Semi-finals. The win in the Championship completes an undefeated season for the team. Quite an accomplishment! It was also a day for firsts. It was Jasons first time at the Events Center and Ms. Antoskes first soccer match of her life. She certainly picked a great time to start watching soccer! Congratulations to the boys soccer team! I saw many familiar faces at Jasons ordination last Friday. I heard many parishioners say how moving and impressive the ceremony was. And, for many, it was their first ordination Mass. The cathedral was full of people from all over the diocese, particularly St. Basils in Coalport and Our Lady of Mount Carmel. I was proud to see our Deacon, Dr. Pregler, assisting the Bishop all during the ceremony and of the great job Andy Pregler did with the first reading. It was a real pleasure to assist with Fr. Zeb, Jasons pastor, and Fr. Amico, his former pastor and a former associate at OLMC. And, to give Communion to so many OLMC people both young and old. Jasons Mass of Thanksgiving Mass at 11:00 is another opportunity to join the celebration of our newest priest. I hope that I will see many of you for Mass and at the reception. Thanks to Florence and the volunteers on her team for the work they have been doing for the past few weeks. Even though it is summer and vacation time for our students, dont forget the Summer Program at OLMC this summer. It began this past week. I know that Ms Brown has a great program planned. And, we have finally been able to cut the grass so that the younger kids wont get lost in the fields around the school! Speaking of vacation, Jason will have a little time off before he reports to Our Lady of Peace for his first priestly assignment on July 22. I told his mom that she should insist that he bring the family to our Fish Dinners next Lent. We got the final report on the dinners this past week and I am happy to say that the hard work of so many of you really paid off. Despite the fact that we did not raise our dinner price, we made over $2000 more than last year and almost twice what we made 3 years ago. Many thanks to Florence, our pierogi makers, the potato salad and cole slaw crew and all those who worked the dining room on each of the Fridays. And, thanks to all our sponsors who made donations of money, produce, ice cream and pop for the dinners. What a big help they are to our parish! Well, I am in Dallas where the Prep debaters are competing at the National Tournament. We arrived just as the Mavericks won the NBA championship. The traffic getting to our hotel was a lot worse than the worst day in Erie! I also just talked to Dr. Pregler who is judging for Andy who is also here competing in Extemp. I guess thats where he learned to read! We will all be back for Mass on Sunday, so pray for a safe trip for all of us and for Jason as he begins his priestly service in the Diocese of Erie. Fr. Ray
