SEMANTICS PROJECT

FREE TIME

ANTONIO MRMOL ALMAGRO

PART 1: LESSON PLAN


I am going to do this project at school when I am doing my practicum. I spook with my practicum tutor and she said me that I am going to do it in 3th A, a class when I had already taught. This class is going to start a new unit call Goodbye. The topic of the unit is free time and I am going to do the project about this topics. This is an interesting topic for the pupils. I am going to divide the topic in four categories: sport activities, cultural activities, activities with friends and individual activities. The vocabulary in each category is:

Each category has five words so there are twenty words in total. The practicum tutor said me these are enough words. I plan to do the following phases: First, I am going to present this vocabulary by power points that I have prepared. In this power point I am going to present the vocabulary by category and with pictures. I am going to say correctly dire the words and the pupils are going to repeat. Then, the pupils are going to do different activities and games to work this vocabulary. These are going to present by power point too. The pupils are going to divide in four groups to do the activities. These activities are: 1 Activity: The group has to choose the activity that doesnt belong to this category. If the group guesses they get one point. 2 Activity: The group has to choose the correct activity in each sentence. They have to write in your answer sheet the activity (annexe 1). If they guess they get one point.

3 Activity: I am going to put in the power points all pictures of the activities. Each group plays two minutes. I am going to point one activity and one pupil is going to say a sentence used this activity. For each success they get one point. 4 Activity: I am going to put in the power points all activities (written). They have to put each activity in its category corresponding. They have to write them in your answer sheet. If they guess all activities they get three points. 5 Activity: They are going to play to broken phone. I am going to whisper one activity to one pupil of each group. Then they are going to come to their group and whisper the activities to his partner. They are going to whisper to the last pupil. He is going to say me the activity. If this is correct they get one point. Finally, they are going to play a cards game. I am going to give the pupils the cards (annexe 2). The cards are about the vocabulary worked in the power point, the same words and the same pictures. They are going to have to color the cards. Each pupil is going to have his cards game. When they have finished they are going to start the game. To play they are going to divide in groups four. The object the game is to be the first to get the cards the same category (sports activities, cultural activities, activities with friends and individual activities). The game starts putting the cards prone in the table. Each pupil picks a card, shows it and says it in English (if the pupil dont know to say the activity in English he has to leave it next to the pile of cards). When the pupil picks a card there are four possibilities:

The pupil picks an activities card. If nobody has begun the category this is going to be his category but if someone pupil has already begun this category he have to leave the card on his right. The pupil returns to pick an activities card. If the card is the same category the pupil leaves it next other cards but if the card is the other category he leaves it on his right. The pupil picks a free time card. He saves the card as he is going to be able to use it to buy a card to someone pupil. A pupil cant decline to sell card. The pupil picks a work time card. The pupil is going to have to leave this card and two cards from him next to the pile of cards.

Then picking a card they can spend a turn. The first pupil to complete one category wins the game. This is the session that I am going to tech to the pupils.

PART 1: AFTER CLASS


Finally, I taught this lesson in two classes. In the first class we worked with the power point. They were very excited because the teacher doesnt use the power point. First I presented the vocabulary. I said the activities correctly dire and the pupils repeated them. We repeated the activities several time. If a student didnt say well he repeated alone again. Then I divided the pupils in four groups and explained that we would do different activities about these free time activities. The pupils did all activities and they had lots of fun. The small competition was very encouraging. The best activity was the broken phone. It was very funny. This first session ended with the pupils colored their cards. I explained that they had to color the cards in their home because the next session we would play with theirs. The next day I tried to explain the card game in English but it was impossible. I started in English but the pupils didnt understand me and I didnt have enough vocabulary to explain it well. Finally I decided to explain the game in Spanish but when the game started I only used English. Also I try that during the game the pupils spoken English but it was very difficult. Pupils enjoyed much with the game. They played several time with different partners. Even during the break the pupils were playing in the playground. I think that the lesson was beneficial for the pupils. Before they knew some activities but when the second class finished they knew all activities. I think that the lesson was very funny and contributed for the pupils learned them. Presenting the vocabulary by power point was a success, was very encouraging. The pupils were very participatory and this facilitated the class development. The card game was well. They spoke in English more or less. At least the activities about the topics as It was obligatory to get cards. The greatest difficulty was my English. I have learned that I need to expand my vocabulary to teach all in English class.
