1.OntheDenominationofTheRite:
NCIENT:OnefindstheoriginsofourRiteintheRiteofMizraim [Venice,1788]andtheRiteofMemphis(Montauban,1815).In1881 thesetwoRiteswereunited.

PRIMITIVE: The actual Rite of MemphisMizraim stems from the first filiation, coming from the Primitive Rite of Paris in 1721, which was followed,in1779,bythePrimitiveRiteofPhiladelphsatNarbonne. RITE:TheRulesandCeremoniespractisedinourTradition. TheRiteisanInitiaticWayinitself. MEMPHIS:IsacapitolcityofancientEgypt,situatedatthepointofthe DeltaoftheNile.ItwasherethattheRitewascreatedbyInitiatesincontact withthisancientcivilisation. MIZRAIM:ThiswordisthepluralofEgyptianandfirstappearedinagroup ofSociniensinVenice.ThePatentandConstitutionwasgivenbyCagliostro. SOVEREIGNSANCTUARY:SpecifiedbytheRiteofMemphisMizraim,is thegovernmentoftheRite,oftheOrder,andtheObedience.

2.HistoryoftheRite

ORETHAN200yearsold,thisRitestillengenderslivelyinterest and enjoys important developments on an international level. Faithfultoitsfoundingprinciples,itaffirmsitselfasaRitethatis traditional,symbolicandspiritualistic,andassociatedwiththeprinciplesof toleranceandliberty. UponenteringintotheAncientandPrimitiveRiteofMemphisMisram,one placesafootonthepathoftradition, with respect forhuman values and tolerance.ThisRiteischaracterizedbyaninitiaticquestfoundedon: *Aspiritualisticanddeistorientation; *AvocationtotransmitthephilosophicalreflectiononsymbolsofAncient Egypt and the different esoteric currents Hermetic, Gnostic, Kabbalistic, TemplarandRose+Croix); *Anopensearchforabetterunderstandingofoneself. SuchisthespiritoftraditionalFreemasonryforwhich,ineveryact,thereis both the visible and the invisible, the positive and the negative, already bearingtheseedsofthefuture. word'Mizr'thatsignifies'Egypt'inHebrew)isalsoknownasEgyptianRite. Cagliostro's Egyptian Masonry related to the A.P.R.M.M. by its study of mysticalandtheurgicalpractices. The two United Rites of Memphis and Misraim, form in their union an authenticOrderandnotasimpleRite.TheOrderwasconceivedwiththe purposeofcollatinginasingleorganisation,allthewisdom,knowledgeof initiatesscatteredinthenumerousRitualBodiesofhigherMasonryandin the Illuministic and Chivalric Orders.The A.P.R.M.M. is of Chivalric and Illuministic character, deeply rosicrucian and hermetic, with particular cabalisticfunctions,thatdoesnotinitshigherdegreeshavecorrespondences withtheotherdegreespractisedinRitualMasonry. ThecreatoroftheEgyptianFreemasonryofEgyptianRitewastheCount AlexanderofCagliostro(17491796).AlexanderofCagliostrowasinitiatedto thesecretsoftheEgyptianFreemasonrybythemysteriousMasterAltothasin 1776, year of the foundation of the Illuminati Order. In effects a secret connection existed between the Illuminati Order of WeishauptandtheEgyptianFreemasonryofCagliostrothatwasofficially foundedin1785,yearofthesuppressionoftheIlluminatiOrder.Besides,

Napoleone Bonaparte was initiated by Cagliostro to the Egyptian Freemasonry and the Masonic Rites of Memphis, of Misram and of MemphisMisramcomedownfromit.GadBedarridewasreceivedintothe RiteofMisraimbytheSagePatriarchAnaniah,GrandEgyptianConservator, whohasbeenidentifiedbytheauthorGastonVentura. ItissaidthatatthistimethatCagliostrowasinEngland,elaboratinghis famous"EgyptianRite"whichheofficiallyfoundedin1782.Accordingtohis ownaccount,thisritewasderivedfromamanuscriptbyacertainGeorge Coftonwhoseidentityhasneverbeen discovered which he boughtby chanceinLondon.JohnYarker,however,isoftheopinionthat"theRiteof CagliostrowasclearlythatofPasqually,"andthatifheacquireditfroma manuscriptinLondonitwouldindicatethatPasquallyhaddisciplesinthat city.AfarmoreprobableexplanationisthatCagliostroderivedhisEgyptian MasonryfromthesamesourceasthatonwhichPasquallyhaddrawnforhis OrderofElectedPriests,namely,theKabbalah,andthatitwasnotfroma singlemanuscriptbutfromaneminentJewishKabbalistinLondonthathe tookhisinstructions.... It is said that at this time Cagliostro created the Mother Lodge of the EgyptianRiteatLyons.Cagliostro,itissaid,hadestablishedthesystemof EgyptianFreemasonrywhichconsistedofbothmaleandfemaleLodges,the latterbeingheadedbyhiswife,Serafina.ThefruitsofCagliostro'sresearches intotheoccultsocietiesofEuropewereabodyofknowledgeknownasthe Arcana Arcanorum, or A.. A.. He took this term from the original Rosicruciansofthe17thCentury,buthiscorpusconsistedofdescriptionsof magicalpracticesthatstressed"InternalAlchemy,"soitgoes.Cagliostrohad learnedtheseTantriktechniquesfromGermanRosicrucianlodges. Afewyears[after1776]thecelebratedCountCagliostrofoundedatStrasburg his Egyptian Masonry. [His first Lodge was founded at Lyons, under the nameof"TriumphantWisdom";butheafterwardsextendedhisscheme,and openedatParisanandrogyneLodge,whichhetermedthe"MotherLodgeof EgyptianAdoptiveMasonry".HeafterwardswenttoCourland,andwasso fortunate as to number among his dupes the Countess de Meden, who

recommendedhimtothenoticeoftheEmpressCatherine.Hewas,however, finallyexposedanddenounced.] In 1782 a new and attractive Order sprang up, consisting of 90 degrees, whichwascalledtheOrderofMizraim,orLeRiteOrientale.Itmadeits appearance in Italy, and was said to have been brought from Egypt by a learnedEgyptian,ofthenameofAnaniah.[Barruelplacestheintroductionof EgyptianMasonryalittleearlier.Hesays,'AJutlantmerchant,whohadlived sometimeinEgypt,began,intheyear1771,tooverrunEurope,pretendingto initiateadeptsintheancientmysteriesofMemphis.Hestoppedsometimeat Malta,wheretheonlymysterieswhichhetaughtwerethetenetsofManes; and these he sedulously infused into the minds of the people. These principles began to expand, and the island was already threatened with revolutionaryconfusion,whentheKnightsverywiselyobligedourmodern Illumineetoseekhissafetyinflight.ThefamousCountCagliostroissaidto havebeenadiscipleofhis,aswellassomeotheradeptsinthecountyof AvignonandLyons. TheRitebeganaround1805amongstNapoleon'ssoldiersinEgyptwhowere Freemasons.ItwasbasedprimarilyonthedegreeworkofthePhiladelphesof Narbonne as well as several other masonic Rites that were operating in France during this period. The Rite was then introduced to France from EgyptbySamuelHonisin1815andalsospreadtoItaly. ItwassoontransplantedintoFrance,andflourishesthereat1850s;although itwassubsequentlyshowntohavebeeninventedandbroughttomaturityby two Jewish Masons, called Bedarride [In one of the degrees, detached portions are introduced of the lecture of the Royal Order of Bruce; and thereforeitisutterlyimpossiblethatthissystemcouldhavebeenimported from Egypt, where the above Order was unknown. Before the French revolution, there weresome Chapters of it in France. During the ensuing anarchy, some copies of several of the lectures had found their way into improper hands; and it is probable that the Bedarrides had obtained possessionofthem;althoughtheyhadneverbeeninitiatedintothedegree; andthusthefragmentsoftheselecturesbecameincorporatedintotheirnew

systemofMisraicMasonry.],anddoubtsareentertainedwhetheritbesoold asthecommencementofthepresentcentury.[Thorysaysitwasnotknownin Francetill1814,althoughheacknowledgesthatitwaspreviouslypractisedin Italy.] Between 1810 and 1813, in Naples (Italy), the three brothers Bdarride (Michel,MarcandJoseph)receivedtheSupremePowersfromtheOrderof MisramanddevelopedtheRiteofMisraminFrance.Theymadeitofficial in Paris in 1814. The Rite was composed of 90 degrees, taken from the Scottishfreemasonry,fromMartinismandotherMasoniccurrents,andthe lastfourdegreesreceivedthenameof"ArcanaArcanorum." In1815,inMontauban(France),theMotherLodgeoftheRiteofMemphis was constituted with the Grand Master Samuel Honis as head, whom followed, in 1816, GabrielMathieu Marconis. In 1838, Jacques Etienne MarconisdeNgre,sonofthislastone,tookovertheRiteofMemphis.The Rite,forJ.E.MarconisdeNgre,wasacontinuationoftheancientMysteries practisedintheAntiquity,inIndiaandinEgypt.TheConstitutionsofthe Rite said: "... the masonic rite of Memphis is the continuation of the MysteriesoftheAntiquity.TheRitetaughtthefirstmentopayhomagetothe divinity...".TheRiteofMemphisreachedthe92and95degrees. TheAncientandPrimitiveRiteofMemphisandMisraimisinarguablythe mostHermeticMasonicOrderintheInternationalMasonicscene.Itisthe fusionoftheesotericprocessoftheEgyptianRiteorRiteofMisraimthat camefromVeniceat1801andtheEasternRiteorRiteofMemphisthatwas foundedat1839inParis.TheRiteofMisraimcamefromVeniceat1801due to the efforts of Filalete Abraham and immediately spread into Italy and France,ItalyandFrance.TheEasternRiteofMemphiswasfoundedat1839 inParis from EtienneMarconis and it was based on a nomenclature that workedthroughthedegreesofMisraimfromstart,includingtheInitiations andRitesoftheEasternRite. The information about these two Rites are a bit fractioned due to the historicalinflexionsthatbothRitesunderlay,mostlytheRiteofMisraimthat

inthecourseoftimecameacrosswiththepoliticalpowerandauthorityof other Masonic forces which having lost the true spirit of the Ancient Initiation,renderedeliteclubsthatcouldhardlyaccepttheoccurrenceofan orthodoxelite.TheseforcesalwaystriedtoabsorbtheorthodoxeliteRitesin anywaytheycould,obviously,sothattheycouldrestoretheirlostforages traditionalgenuineness.EspeciallyinItaly,thefightsthatwereconductedin the19thcenturyfromtheAustrianGovernmentintheLombardyVenice and other Governments of different states of the peninsula were very poisonous.Duringthe20thcentury,alotofmudslingingwasspilledfrom thefascisticestablishedorderofItaly. Nevertheless,themostimportantdocumentsweresavedandspreadtillour days.SuchdocumentsallowustoguaranteethattheRiteofMisraimwas activeatZakynthosIslandat1782andatVeniceat1796.InVenicetheRite wasputtosleepafterthecaptureofEneticDemocracyfromAustriaand awakenedfromFilaleteAbraham,whichwasthenameofByronTassonidi Modena,on1801. Upto1881,theRitesofMemphisandMizraimwentthesameparalleland harmoniouswayinthesameveryparticularclimate;indeedtheseRitesbegan togathertogetherintwoappurtenancestheMasonsoftheGrandOrientof France and those of the Ancient and Accepted Scottish Rite who were interested in studies bearing on Esotericism and Symbolic Masonry, Gnosticism,Kabala,evenOccultismandHermeticism.ThesetwoRiteswere theinheritorsandtheTrustees of old initiatic Obediences of the XVIIIth Century:thePhilalethes,Philadelphs,theHermeticRite,thePrimitiveRite, etc. And all this represented to Mizraim: 90 various degrees, and to Memphis,95. The problem was how to administer and utilise such an incongruous collection.WhenGaribaldiwasappointedfirstGrandMasterGeneralforlife, (AdVitam)fortheentireworld(becausetoaforeigner,thebrothersabroad hadnotknownpoliticalpersecutionsastheyhadinFrance)thedecisionwas tosetupakindofclassificationbynomeanshierarchicinorigin,butwhich rapidlybecameso.Indeedthe95degreesoftheRiteofMemphisMizraim

mustbeconsideredas apathway,whereinlie old Masonic degree's which were no longer practised and which were not a scale of valueseither.Giuseppe (Joseph) Garibaldi revitalised the Order, gatheredbothritesand expanded them to South America through italian and frenchinmigration. In 1856 the Rite was established in the USA, Romania, Australia and Switzerland by Jacques Etienne Marconis de Negre. After the Rite was chartered in the USA in1862,itwastheonly RitehighdegreeRiteintheUSAtoberecognizedbytheregularmasonic powersandtohaveacharteroforigin.DuringtheCivilWar,theRiteinthe USAlostsomanymembersthatitfellintoadeclinefromwhichitnever recovered. Theagreementsof1863withtheGrandOrientofFranceandin1896with

theGrandSymbolicScottishLodge,futureGrandLodgeofFrancedidnot concernthenormal33degrees(RiteofPerfectionfollowingtheAncientand Accepted Scottish Rite). The Superior Workshops of MemphisMizraim obligatorilypracticethe:4degree(SecretMaster),9thdegree(Electofthe Nine),13degree(RoyalArch),14degree(GrandElectoftheSacredVault andSublimeMason),18degree(KnightR+C),20Degree(Knightofthe Temple),28degree(KnightoftheSun).The30tdegree,(KnightKadosh) 31 degree (Grand Inspector), 32 degree (Sublime Prince of the Royal Secret), 33 degree (Sov.'. G.'. Inspector General. The 66 degree (Grand Consecrator) 87, 88, 89 and 90 degree called the (ARCANA ARCANORUM). TheSuperiordegreesthatisalldegreesabovethe33degreeareconferredas anhonourarytitleuponMasonsinrecompensefortheirvalourandfidelityto the Rite. The 20 Degree confers the Ancient Strict Observance Templar degrees,ofBaronVonHundt,andthesuccessionofJeanBaptisteVillermoz, theC.B.C.S.,ChevaliersBienfaisantsdeCitSainte. Manyprominentandleadingpersonalitiesoftheesotericcommunityatthe time,werealsoinvolvedwiththeRite.GerardAnacletEncausse(Papus,1865 1916),forinstance,wasGreatHierophantoftheM:.M:.from1913onuntilhe diedin1916.TheosophicSocietyofH.P.Blavatskyhadan'InnerOrder'for "practical work", called the 'Esoteric Section' (or Esoteric School). The Leadingmembers,whoresidedwithintheE.S.,werealsomembersofthe M:.M:.Rite.Itwasacomembership!Whenoneaspiredtobeamemberof theinnercircleoftheTheosophicalSociety,oneautomaticallyhadtobecome amemberoftheM:.M:.Rite..... Rudolf Steiner, for instance, became the Grand Master of the Rite in Germany while being a member of the TheosophicalSociety(HelefttheRitein1914). In1934oneoftheaimsoftheM:.M:.Conventionwas"TheReturntothe fundamentalsourceoftheMisraimRite".TheFrenchObedience,towhich theBelgianbranchbelongeduntil1933,workedthesystemofJohnYarker, calledofficiallyTheAntientandPrimitiveRiteofMasonry.Yarker'ssystem worked 33 degrees, divided into 3 sections, embracing MODERN,

CHIVALRIC,andEGYPTIANMasonry.Infactthesystemcompressedthe Ritualsofthe90workingdegreesoftheMemphisRiteinto30Rituals.One hastounderstandthattheoriginalsystemneededthefortuneofakingdomto carryonaRiteof90degreeswiththenecessarysplendour.Andthishas beenoneofthemainreasonsthatduringthe19thcenturyinseveralcities throughoutEuropetheoriginalRitewasabandoned.Abandonedbecauseof financialdifficulties... TheRitedid,however,continuetobepracticedinEuropeandwaschartered forthejurisdictionofChileinthe1920'swhereitisstillpracticedandwhere it survived until recent times. The Rite has experienced somewhat of a renaissancerecently,andisnowbeingpracticedonceagainintheregular jurisdictions of France, Brazil, Ecuador, and the Dominican Republic. Famous people who have been members of the Rite include Kenneth McKenzie,JohnYarker,GiuseppeGaribaldi,SalvatoreZola,DavidMcLellan andseveralmembersoftheRomanianroyalfamilypriortothesuppressionof FreemasonryasawholebytheCommunistsinthatcountry.
