SENIOR NEWS LINE by Matilda Charles Finding a Good Nursing Home Researchers at University of Pittsburgh's Graduate School of Public Health took a close look at the citations for 16,000 nursing homes from the years 2000 to 2007. They discovered that 15 percent of the facilities had been cited for a deficiency in infection control. This is important because nearly 400,000 people die each year from infections. More than 400 infection-related citations were in facilities that had low staffing of registered nurses, nurse aides and licensed practical nurses. From the study results, it appears that understaffing can be a big reason for the lack of infection control. Could it be as simple as nurses being too busy to wash their hands? It also was learned that those facilities cited for lack of infection control had a poor rating of care in general. If you have Medicare, there are places online you can look for ratings information as part of your search for a good nursing home. Medicareeligible facilities are rated on the www.Medicare.gov site. Called Nursing Home Compare, the website uses the five-star system to rate nursing homes in areas such as fire safety, health inspection, nursing staff levels and others. Do a search by ZIP code or city/state of the area you're interested in. To be eligible for Medicare, these facilities must have an annual inspection and be recertified. As always, know what Medicare will and won't pay for. Generally, nursing homes (skilled nursing facilities and nursing facilities) are for short stays. If you need long-term care, perhaps for assistance with daily living, investigate at-home services. On the Medicare.gov website you'll also find information such as the "Nursing Home Checklist" and "Guide to Choosing a Nursing Home." Getting one of these cards isnt hard: Business or commercial cards are being promoted not only to businesses and corporations, but to consumers, just as the regular consumer cards were. According to the Pew report, some 10 million offers for business credit cards are sent out every month. Here are some comparisons, with Protected indicating the coverage of personal credit cards under the Act. Protected: Terms cannot change during the first year, and 45 days notice must be given before terms change. Business: Terms can change at any time. Protected: Penalty interest rates cannot be applied to existing balances. Business: Penalty interest rates can be applied at any time, effective immediately, with no notice, to any balance. Protected: Penalty fees must be reasonable, and cannot exceed the violation itself. Business: Penalty fees are unrestricted. Protected: Payments over the minimum must be applied to the highest rate balance first. Business: Payment may be applied to lowest rate balances, which lets high-rate balances accrue interest. SLIDER SANDWICH BUNS I wanted to make some slider sandwiches for a family gettogether, but it was really hard to find the right size rolls for them. The recipe I was using was for a pretty hearty type of sandwich, so soft dinner rolls would not have worked. I bought a package of eight whole grain sub buns, brought them home, and cut them in half across the middle. Voila! I had 16 perfectly sized sandwich rolls, which was just enough for the meats and cheese. Next time these go on sale, I plan to stock up and put them in my freezer. Then I can make any size sandwich I want from big meatball subs to mini-burgers. Stefanie

In large self-sealing plastic bag, mix soy sauce, vinegar, sugar, thyme and pepper. Add steak to marinade, turning to coat. Seal bag, pressing out excess air. Place bag on plate; let stand 15 minutes at room temperature or 1 hour in refrigerator, turning over several times. 2. Meanwhile, for easier handling, insert 1 long metal skewer horizontally through onion slices; set aside. Prepare charcoal fire or preheat gas grill for covered direct grilling over medium heat. 3. Remove steak from marinade; pour marinade into 1-quart saucepan. Heat marinade over high heat to boiling; boil 2 minutes. 4. Place steak and onion slices on hot grill rack. Cover grill and cook steak and onion 12 to 15 minutes or until onions are browned and tender and meat is medium-rare, brushing both with marinade occasionally and turning both over once. Transfer steak to cutting board; separate onion into rings. 5. Thinly slice steak diagonally across the grain. Arrange onion rings and steak on 4 slices of bread; spoon any meat juices from board over onion and steak. Top with tomatoes, arugula and remaining 4 slices of bread. Serves 4. Prepare outdoor grill for direct grilling on medium. 2. Place peach halves on hot grill grate and cook 5 to 6 minutes or until lightly charred and tender, turning over once. 3. Meanwhile, prepare sauce: In bowl, with fork, mash half the raspberries with sugar. Stir in remaining raspberries. 4. THE PURSE SWAP I work in an office with about 15 other women, and I arranged for us to have a purse swap every three months or so at regularly scheduled staff meetings. We started by bringing purses that we didnt want and exchanged for another purse. Some folks bring in items and dont take anything back because they are de-cluttering. KIDS CHOICE When our children were younger, we constantly were looking for ways to reinforce good financial decisions and help them learn. We came up with a way to do both and combine it with something that we did each week. We usually went out to eat once or twice a week at a restaurant. As you know, restaurants are full of choices, and most kids let their parents do all the ordering. We gave our kids the power to choose on one particular item, their beverage. It sounds simple, but it was effective. We explained that they could choose a soda or something else. If they chose water, we paid them a dollar. That dollar was what it would have cost us to purchase a soda or other beverage, so we were essentially redirecting that spending to the kids versus the restaurant. After awhile and still to this day, our kids tend to order water, and for years, they have been able to bank that one dollar based on a decision that they made and owned. This may not be for everyone, but it sure worked for us. D.

She said yes, that the unit had been repaired last summer, but just never seemed to cool things down very well. I asked if I could take a look at it. `The outdoor unit looked to be working just fine, except that it had been running nonstop throughout my visit. When I went back inside the house I found a potential problem. When I looked up at the air intake filter, which was set in the hallway ceiling, I saw a thick coat of dust. I immediately grabbed a stepladder and opened the filter panel, and was rewarded with a shower of dust. The air filter was encrusted with thick dust. It had not been changed in at least a year, maybe longer! `I shut off the air conditioner at the thermostat, removed the old filter, dusted and cleaned the intake area and filter panel as best I could, and put in a new filter. Then I turned the air conditioning back on. `The result? My relative called me a few hours later and asked me to stop by and turn the temperature up a few degrees, as she was too cold. I got the number of the repair service that fixed her outside unit so I could blister their ears about not also checking and changing the air filters as part of the service, and to schedule a checkup of her airconditioning system. I sent this to you in hopes that readers will remember to change the filters on their air conditioning units regularly -- it can make a huge difference in a home's temperature.

S.W.A.M.P. TEEN CENTER Earlier this month Port Allegany took on a new face on Main St. A teen center known as the S.W.A.M.P. held its grand opening on June 2. This center began as a government project which three Port Allegany High School girls took part in this project. These girls saw a need for a teen center with adult supervision, structured activities and a place to provide educational services for those that have completed 7th through 12th grades. The name S.W.A.M.P. stands for Success with Achievement Motivation Preparedness. We were given the opportunity to partner with McKean County Housing Authority in Smethport as they offered the building at 6 N. Main Street for us to use. The building was in dire need of repairs which housing took care of all the repairs. What a transformation! We are now open Monday through Thursday from 1-5pm for the summer. At least one adult will always be at the center during open hours. We have Guitar Hero games, computers, and DVD movies for activities at the center. We have events planned for the summer to be announced. The S.W.A.M.P. believes that we will be able to finance our activities through fundraisers; however in order to keep the door open at the center we need approximately $500 per month to pay for rent and utilities. In addition to these expenses we must carry liability insurance of $200 annually in addition to the rental insurance we need to purchase to cover any losses of our equipment. This expense is greater than we can cover through fundraisers. This is where we are asking for your help. Who do you fight? I went out on the porch off of our den, just to get some air for a few minutes; you know, taking a break. As I stepped out on the porch, I almost stepped on this beautiful, redheaded woodpecker that was dead. I was stunned that such a gorgeous bird was dead on my porch. He was too big for our cat to attack, but I looked him over carefully anyway, and there was no blood, no obvious signs of attack. So I turned around to see what he would have seen on the porch and there it was - my own reflection in the glass door. It was mating season at the time and evidently he saw his reflection in the glass door, thought it was another male to be fought off from his territory, and just kept attacking it until he died. That explained why there was no sign of attack. He just kept banging his head on the door until he died. How often do you fight yourself? Injuring yourself when you think youre hurting someone else? I guess we all do it, but you dont have to. Focus and filter your thoughts on the positive in your world and watch as it reflects back to you. A public service message brought to you by

It fell off the wall and got some scuff marks on its face. I considered going to a hardware store to buy bottles of plastic cleaner and scratch remover. The cost would have been half the cost of the clock. My sister recommended using toothpaste instead. So I used an old cloth and a generous amount of toothpaste. It worked! Apparently, toothpaste has enough abrasives to remove scratches in soft plastic. It may not work on all plastics, but it kept my clock looking brand new. Jose ***
