Tips for safe swimming and healthy pools
STATEPOINT MEDIA
Its pool season again a time for
pool parties and splashing with the kids.
Its also time to share tips on keeping
swimming healthy and avoiding recre-
ational water illnesses.
New research from the Centers for
Disease Control and Prevention (CDC)
on swimmers ear underscores the need
for the public to play an active role in en-
suring healthy pools. The study indicates
swimmers ear accounts for 2.4 million
doctor visits and nearly $500 million in
health care costs annually. The CDC is
encouraging swimmers to test pool wa-
ter for proper chemistry.
To help keep swimming fun and
healthy this summer, the Water Quality
& Health Council is once again making
free pool test kits available so swimmers
can check pH and chlorine readings. Ac-
cording to the CDC, pools with proper
pH and chlorine readings are less likely
to harbor bacteria that cause swimmers
ear and germs that cause other recre-
ational water illnesses, including diar-
rhea and athletes foot. Free pool test
kits are available at www.healthypools.
org/freeteststrips.
Last summer, the council provided
more than 43,000 free pool test kits.
Data submitted by swimmers who re-
quested kits found that 40 percent of
pools had unacceptable levels of chlorine
or pH readings.
Were calling on swimmers to take
active roles in keeping pools healthy. We
want them to dip before they dive. Be-
fore getting in a pool, swimmers should
dip a color-coded test strip into the water
to check its chemistry, says Chris Wi-
ant, chair of the Water Quality & Health
Council. When Americans head to the
pool this summer, they should make
packing a pool test strip as routine as
packing towels and sunscreen.
When testing pool water, the pH
should register between 7.2 and 7.8 and
the free chlorine level should be between
1.0 and 4.0 parts per million. If read-
ings are outside these ranges, pool staff
should be notifed immediately. Pool op-
erators should check disinfectant levels
and pH at least twice daily.
Swimmers requesting test kits are
encouraged to upload readings to the
Healthy Pools website, which even offers
a smart-phone application so swimmers
can upload data poolside.
Just because you practice clean swim-
ming, doesnt mean others are as con-
siderate. In a recent survey by the Water
Quality & Health Council, nearly one in
fve adults admitted to urinating in pools
and one in three said they dont shower
before swimming.
In addition to using pool test kits,
swimmers can use their senses to check
for signs of healthy pools. Swimmers
should be able to:
n See through water to the foor of
the pool
n Hear pool cleaning equipment
n Smell no harsh chemical odor
n Feel no sliminess on pool tiles

al water illnesses, visit www.cdc.gov/

Poison Ivy Contact Dermatitis
I am on vacation and this is a reprint from last year. Last week I saw ve cases of Poison Ivy, all of them different
in different stages. They vary from mild itching to huge blisters that weep and drain.
Generally, the rash is blisters on a red base that are generally in lines. This is where the leaf rubbed across
the skin leaving a trail of oil which then reacts with the skin in a sensitive person. The allergen in poison ivy is a
substance called urushiol. In order to treat a reaction to the poison ivy you need to neutralize the urushiol.
There are several herbs, when applied topically, which can do this. Jewelweed is one of the best. You can buy
Jewelweed soap. You can also combine this with any herb that contains a signicant amount of saponins such
as Soapwort, Horse Chestnut, Licorice, or Rose Leaves. Please remember that these are for topical use only as
saponins shouldnt be taken internally while pregnant or nursing, but are perfectly safe when used externally.
One thing to help control the itching is aloe Vera. Cool baths with powdered colloidal oatmeal (aveeno) or
Epsom salts can be extremely soothing.
There are several good homeopathic remedies that effectively treat contact dermatitis from poison ivy.
Remember in all cases, the earlier the treatment the better. Homeopathic Rhus Tox. is made from poison oak
leaves and will counteract the reaction to poison ivy. Homeopathic Croton Tig. is very good for the itching.
Homeopathic Cantharis is good for any blisters, burns, or burning sensations.
The best treatment is prevention. Avoid these plants. Go on line or to the library to nd pictures. Teach
yourself and your children what these plants look like.
Wear long sleeves and gloves. Wash these clothes with hot water and detergent after
you are done working outside. The oil can get on tools, re wood, shoes, pets, and any
inanimate object. Spraying objects with a soapy water solution will break up the oil and
neutralize it. Some people who have to work around these plants all the time will apply
soap, like dish liquid to their skin before going to work and rinse it off after work. This seems
to break up the oil on contact with the skin. But, I am not sure how safe it is to have those
chemicals on the skin all the time. Occasional use, I am sure, is ne.
So, learn the plant, prevent exposure, treat naturally as soon as possible, and see your
doctor if the natural measures fail.

ith a little more than three
weeks of classes left, stu-
dents at the Math/Science/
Technology Center are filling the remain-
ing days of the school year with as many
extra learning activities as possible.
It is these types of activities that
educators say make the Math/Science/
Technology Center worth the
investment.
However, due to decreased interest
fromlocal districts, the Mecosta-Osceola
Intermediate School District waits to see
if the center will sustain itself.

BIGRAPIDS Watching a big,
red fire truck whizz by with lights
flashing and sirens blaring was
something that fascinated Jerrad
Councilor as a child.
Now hes doing more than
watching the trucks rush to the
scenehesclimbingaboardtohelp
fight fires as a part-paid firefighter
for the Big Rapids Department of
Public Safety.
Ive always thought it would be
exciting, Councilor said. I always
liked the lights and sirens as a kid
and thought it would be fun to do.
... Now Im getting my pager, and
Ive been on a few runs for carbon
monoxide, but havent been to any
big fires yet.
Councilor recently completed
his Fire 1 and Fire 2 certification
classes, which teach potential fire-
fighters how to extinguish a blaz-
ing building while trying to limit
the amount of property damage.
Getting certified allows him to
respond to fire calls with the rest of
the crew.
The Big Rapids Department
of Public Safety fire crew is look-
ing for more people like Councilor
to fill a few open spots for part-
paid firefighters, who work on an
on-call basis, like volunteer fire-
fighters, but are paid for their time
and given on-the-job health care
coverage in the event that theyre
injured on scene.
