The Bradford MBA

Why successful people choose the Bradford MBA

World-class ranking and global accreditation
Your Bradford MBA will be highly regarded everywhere you work. The Financial Times (FT) placed us 14th in the UK and 37th amongst European business schools in its December 2009 ranking of top European business schools. The full-time MBA is consistently ranked in the top 25 in Europe and top 100 globally by the FT. The Executive Part-time MBA has appeared in all eight of the Financial Times worldwide league tables and is currently ranked number-one in the North of England and among the worlds top 70 programmes. All of our MBA programmes have accreditation from AMBA (the Association of MBAs) and we are one of only just over 100 business schools around the world to have gained the coveted EQUIS accreditation. The UK Quality Assurance Agency for Higher Education has also approved both the standard of student achievement and the quality of learning opportunities provided at Bradford.

Exceptional value for money

Bradford is a relatively inexpensive city in which to be a student and the School ranks 11th in the world in the Financial Times tables for value for money. Students on our MBA full-time programme on average have benefitted from an 85% increase in salary three years after graduating, whilst those on the Executive Part-time programme have enjoyed a 61% increase in salary compared to what they earned prior to starting the MBA.

Research excellence
High-quality research underpins any world-class business school. The Higher Education Funding Council rates our research as internationally excellent in some areas and nationally excellent in others. We have full Economic and Social Research Council accreditation for our research training.

// I would advise anyone who is thinking about doing an MBA to go for it. There is everything to gain from an MBA programme and at Bradford I certainly had all the support I needed. //
Omoye Okoh Full-time MBA

The Bradford MBA Management Project

// I decided that studying for an MBA would allow me to broaden my skill set, try out new ideas within my current organization and better equip myself for more senior management roles both within an IT context and beyond.//
Jon Shaw MBA Alumni Our students often find the Management Project to be the most rewarding and challenging part of our programme. It enables you to put the knowledge and skills you have gained throughout the programme to practical use on a relevant management issue. The project involves conducting an original and detailed investigation of a specific business management problem, written in a 15,000-word dissertation. If you are sponsored by your employer you would usually undertake a management project that relates to your workplace. Otherwise, you may choose to use the project to deepen your knowledge of a different sector or organization, or as a stepping-stone to your next job. We provide plenty of support and guidance to help you to make the right choice of topic - and, of course, during the project itself. We also provide opportunities for students on the full- time programme to undertake company-based projects on a competitive basis.

Examples of recent projects are:

To establish the market options and parameters for a sustainable resource-management system (food waste) A review of trends in structural change in the printing supply chain caused by e-commerce and new printing technology Review of strategic growth alternatives Develop a risk-management strategy and reporting framework Making the best use of customer relationship management The impact of procurement evolution on todays sales professional The barriers to selling management consultancy in the new economic climate Business impact analysis (Emergency Planning) Key account management in the new healthcare environment

The Bradford Personal Development Portfolio (PDP)

Many business schools regard the skills development of students as an option. In contrast, we integrate it into the programme itself through our Personal Development Portfolio (PDP). Detailing the progress you have achieved, the Bradford PDP helps you to plan, manage and demonstrate your learning more effectively.

The strong emphasis we place on it helps you to:

study more effectively manage more confidently and productively take responsibility for your own continuing professional development The feedback we regularly receive from students and their employers substantiates these claims.

How does it work?

You choose three skills that are important to you from the areas of careers, study, personal and interpersonal skills, and plan how to address their development. Workshops and an individual tutor support this process. You then gather evidence of your learning from activities and feedback during both formal and informal aspects of your programme.

Examples of recent workshops include:

creative problem-solving negotiation skills emotional intelligence presentation skills media awareness managing time and stress Our Effective Learning, Careers and Language services also offer workshops and resources. All these elements help you to become more aware of your own and others development needs, and apply your newly acquired skills more effectively. Students in employment may also collect evidence through workplace or other learning activities. Your Bradford PDP is an indispensable tool for making the most of your learning opportunities to develop your management capabilities.

The Bradford PDP is a programme of skill development activities and resources which gives students:
Greater career focus and job progression Improved grades Better and changed attitude to work Enhanced self-awareness and confidence More visible impact at work These attributes help you develop the kind of independent and reflective style of learning that will help you during your Bradford MBA studies and thereafter, throughout your working life. The Bradford PDP is introduced in the first week of your studies and completed by the end of the taught programme in the form of a 10-credit module.

// I believe the Bradford MBA gives students the tools they need to succeed in todays fast-paced world. //

Research informing management education

At Bradford, we value research and ensure that our teaching is based on the best possible understanding of the systems and organizations our students will manage.
Research is at the centre of our approach to teaching and learning. In the latest research assessment exercise (RAE 2008), almost half (45%) of the School of Managements research activity was assessed as being world leading or internationally excellent in terms of originality, significance and rigour, with 90% of our research assessed to be of international standing. The RAE also reports 34 new members of staff on the faculty since the last (2001) return, reflecting our continued ability to recruit high-calibre staff in an increasingly competitive market. We promote research that passes the double hurdle of demonstrating academically excellent work that is also valuable to policymakers and practising business people. Regular research seminars by staff, research students and visitors help to foster a vibrant research culture. Our range of activities, the depth of our research, and our close involvement with industry, commerce and the public sector provide an excellent and highly supportive research environment. Some of our leading academic staff regularly contribute to BBC radio and TV programmes. Most of the research we do is in collaboration with individual organizations, and companies fund a substantial number of projects.

Marcus Orton Accelerated MBA 2010
Marcus was keen to achieve a well-respected, highly rated MBA, and our FT listings and overall reputation was important. In practical terms it was the fast-track structure of the Accelerated MBA that made all the difference. The January start date and limited course duration was a timely short break from my professional work. The programme helped to strengthen my appreciation and capabilities in business management and administration as I progressed from R&D, through Project Management into company management and business leadership. The programme topics complemented my skills, experience and development needs. Access to the themes and issues within Sustainable Operations in particular will have a long-term impact on my approach to personal and business management. The significant work-load certainly tested and improved my ability to manage my time and priorities, achieve on time and in full delivery against immovable submission and exam dates. The Effective Learning support from day one has been invaluable, it is a real asset to the School and a powerful aspect of the educational experience. I enjoyed fantastic conversations with and support from colleagues and academic staff as we grappled with relating theory to business practice. Sharing these few months with so many colleagues from further afield, helped me gain a deeper appreciation and respect for their cultural heritage, insight and values. Marcus now intends to return to medical devices business management, and is also exploring opportunities in the management of healthcare provision.

Steve Tynegate Executive Part-time MBA
For Steve Tynegate (52) getting value for money was a key reason why he opted to study for his MBA at Bradford. He chose to study part-time. I had always resisted the idea of an MBA because I was a manufacturing guy and thought they were only for commercial people. When I started the degree I was worried about my age, but these fears were totally unfounded. My experience meant I was able to make real contributions in all lectures. Bradford was my choice because if I was going to invest nearly two years I wanted a qualification of value. My company, Bayer CropScience, was paying so I also wanted them to get value for money. I needed to do a part-time course because I still had a day job. Bradford gave me a quality MBA which elevated my self-belief. I used what I learnt about operations to lead my site team to win a national manufacturing award, and to put together a proposal for a management buy-out of a redundant site.

Elective modules offered to those studying full-time may be taken as an alternative, however, these modules may require attendance during the day and occasionally at weekends. You can opt to complete a number of these by distance learning. Some electives are also offered

Canadian Benjamin Ward (29) was attracted to study at Bradford University School of Management because of its partnerships with other world-class institutions and the success of its MBA students. It prepares students for the ever-changing world of business by creating thoughtful responses to difficult situations. Its not just a regurgitation of information; its a framework for knowledge creation. Bradford truly helps to create individuals who can put knowledge to work. I now work as the Executive Director of a non-profit organization in Toronto with responsibility for over 45 staff and 250 volunteers. What You Study

In order to provide a solid foundation students initially study ten compulsory modules covering key business and managerial disciplines. Following on from this you will be given an opportunity to tailor your studies to suit your own personal needs. This is achieved through the provision of 9 elective modules from which distance learning students are required to study 4 modules. At the end of the taught programme you will be required to put into practice what you have learned and complete a 12,500 15,000-word management project. This enables you to focus on a subject area of specific interest to you.

As a distance learning student you will make extensive use of our online virtual learning environment. For each module you will be assigned to a small faculty-led tutor group and engage in weekly online discussions and a number of live online tutorial sessions. You will also have the opportunity to monitor your progress through the extensive online multiple choice question banks that accompany each module and one-to-one interaction with your tutor. In addition you are given the opportunity to learn from fellow students via our distance learner online social space called The Atrium. We supplement extensive online support for each module with a textbook and a highquality study book containing essential study notes, case studies and short exercises all designed to further develop your understanding.

How You Study

The Bradford distance learning MBA is flexible allowing you to vary the speed of your progression to suit your needs. Generally, students take two modules per quarter, this equates to 14-16 hours of work per week. If work or family life is particularly busy you can lighten your workload by taking just one module or even suspend your studies, restarting at a later date. This flexibility allows you to complete a distance learning MBA in two to six years.

About Bradford University School of Management

Built in 1877 as a training centre for Congregationalist ministers, our principal Emm Lane building houses superb teaching space, offices, common rooms, meeting and reception rooms. Next door, the former mansion of Heaton Mount, built in 1866, is our Centre for Executive Education. Bradford University School of Management was first established in 1963 and is one of Britains longest established full service business schools with experience of providing cutting edge yet practical management education. A recently completed, bright, spacious and ergonomic new building extension now links Emm Lanes impressive historic features with the rest of the campus, creating an architecturally stunning space for students and managers to learn together and share their knowledge and skills. A key part of these brand new facilities is our high-quality MBA teaching suite. Based on the Harvard style, our new lecture theatre seats 92 in comfort while nine dedicated tutorial rooms offer more compact spaces for smaller groups, all equipped with the latest audio-visual equipment.

A beautiful setting
Only 4km from Bradford city centre, we boast our own delightful self-contained parkland campus. In this learning village, academic staff, undergraduates, MSc, MBA, and doctoral students from all over the world, work and learn alongside practising managers on executive programmes from many of the worlds leading companies. Ours is a truly international community.

Internationalism
Our international faculty and students bring diverse perspectives on current business and management issues and help to create a stimulating atmosphere for teaching, learning and research. Additionally, we run an extensive range of programmes around the world. On our overseas programmes there are, at any one time, about 2,000 students registered for various awards. We have activities in the Netherlands and Germany with our sister business school Tias NIMBAS, links with universities in France, Spain, Poland, Oman, India, Hong Kong and Singapore as well as Dubai, where we now have our own International Office. We offer our educational programmes globally through our highly regarded distance-learning programmes.

Modern resources
The Atrium is the perfect place for meeting, eating, socialising and working and has created a focal point for the whole campus. There is a caf, plenty of break-out space and lots of readily accessible computer terminals. The result is a welcoming sense of community and purpose. Our centralised Learning Resource Centre and Library integrates the existing Business and Management library with the Law library. It is conveniently located within the Emm Lane building, and now opens directly out into the Atrium.

Links with business

A particular strength of both our taught and research programmes arises from the close links we maintain with industry, commerce, central government and local authorities. Our visiting lecturers include directors and senior managers from well-known organizations. They provide first-hand experience of management decision-making at a strategic level. Our frequent discussions with leading employers, locally and nationally, help to ensure that all our programmes provide the skills that employers value. We offer a wide range of other services to business, including student placements, research, business mentoring, Executive Education, Knowledge Transfer Partnerships, SME Knowledge Network and Innovation Network.

The Ecoversity concept

The new site incorporates the University of Bradfords Ecoversity principles of sustainable development. For example, the new building makes maximum use of daylight, water is heated using solar panels, while room heating uses a biomass boiler to minimise carbon emissions. There is improved access for the disabled, charging facilities for electric cars, live information on public transport, extra space for storing bicycles and showers for cyclists.

Sustainability
Sustainability has been central to our recent development. Constructed from reinforced concrete with high-specification insulation and triple-glazed windows, the new structure is designed to maximise the thermal mass of the building. A biomass boiler, fuelled by woodchip from a managed forest in North Yorkshire, heats the building, resulting in a significantly lower carbon footprint. All of this has been delivered without compromising the existing woodland and garden surroundings and has already received praise for the sympathetic architectural design and a highlevel commitment to sustainability.

Bradford is a exciting place to live and study the city is an important part of the Bradford MBAs success story. One of the twelve largest cities in Britain, with a population of more than 450,000, Bradford has the facilities of a thriving modern metropolis, yet is small enough to be friendly and easy to find your way around. Centrally placed in the UK, Bradford is set among some of the most spectacular scenery in England. It also offers the best value for money in terms of living costs so your money will go further. The Guardian newspaper rated Bradford the least expensive student city in the UK. The music, art, culture and cuisine of a multitude of nations create a vibrant and dynamic social scene in Bradford. It is truly international city boasting a lively cosmopolitan atmosphere, with its slogan of One landscape, many views. The financial and commercial services dominate the Bradford economy. There is also an expanding electronics sector, which some have predicted could become as important to the local economy as textiles and engineering were in the past. These and other industries provide a network of useful contacts, relationships and case studies for the School of Management.

Enjoy Yorkshire
Bradfords rich history is reflected in its architecture: the city has 5,800 buildings of architectural significance, more per square kilometre than any other regional city in Britain. The Victorian model village of Saltaire, close to the School of Management, recently joined the Egyptian Pyramids and the Great Wall of China in achieving World Heritage Site status. Bradford has many parks and gardens. Lister Park, near the Bradford University School of Management campus, has the first Mughal water garden to be built in the north of England. Designed to reflect the cultural diversity of the city, it is a synthesis between Islamic and Indian architectural styles, and incorporates plants and trees with a Mughal or Indian connection. Bradford offers you a wide range of museums, cinemas, theatres to visit as well as festivals, including the spectacular Mela - an Asian musicand-dance festival. You can eat well here, too. Bradford offers a wide range of cuisines and enjoys the well-deserved reputation of being the curry capital of Britain with more than 200 Asian restaurants to choose from. Whatever your culinary tastes, you will find them well catered for in Bradford. One of the UKs largest counties, our county has more outstanding countryside than any other English region, with a third of Englands national parks as well as protected coastline and important habitats. Its home to the famous Ilkley Moor and the breathtaking Bront Country which provided inspiration for the Victorian author sisters Charlotte, Emily and Anne. The Yorkshire Dales, a major attraction for country lovers, provide excellent opportunities for walking, cycling, horse riding, rock climbing, caving and orienteering.

To be accepted on the Bradford MBA programme, you will typically have: a good first degree from an approved university or an acceptable professional qualification, and at least three years significant post-study employment experience We encourage you to contact us in advance of an application to discuss your eligibility for entry. We recognise that there are experienced and able managers who may not immediately fulfil our normal entry requirements, in which case you are encouraged to apply and be considered on the merits of your career profile and achievements. Once you have applied, we will use a number of methods to evaluate your suitability for admission. Firstly, the documents you provide will allow us to form a preliminary judgement about your suitability. Suitable applicants will be interviewed and will be asked to complete either The Bradford Test or GMAT. The Bradford Test is a two-part diagnostic ability test of approximately 20 minutes each, assessing verbal and numerical reasoning. Your results are compared to an average attained by individuals from a similar professional management background and feedback is provided to all candidates.

If you live in the UK and have the basic entry requirements, we will ask you to visit the School of Management to meet staff and current Bradford MBA students and tour the campus. If you live abroad and have difficulty getting to Bradford, we will make a decision about your entry based on your application form, references, test results and interview, which will normally be conducted by telephone. All applicants who are not native speakers of English are required to provide proof of proficiency in English for academic purposes. A score of 6.5 in the IELTS test of English, 580 in the written TOEFL, 240 in the computer-based TOEFL or 94 or better in the internet-based TOEFL is the minimum requirement. If you have narrowly failed to meet these standards in English, you can take a six-week summer course to make up the difference. (See English language learning on page 19).
